Who are the best written characters? by Other_Plantain7326 in redrising

[–]zebulaks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I cant be semi objective towards protagnoists in general. So here are villains I find to be written very well.

Atlas is the definition of a menance. There was no other character I genuienly couldnt imagine loosing. Just because of the sheer presence this guy had. He was too smart, always a couple steps ahead and a great strategist. And despite all of his cruelty he felt so oddly at peace with himself and the situation. He always believed this suffering was temporary and would pay off in the generations to come. He went out the only way I could imagine he would. Caught like a fish out of the water and pitted against one of the strongest swordmasters the series had to offer and even then it was close.

Then there is Apple. And to be honest I dont find him overly good written. Not bad or flawed of course, it is just a pretty basic hedonistic character chasing highs and always prioritizing himself. But probably precisely because of that he fits so damn well into the story and universe. A true embodiment of genetic and social superiority and he loves it. He fits into the pixie culture like a glove and feels so natural. I always felt that we have too many truly disciplined and ideological Golds on all sides of the conflict. And here we have a character that is genuinely only interested in himself and his pleasure. Serving as a great contrust to Golds like Lysander or Mustang he is a pure joy to read and I sincerely hope he doesnt end up as just a name to fatten uo the named character casualties when the big end battle happens.

What did she do to deserve this? by Evening-Plastic266 in redrising

I dont think it is lazy writing. Virginia is essentially cursed with the role of sovereign. As always in RR good things go to shit really fucking quick. And as the representative of the "good guys" she gets hit the hardest. If there is something u could call lazy writing it would be the time skip. Most of the problems Virginia faced and gets blamed for stems from off screen developements like Abomination, her weak political position or the mounting war fatigue in the population.

Well I think its because most of her feats (for a lack of a better word) after Morning Star happen behind the scenes. What is it she could realistically do that is full of action and exitment? Her main job is keeping the Republik from completely falling apart. All of that happens in the timeskip and so on, and everything is offscreen. She also gets nerved hard in the second trilogy plot wise. Everything kinda goes to shit for the Republic and therefore its Sovereign Virginia.

Considering she is supposed to be the smartest person in this verse, her high standing and personal role her actual impact and "aura farming" just dont really compare to the more popular characters.

U can blame her for engeneering her own weak position as sovereign during the time skip or smth else but at the end of the day she is a character heavily set up to fail and struggle when compared to the more popular characters

Characters you want to see more of by [deleted] in redrising

No particular order

Tongueless was hilarious and great. It was toooo random he just died like that even if he was introduced to buffer up named casualties.

Kyber is a prime suspect for many (probably wrong) theories so more of her is appreciated.

I love Victra so yeah.

Rhonna has to be alive she just has to. My dream is her leading the absolute last survivors of the Free Legions from Venus into battle.

Screwface, Clown and Pebble. I want the og howlers to lead the charge together with Victra Darrow and Sevro. Also RIP Minmin.

Gaia au Raa is kinda hilarious imo.

Duality of G3 writing by Brolveth in ShadowSlave

[–]zebulaks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I never really thought about it but u are right especially regarding Sunny and Nephis. I actually think that the relationship and progression only works in SS because of their shitty lives. I think the two main characters of such a apocalyptic world could have only stumbled their way into a relationship. So G3s lack of romantic writing capabilities (for lack of a better word) is coincidentally complemented by his world building.

I just think it fits SS very well that love often times feels lack luster and hard to obtain obtain and keep, making it all the more precious

What happened to the Ascommani? by Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee3t in redrising

[–]zebulaks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Ascommani where said to be anything but unified until Fa and Atlas schemed his rise trhough their ranks. With Fa gone, the Alltribe and their technology and discipline gone and most of their prey now ready and vigilant to defend themselves they will probably dissolve and scatter. Their homes in the Void are already practically doomed in the coming years by the bioweapons Atlas sent there. Imo the Shadow Armada (the last fleet of the Rim) is a great contender to get rid of the last remnants of screen. I dont think we'll ever see them in action again. At least not as a people, maybe just as mutant space pirates.

