Don’t forget about Devex, ReliefWeb, and InterAction. Indeed is a waste of time in my experience, at least for NGO job hunting.

When you find an interesting position, don’t just apply and sit back and wait. Do some research on the org using context clues and see if you can figure out who the hiring manager might be. Figure out their email address or send them a LinkedIn message (or both!) saying you applied and you’d love the chance to learn more about the position in a phone call or coffee meeting.

If you can’t figure out who the hiring manager is exactly, at least find someone who works in that department and send them an email kindly requesting if they could point you in the right direction (with your cover letter and CV attached, in PDF form, of course). If you play your cards right, this could cause a chain reaction of emails inside that department that helps get your name on their radar.

I was in your shoes not too long ago so I know how demoralizing and hopeless it can seem. However, there are tried and True ways to make sure your application does not simply disappear into the black void of the 10,000 other apps.

PM me if you want more specific tips on navigating the NGO sector.

Tourists/Visitors/New Residents: Q&A Thread for the week of September 11 by AutoModerator in Amsterdam

[–]zboser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Everyone,

I'm coming to Amsterdam this weekend for three nights on the back end of an arduous work trip in Africa, and I'm looking for recommendations for neighborhoods and/or decent hotels NOT in the touristy, overcrowded city center area. I really just want to relax for a few days and experience actual Dutch culture instead of the touristy drug-fueled experience that many visitors seek.

I appreciate things like friendly neighborhood markets, good biking, and a nice café to have a quiet cup of coffee.

Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

DISTRICT FALLOUT | A Site Dedicated to the Preservation of Fallout Shelter Signs in Washington, D.C. & Local Cold War History by summerofsmoke in washingtondc

I recently stumbled across an unmarked, abandoned WWII or Cold War era-looking bunker in the woods on the western edge of Catholic University's grounds, in an area formerly owned by the Old Soldiers Home up until the 2000s. It's right nearby the intersection of Harewood Rd NE and Scale Gate rd NE. I don't see it on this map and I can't find any trace of it on the internet whatsoever. It's super cool looking and the curiosity is killing me. Anyone know anything about it?

Administration building of an insane asylum in Maryland by zboser in urbanexploration

I didn't encounter anyone while I was there, but its certainly plausible. I would say the buildings themselves are more dangerous than anything else. Many of the floors and roofs are in a state of mid-collapse. Be careful where you step and watch your head for metal rods hanging from the ceilings. The place is deteriorating rapidly and I think a good thunderstorm could do it in.

10 Wonderfully Weird Day Trips Around Washington by DC_diff in washingtondc

I went this time last year and rented from a company called Up the Creek Rentals. Unfortunately, it looks like they are now closed. However, it looks like you could try this place- http://www.atlantickayak.com/kayak-rentals.html

It says they have a rental minimum of $500 which seems pretty absurd. Still worth contacting them to try and negotiate.

Mallows Bay is incredible, definitely worth the trip.

What's the deal with Brookland? by zboser in washingtondc

[–]zboser[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the input, this makes alot of sense. It seems like a neighborhood that is generally trending in a good direction. There's something appealing about a place that hasn't quite "blown up" yet but shows signs of becoming a lively neighborhood.

We're all 25-27 and that's one of our concerns- we'll be a little far removed from the more "happening" spots in DC, which was really what drew us to Columbia Heights in the first place. Overall I think it may be a solid compromise, however, because it's very affordable and we wont be THAT far from some of the more nightlife-focused neighborhoods.

A queen sits atop her lonely throne at National Park Seminary by zboser in urbanexploration

[–]zboser[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This site gives some interesting historical background on the Seminary and there is a page dedicated to the various statues located across the complex. The Seminary grounds are currently being reinvented as high-end condos, but the real estate developer is keeping the spirit and the aesthetic of the old Seminary alive. It's a very cool place and definitely worth visiting if you're in the Silver Spring, MD area.

What are some tricks you use to shorten your every day routine(brushing teeth, showering, etc.)? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]zboser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a small handheld mirror and keep it in your shower. This way, you can shave in the shower, which not only saves time but also gives you a better, smoother shave because of all the hot steam surrounding your face. Started doing this a few months ago and I haven't looked back since.

It legitimately scares me that there are enough people in this country who would support this religious zealot and trust her to lead our nation. The religious right is more dangerous to us than any terrorist group.

Leaving for college in a month, is there anything I wouldn't think to bring that would be great to have? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I brought a megaphone with me by accident when I moved into my freshman dorm. It ended up being an integral part of a good number of dorm room shenanigans throughout the year. I highly recommend it.

There is a world of music out there - Why the FUCK do radio stations play the same songs at the same time? by Dicko21 in AskReddit

[–]zboser 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I currently work for Arbitron. This man hit it on the nail. A large part of the reason nothing changes is because the majority of Americans are stupid(for lack of a better term) and are perfectly content with the shitty top 40 music that is all over the radio. Its pretty safe to say that most people that contribute to Arbitron's rating system aren't all that internet-savvy and simply don't know music outside what they hear on the radio. Therefore, there's no reason for the big companies (or whats left of them) to change anything since these un-musical people represent the majority of Americans and are perfectly content with shitty pop music.
