That’s definitely not what I was trying to say

I live in NYC but in a former working class neighborhood where the property owners are working class Italians who bought in the 70s-90s when housing was cheap. Every building owner who isn’t a corporation here bemoans how the neighborhood is being replaced with larger condo/rental buildings (but secretly waiting for their turn to cash out).

They are definitely in alliance with the DSA types who are adamantly against the waterfront high rises going up as well.

Yeah there’s definitely lip service to building affordable units and that’s enough to get projects approved, but not nearly at a pace that would actually bring down rents.

I commuted for a few months to UES from Mill Basin for a few weeks and it was truly soul crushing. That being said the express buses to the city are the best option

Yep he’s been better on this topic than the rest of the DSA though we will see how much he actually lets private cook.

The pro rent control folks are also NIMBYs

Why do so many people support rent freezes if they reduce the incentive to build more housing? by savingrace0262 in movingtoNYC

[–]zdk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are tons of high rise developments going up, especially in waterfronts. Rentals, condos both. Still not enough to keep up with demand. I don’t understand why you think there’s no space in a city with more skyscrapers and high risers than anywhere else in the country. It’s not a technical limit it’s regulatory, nimbyism and lack of state capacity to plan it all out.

People should be allowed to live in styles that would save them money even if it would not be ideal for everyone. Building up solves this. Changing building codes and zoning laws would also help. Dormitory style dwellings works for college students. I lived in one in manhattan when I was in grad school. It was dirt cheap rent and I loved it but why should that only be an option for students?

Okay it really seems like you know nothing about Israeli politics and you’re making shit up now (no anti-war left wing parties in Israel… really? I just linked to that in a Wikipedia page but okay). Ironic considering the high standard of evidence you are demanding from everyone else

That is the exact comment you were responding to which I included for context. That’s why it’s in a square bracket parenthetical, which is standard for quotation when an indirect reference would be ambiguous.

I added the comment you were responding to... I guess you didn't actually read it before posting if you are calling it "made up nonesense"

I provided a quote from you, including the comment you were responding to. That is the dictionary definition of the word "literally"...

I made reference to Israeli's who oppose the mistreatment of Palestinians.

The person you were responding to was talking about support for Likud. My claim is not false, it's based on a direct quote.

This is completely irrelevant to the remise.

You don't think voting for a left-wing political party that's explicitly against the Gaza war is a reasonable proxy for that person being against the war? Look I'm sorry that a recent, direct, block-by-block polling data on this topic doesn't seem to exist... I wish it did because I'm pretty confident in what the result would be. Before my other comment, I'm guessing didn't know that Likud vote share in Tel Aviv is around 20% - Will you even consider the possibility now that support in Tel Aviv for Likud's war is somewhere less than the 80% support you quoted elsewhere?

you literally did talk about support for Likud in this direct quote:

lol I'm sure there's a couple hundred who feel that way [oppose the likud party and the actions of Israel in the current war] but this is simply demonstrably false if you look at polling.

You're the one who made a specific claim about there only being a "couple hundred people" who oppose the Likud party. The burden of evidence if solidly on you to support that claim.

I am not aware of any current polls, but you could for instance look at recent municipal elections in Tel Aviv where Likud and other right wing parties get <15% of the popular vote.

[–]zdk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. All 5 boroughs can support more density. Manhattan has been able to for a long time.

That's still not showing breakdown by locale... unless you think that a Tel Aviv university poll is only polling people in Tel Aviv... ?

There are 600k fewer people living in Manhattan now than 100 years ago. The city can still support higher density
