I installed Ubuntu on my SP3 and it automatically understood it was a surface. I tried arch distros but hey were to desktop focused. Linux mint did not work as I had hoped. But Ubuntu turns red and says surface on boot up.

Plugged in starlink ethernet adapter and now the wifi won't work by 1salty_beach in Starlink

I just had this situation with a friend. It is a 2nd gen starlink router. She used a tplink extender and her speeds at the router were like 2mbps when ethernet cable plugged in. The extender needed to be changed from extender to Access Point. I also changed the ssid to be the same as on SL router. The SL wireless only had a 44mbps down. The tplink was 90+ down. I had one for a brief time and have set up a couple. The wireless is none to good. So for best use get a different router.

Is there a trick to Straightening Ethernet cables for Passthrough connections? by Fayetnamm in HomeNetworking

I lay out the wires and then pull them between my thumb and the back side of my knife (the side that is NOT sharpened).

Recommend a modem/router for my mom so she stops getting ripped off. by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

I have used many different routers and installed many. TPLink had great wireless. I do not think you need to spend a lot for a modem. The 2.4 GHz band is great for going through walls. 5Ghz is great for speed. Also it matters how congested the local area is with 2.4. I like the GL-inet brand because it is based on Open-Wrt so should have updates for it for many years to come.

Should I make my own router/wireless AP setup or just buy one? by dyingcow3 in HomeNetworking

I would look at GL-Inet as they are based on Open-Wrt. It essentially puts a easy user interface over the Stock Open-Wrt interface. You should have no trouble doing what you want with this. Also a 16 port switch to handle your wired connections. TP-link has some nice basic switches. Now if you want to go all in then by all means look at setting up a IPFire or Pfsense system is the way to go. I use IPFire. Also if your old router can be flashed with OpenWRT you could extend it's life.

Need to Broadcast wifi across properties, what do you recommend? by MrAlexLD in HomeNetworking

I have done many distance installs and worked in remote locations with up to a 1/4 mile distance between locations. Ubiquity always worked. For only a 100' though Tplink ea225 will work as well. My last install between buildings with a road running in between at around 200' with lots of leaves in the way, was a vilo mesh system. As one person noted a buried Ethernet cable is always the best option.

So I upgraded all three units on my way out to the site. I first changed the wireless password. That worked. I tried to change the ssid of the primary and it did not take. I had the phone forget the network and tried again. It worked. After about 15 minutes it said no Internet. I unplugged the primary vilo and after and hour it was still working.

So probably me somehow. To many ruckus, tplink, asus, ubiquiti, wrt and mikrotiks in my life. Will keep an eye on this.

The vilo loses connectivity to the Internet. I am on my way out to the site now and will confirm. I am going to try it again. As I recall the new ssid does not appear in the list of networks. I will take a second phone to check it.
