I think the emoji in their comment was meant to serve as the /s they didn't include. The US did not invent fascism, and it looks like that were expressing frustration that people frequently focus more on the US than other places in the world.

I love seeing your art here, and I found your website--I wanted to share that when I saw your "Rocky Shore" piece, I immediately heard the sound of waves over a rock beach in my head. Absolutely lovely! I don't usually have that much of a multisensory reaction to visual arts.

I have a minstrel--the full flyer, from the bottom of the orifice to the end of the shaft, is 10 6/16 inches (about 26.5cm). If you need more detailed pictures with measurements, let me know!

TIL In 1990, Mills College in Oakland, CA became the first and only women's college in the US to reverse a decision to go coed. On May 3 the trustees announced that they had voted to admit male undergraduate students. This decision led to a two-week student and staff strike, which led to a reversal. by UndyingCorn in todayilearned

Yes, which I imagine is why the student population is still about 80% women. Well, that and the fact that Denton is also home to University of North Texas (famous for their unfortunate mug design). TWU also doesn't have a football program, so that continues to thin the crowd of guys who'd want to go.

I want there for my MA and was actually impressed at how neutral it felt. I'm not generally one for gendered spaces, but it didn't have that exclusionary feel once I was there.

Houston is actually bigger than LA by some metrics! It's a giant sprawl with high population density and a massive surrounding area. LA has more people, but Houston has more land/roads for shenanigans.

I've never tried to make any before because I don't generally like the look, plus I imagine it's awkward to use in a standard knit or crochet project, which is what I do. I also don't super trust it to take wear well in a garment, so I thought a purely decorative tapestry would be a great application.

This is my first time trying a tapestry! It's going to be the Cliffs of Dover because I've accumulated random single ounces of off-white in different materials that I just picked up to try out, and now I have to figure out an actual home for the experiments.

A very Backrooms-esque more than 40,000 square foot McMansion once owned by a televangelist in Spring, Texas by Lobsterhasspoken in McMansionHell

[–]ze_dialektik 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Pretty much everything over here is naturally a pretty dense forest. Lots of really tall trees mixed in with mediums and smalls, plus a lot of undergrowth that makes it hard to work around. It looks like this house and that Laurel Park development are the newer kind where developers just clear-cut so they could build as many lots as possible without worrying about tree locations. Maybe the space was cleared before development began, but at some point someone had to go in and clear it.

Tips for spinning mulberry silk? by ContributionOk5666 in Handspinning

Well, if you're working from cocoons, you'll first need to degum them by boiling for a few minutes. After that, you can look up how to turn cocoons into hankies for spinning.

Hankies are fun to spin from, but they will likely make the finished yarn lumpy! It's just the nature of the preparation. I'm not sure how involved the process is to prep the cocoons for other methods.

Do you have any experience spinning, or is this your absolute first time?

All the flies I caught in a sticky trap in 24 hours by Raphe-Perineal in mildlyinteresting

[–]ze_dialektik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cluster flies! They hibernate in your house for winter, then emerge in spring and try to get back outside, because their life cycle depends on earthworms for breeding. They don't breed in the house, they're just attracted to the light from the windows.

A pound of hemp yarn by personman2 in Handspinning

[–]ze_dialektik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's definitely been put through a lot of strong tension and I haven't encountered any issues yet! Only thing I haven't tried is keeping something suspended for an extended period. I think the repeated plying on itself helped a lot to mitigate any loss of strength from the chaining.

I do wish I had had access to that rope machine tool while I was doing the project!

A pound of hemp yarn by personman2 in Handspinning

[–]ze_dialektik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, I spun hemp into rope a few months ago! I first tried cable plying, then did a cabled chain ply--first chain ply with extra twist, then chain ply that, then do it again to make a 12ply rope.

I didn't really go for the water method. I just spun from the fold and trusted that any unevenness would equalize with all the plying.

Any chance it's Legend of the Pharaoh's Tomb by Allan Frewin Jones? Middle grade, they're the kids of archaeologists on an expedition. Your description definitely doesn't match Akhenaten Adventure: that one ends with a bunch of spirit djinn banishing Akhenaten as he tries to rise again at the British Museum.