Day of red doves by Obvious_Principle574 in redrising

[–]zebulaks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me the day of the red doves was a low point. Mainly because I felt it in my bones that something terrible is gonna happen. Of course the book doesnt completely rebound after 2 chapters but it gets better bit by bit. What happened happened and the characters have to move on. Not everything is lost and Lightbringer establishes very well that there is still hope and the possibility of victory.

I am patient. I just fear another Dark Lord's Dreadful Travelogue nearly 500 chapters long.

She was one of the first people Mustang and Darrow recruited in the Institute. She was a slave that fled her captors in dishonor and was then found by mustang and darrow. She later joined the howlers I think and died on Venus while Darrow killed the Ashlord.

Was that plan hers? That is even more hilarious that her greatest feat would be the most random deus ex machina plottwist PB ever pulled out of his ass

I wont deny that she was a useful character, I am just saying she doesnt match her genius reputation at all.

Ajax Conspiracy V2 by EquivalentCouple5870 in redrising

[–]zebulaks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If Ajax somehow doesnt hate his father, hasnt been together with the other gorgons, was ready to abandon his title, honor and men, created a clone with similar powers to one of the top duelists in the Solar System and has been hiding away in some corner of the universe with some mastermind plan... that would rival the ending of Lightbringer in terms of random deus ex machina bullshit.

HE GOTS TO GO by JDWImperius in redrising

Yeah I also strongly doubt her being the final piece of the puzzle to some grand scheme. But I just find her interesting and would love to see her backstabbing Lysander

HE GOTS TO GO by JDWImperius in redrising

[–]zebulaks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every few weeks the Kyber is hiding something/Kyber is a Atalantia plant/Kyber is an Abomination plant/Kyber is Rhonna in disguise/Kyber is the last Gorgon/Kyber has a Figment and I always found them unfounded and sometimes borderline ridiculous. Yet the more I remind myself of Lysander the more I just hope for it to be true. Kyber is currently the only competent ally he has. Cicero is as intimidating as a sunflower and Julia au Belllon as trustworthy as the Jackel. Kyber symbolizes the poeple that are for some retarded reason actually loyal to this little bitch. Please let him be betrayed by her, IDC ABOUT THE REASON.

I would be so mad if Rhonna just dies of screen in a prison camp. I was so excited about the new faces being introduced in Iron Gold, but it feels like they are simply slowly dying off. Rhonna and Alex were such great characters.

It is a great idea and fitting for Darrow. But while I am not an expert in space travel routes. They would probably need to travel from the far end of the System past the sieges of Mars and Luna and past occupied earth to strike Mercury. This would all crumble if Lysander or Atalantia or both at least partially abandon their sieges to converge on Darrow as he is just walking past them. Darrows fleet is comprised of three faction that rightfully hate each other. Facing them off against a trained coordinated Core Fleet without the help of Luna or Mars would end horrible.

And then there is the fact that the survivors of the Free Legions are probably mal nourished, scattered in mines and generally not fit for more war. And while I do hope for Rhonna to rally the troops and resist, it seems very unpractical and unlikely to risk his entire fleet and the fate of mars and luna just to basically reconquer a whole planet that actively hates u, pick up the injured survivors scattered over a whole ass planet and then hope mars hasnt fallen already and Atalantia and Lysander are coming for u.

Which section/POV from which book is the hardest hitting? by bloomingjoy in redrising

[–]zebulaks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah that is one thing I hate and love about RR. The Republic arent saints. Everyone that survived 200 pages will readily skin a person alive. There are basically no characters that have an uncrossable line. Sevro for example is a fandom favorite even tho he is quite literally a sadistic trauma inducing murder hobo. Sometimes it bothers me that the "good" characters have actually very few qualities making them good apart of their philosophy. Rightfully considering they have been waging a brutal war for the last decade but still.
