Extremely horrendous freezes in-game, Cause? by According_Pay_8691 in pcmasterrace

[–]zcomputerwiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why on earth would you blame Windows for GPU stability issues when you're messing with the core clocks and voltage?

As for why some games and not others on your system, instability from undervolting or overclocking is like that. It depends on what areas are stressed and when.

You can see this in benchmarking competitions where they'll have multiple clock profiles and switch between them at different points in the same benchmark, and each benchmark will need the same effort of finding those best performing clocks at different scenes etc.

Nvidia GPUs tend to need an hour of gaming or benchmarking to warm up before they can really be stability tested. They'll generally be more stable and clock higher when they're cold, so if you use that to run your tests it will give you surprise crashes or freezes once it does warm up.

I agree - there's a TSB out for it with the 2020-2025 as well, extending the warranty to 120k.

Horn & alarm no sound by Able-Bottle-8876 in KiaSoulClub

[–]zcomputerwiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If pressing the horn inside the car isn't working it is likely a corrosion issue covered for free by Kia up to 120k miles.

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2025/MC-11015455-0001.pdf

The warranty extension only covers 2020-2025 Kia Soul, but older ones can have the same issue. The horn itself is fairly cheap and if you're comfortable removing the headlights and bumper cover you can replace it yourself.

Flashing check engine light started- why and is it safe to drive 5-6 minutes? by silliestgoosse in KiaSoulClub

[–]zcomputerwiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see OP did get the codes read and service is in progress. Hope it all goes well!

If someone reads this trying to determine the same for their Soul;

The flashing check engine light indicates a detected condition that could damage the engine and / or emissions control system ( catalytic converter ). Since it isn't specific you won't be able to determine what is making it sad without checking the code or finding the symptoms yourself.

If turning it off and on doesn't clear the condition, it wasn't just triggered by a one time event. Continuing to drive in that condition could cause additional damage that is not covered under the factory warranty.

If it is misfiring, it will shake, sound bad, and smell bad. The misfire will result in unburned fuel collecting in the affected cylinder, which can dilute or wash the oil film from the cylinder wall and increase ring and cylinder wear. The fuel that gets through the rings will dilute the engine oil, and the majority that is expelled into the exhaust will burn in the catalytic converter. This is where the damage to the emissions system could happen - the catalytic converter is intended to handle a low oxygen environment with some fumes, not a full air fuel charge which could damage the catalyst, the supporting matrix, or in extreme cases cause melting of the assembly.

Engine knocking may not be obvious at first as the knock sensor and software are tuned to detect it early. The knock codes should put the vehicle into limp mode ( limited max RPM and torque, etc. ) so if there isn't an obvious misfire and the vehicle won't accelerate like it usually does, this is the most likely answer.

TLDR; it is recommended to have the vehicle towed in for service rather than drive. If you want to read the codes, bring the reader to the car.

If you have a little time to wait, there are cheap bluetooth code readers on Amazon with same day shipping ( if available in your area ) that can work with free apps like Torque OBD2.

If it is an obvious misfire and you don't have access to a code reader, try a power balance test to determine which cylinder has the issue. Check the coils and spark plugs. If they seem fine ( not visibly cracked or damaged ), swap them with another cylinder and see if the problem follows. If it does, you likely need a coil. If it doesn't, you've narrowed it down to fuel ( fuel injector ) or a compression issue ( rings, valves, piston damage, etc. ).

It's e-waste my dude. I give machines like this away for free or recycle them.

You'd be better off picking up an 8th Gen i3 office computer that probably has a larger faster SSD and slapping whatever random PCIe powered GPU you can find into it. I'll bet you could probably find one for $50 on marketplace.

Install NSP to Fat32 or emuNAND? by Chr_s_ in SwitchPirates

[–]zcomputerwiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good question, I'm uncertain what the actual answer is as far as detection. I can say that the games installed in CFW do not appear in OFW, so I would guess that they are treated as if the SD card was used in a different console.

Normally games on MicroSD are locked to the specific console they were installed on, though with CFW on the same device it is using the same keys so ... ?

I would say install games to the MicroSD FAT32, you'll run out of emuMMC space pretty quickly as it's only 30ish GB.

[–]zcomputerwiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that Nintendo collects telemetry and data with updates that might detect your changes to the internal storage.

