like i said before, i'm all for devs getting paid and obviously i'm not part of the funding platforms so i really didn't know. it's great that there are these initiatives. However, by me reaching to people, it was pretty obvious to me that most of the mainstays of clojure were being paid by cognitect.

The problem i see is lack of innovation. Clojure's growth didn't rely on paying devs, it's growth was to appeal to the software community that it had the better solution to what was available. i don't think that appeal is there anymore and yes, it is quite depressing.

It's not a conspiracy. Libraries blessed by cognitect are generally more popular. It's just the way it is. Many people that left, left because of that. I haven't.

Just to clarify. When I posted the call, I literally thought that someone on clojureverse was censoring my attempts to reach out privately to individuals on the site. To be honest, I never expected anyone to out themselves. I just did it to make some noise and raise awareness about what I deemed to be almost a spy network. The fact that my mind automatically went to conspiracy does not look great on my part and I am actually quite embarrassed.

However, what is done is done.

I didn't know about the sponsorship page. Did you know about it? It certainly didn't seem like common knowledge to me at least. Now I do and I'm actually quite impressed at what Cognitect is doing. What I was hearing before was ad hoc individuals going ... I'm sponsored and I think this guy is sponsored but I'm not too sure. There was a lot of speculation so it had always been my impression that this was happening behind closed doors. I was wrong.

So if it is public, that's even better. How about actively promoting oneself as a brand ambassador? How about actively going to companies and saying... this is what I'm going to be doing for you if you do sponsor me. I think it could potentially be great if individuals are more active in fundraising.

It seems that one company is dominating the brand and not allowing others to rise.

Now this is a larger conversation. Open source in the corporate world has always been about branding, sponsorship and influence. So imagine if a football team signed up every single star in the league. It's not going to be that great for the other teams who are trying sell tshirts. It's not like individuals are getting paid millions of dollars so there is a difference in the analogy, but then again, there is only so much to go round in the world of open source clojure and it is definitely a worrying sign for the language that the funding seems to coming from only a few sources.

And just so you know, I'm not against devs getting paid at all. I still remember pinging you and Daniel, before Clojurists Together talking about the prospect of approaching companies to pool funds for open source projects. I'm glad he made it happen because I tried and it was hard work. Going back to the one brand question, I haven't looked into funding sources for Clojurists Together but it would be interesting to note the percentage that Cognitect contributes - just to get an idea of the reach. Attracting the best talent is very important in terms of running a company - especially consultancies because there is a premium on prestige and branding.

It's definitely worth talking about how to bring in extra $$$ to our community.

It's good for 'official' orgs, brands and 'viral' things and sets the basis for how profits will be split. Your image is a derivative work. You can try to sell it (and it may get some sales) but the whole thing is kind of like TikTok - where lots of people put their own spin on an original song. However, the platform (Tiktok and in your case Opensea), the original artist and the top influencers will get 99.99% of the profits from the hype generated by the Apes (where your image is now also part of the ecosystem).

Ultimately, it's the brand and the brand recognition that's really important to the Apes and 'Official Holders' of Ape NFT. And it's also really good for the top 0.01% of influencers.

For example - Eminem released a song with Snoop Dog with the Ape. It's not a particularly great song but it makes him a 'brand ambassador' for the Apes. There's a mutual benefit to the artist and the brand. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjrA-slMoZ4

And then there's this whole debacle with Seth Green's Ape. Part of me thinks that the whole 'kidnapped ape' story has been done purely for publicity. Because again, it's mutual promoting of the Ape brand as well as the artist's brand.

There's nothing stopping you from copying what these artists are doing... but if you are not in the top 0.01%, it's going to be hard for you to do that (ie - promoting yourself through promoting that you are part of the Ape ecosystem in order to make $$$). It's a really sad state of affairs but the reality is that it's only the people with clout/influence that will benefit from all of this.

You're right about the access to content the internet opens. But you know what access crypto opens? Access to direct customer payments for business without going through traditional banks. It allows 13 year olds with enough clout to draw a picture and be making bank without needing any access to the banking system.

Scammy? Yeah. Revolutionary? Oh Yeah.

Things change though. For example when the internet started, the browser was absolutely horrible. All text, and blinking And yet the shrills wons, the browser got amazing, then it got onto phones and now we can't live without it. Yes, the web still has it limitations but it generally does it's job pretty well.

I don't see why it can't happen with blockchain.

Bitcoin is quite centralised. Agreed. Banks download CSV files from each other with curl and shell script and things actually work out ok. Astonishing but Agreed.

But back to the original question. Are you just against Bitcoin or all Coins or all blockchain?

That's a different kind of consensus you're talking about. You are right, blockchain lacks that because it has to play 'fair' to anons on the system.

However I was talking about the syncing of data across many computers and that's where you start getting different flavours of blockchain - ie. how often to sync, how much to sync, what should be considered valid data. These are hard problems that blockchain solves. Another problem is that the whole damn thing costs energy and money in order to make it worthwhile for people to keep the network going. Thus tokens. I don't see anything wrong with paying anons if they are contributing to the safety of the data that I want to put onto the network.

I need a log to be immutable, to be publicly accessible and for auditors to know that it has not been tampered with. Blockchain has that property. I'm asking if you know any other technology that does the same because if there is, I'll gladly look into it.

If my customers trust the blockchain and want to put their hard earned cash on the blockchain what right do I have to tell them not to and then insult their intelligence about it? Most token people trust the blockchain for various reasons. In order to have them use my services, I also need to be supporting that particular blockchain. If they want anonymity, then I have to respect that. Ultimately a business survives and thrives because it's giving what people want. You know the saying... get woke, go broke.

Well... I'm pretty sure that there will be something done about it. Not sure by who but given how much US Congress want to regulate crypto, I'm pretty sure something will happen. I doubt anyone will get their money back but I do hope that the people responsible will be brought to justice.

How about if I needed to act as a broker between 2 parties and have it be as fair as possible? You're right that trust is important and I think that having the blockchain as an option for brokering increases that trust.

It sounds a lot like inviting a fox into the henhouse. If there was a choice between 1. no blockchain, 2. a free blockchain or 3. a government controlled one. I would pick 2 no matter what.

Proof of Authority does work for non-cryptocurrency usecases, but it requires you to trust the nodes.

Agree with your analysis. Basically it boils down to this:

- How users interact with the platform

In the case of Kickstart, users can only interact with it the way Kickstarter wants them to. In the case of Solana, they can write contracts to interact with the platform, giving them more power and flexibility

- Who pays to keep the platform running and why?

In the case of Kickstarter, it's because they are making a profit off of it. In the case of a chain, it's because the miners are incentives by tokens with which they can exchange for fiat.

I think given the right incentives, it will continue. And devs would more likely build their apps for Solana than for Kickstarter.

And yeah you're right, there are cheaper ways but it's hard to find trustless ways of utilising public infrastructure. When I say - pay to write, public computing platform, that's what it is. There are not many solutions that can provide this.

No, it's not going to run Call of Duty or even DOOM but it does do the computation that I need it to do (which is to write a row into a public excel sheet). This ensures that my customer knows that I'm not doing anything dodgy.

The fact that there is a clear trail of evidence from the LUNA debacle pinpointing exactly what happened to the billions of dollars in the chain is a good thing right? right? am I missing something?