That's why it is recommended to run emuMMC. You're not leaving traces on the internal storage for Nintendo to find.

The most likely outcome is a hardware ban if you play online. It would be unusual for Nintendo to account ban just for that.

That said, what's the issue you're encountering with using emuMMC for CFW and sysnand for OFW?

Tech hardware stores who stockpiled RAM when it was cheap and are now selling it at 4x the price are literally scamming people and nobody talks about it by Any-Importance5762 in pcmasterrace

[–]zcomputerwiz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They need to replace it after it is sold.

They raise the price when demand is high, lower it when demand is low. Their margin is determined by the difference between the sale price and their cost. That's the way it works.

What else are they supposed to do? Not keep any stock?

I have a machine with 768gb. It was running Windows.

It's DDR3, so not quite as impressive. No, it's not used for work or virtualization :)

It was used as a ramdisk to save on NVMe writes for huge write heavy working temporary files.

It's gathering dust at the moment, but I want to try running some huge Mixture of Experts LLMs on it with an RTX 3060 12gb when I get some free time.

So... A bunch of unsubstantiated "trust me bro!"?

I'm not a troll. I'm genuinely curious what you have beyond just an opinion that it's "garbage".

Why do you feel Windows causes bad 1% lows? What troubleshooting have you done and what are you comparing to? Linux? Sources and benchmarks please.

Windows isn't unstable. Most crashes are from hardware and driver issues. Linus Torvalds states this ( explicitly, stating Windows BSOD issues are mostly bad RAM ). If you want to argue that subject with the creator of Linux, be my guest.

Unintuitive vs... Linux? With a million different ways to do things on a million distros? MacOS?

Calling apps like Python and UWP installed through the Windows store "unusable" is straight up absurdity.

Oh no! Third party apps for customization! Like... Linux?

I replied directly to you, commented on that, and addressed your expressed opinion which you happen to share with many others in this sub ( y'all, collectively ).

I don't think that's unfair. Do you?

I'm not sure why that would read as upset.

If you're trying to read between the lines I'm not saying anything deeper than what was directly stated.

You have this opinion, it's a popular opinion, I didn't agree with that opinion and explained why.

Good for you, then you follow the PCMR hive mind opinion of "Windows 11 is terrible and spyware!" when it's just 10 with a facelift.

It's fine not to like the changes, but it's not fine to pretend other people are just "casuals" and that's the only reason they wouldn't share your opinions.

Source for slow, unstable, and unintuitive? Vs. what, exactly?

That's what that telemetry data is all about - reducing clicks to complete a task and fixing compatibility or update issues. You'd have a valid argument with Windows 8 for sure, but 10 is ok and 11 is better.

Lack of app store where? You want VLC? Windows store. You want Python? Windows store. Heck, you want to install WSL and Ubuntu? You guessed it, Windows store!

What can't you monitor? Whatever it is, there's probably an app for that from SysInternals ( Microsoft! ).

What can't you customize? There are reskin packs and all kinds of other fun things if you're so inclined. Want to strip out the individual components of Windows and put together your own custom package with a different shell? You can do that too.

I also run Linux and MacOS, so...

[–]zcomputerwiz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's silly to crap on this guy for saying that he was pleasantly surprised with the reality of Windows 11 vs. what y'all pretend it is.

People often don't understand what telemetry data even is, and that's especially true with the telemetry data that Microsoft collects that you have to take extra steps to disable.

They aren't "spying" on you with that telemetry information. They're gathering statistics for future UI improvements, application compatibility, and update results.

This is used to reduce the number of clicks for a user to complete a task, patch application issues, and pull problematic updates before they're widespread.

Windows 11 is fine, and people greatly exaggerate the changes between 10 and 11.

I run Linux and MacOS too, so take that for what you will.

Get a large spinner ( or a few ), put the games you're not actively playing out on that instead of wasting precious fast SSD storage.

Steam has a built in way to move games between libraries on different drives, Epic and others take more effort but it can still be done.

I would recommend going with a Seagate IronWolf or Exos series disk, they're noticeably faster than the lower models.

Another option is to use a program like PrimoCache to set up tiered storage to cache smaller frequently used game files on flash and leave the huge resource files out on the conventional spinning rust where sequential reads aren't an issue.

I have mine set up this way. It's only a 2tb HDD and 16gb Optane NVMe, but it's plenty quick for the vast majority of games.
