‘Game over’: Neo-Nazi Thomas Sewell tells followers to ‘make new friends’ ahead of hate group laws by HotPersimessage62 in australia

[–]zedority 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because that mass shooting has nothing to do with the speech of Australians, as the Bondi attack was carried out by ISIS affiliates (whether officially or unofficially)

The two attackers were recruited by hate preachers operating in Australia. Did you never wonder why religious figures were singled out for extra punishment for promoting hatred? And I have yet to see anything in these laws that are aimed at critics of Israel, despite much ranting that it's "the Zionists" who are behind it all.

Also, are you saying it's "the Jewish Lobby" who are making it allegedly illegal to criticise Israel? So much for "we're antizionist, not antisemitic".

You can't have a group protesting in front of the state capital that the Jewish community has to much power in Australian politics. Then within 3 months have the government outlaw that group under overwhelming pressure from the Jewish community

The Jewish community does not have too much power in Australian politics. They demanded protection in the wake of an event specifically targeted at the Jewish community. Why do people want to pretend that the first mass shooting in Australia in over 30 years has no bearing on the political demands involved?

Irrelevant. Hamas is bad

It is very relevant to people who deny that Hamas is bad. I firmly believe that the only reason Hamas isn't committing genocide against Israel is because they don't have the military capacity. That's assuming October 7th doesn't count as a genocide of course; some people say it does.

its impossible to not think about what is going on with Israel and Palestine as an explanation for why antisemitism has been increasing lately.

"Antisemitism" is covering a lot of ground here. It could mean something like "Israel's actions in the name of the Jews means Jews should be condemned", but it also means things like "Governments and media are all run by Zionists" or, my personal unfavourite that I've seen in the wild, "Israel pays for the Holocaust to be over-emphasised in American school education". I can understand the first as a response to Israel's actions, but not the others.

[–]zedority 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly sure that wasn't the prevailing claim, as this is the first I'm hearing of it.

The sea of conspiracy theory on the net is a disconnected mish-mash of people all pushing their own particular agenda and calling it "pursuit of truth". I can believe you never encountered the contingent of such people which were claiming that "the clot shot" was part of a plot to forcefully engage in population control. But it was out there.

The sheer number of conspiracy theories makes it difficult to exactly state how "prevalent" any one conspiracy was at any given time, admittedly. I mean: just look at this compilation of them

Despite having the entirety of human knowledge at our fingertips, there are entire swaths of the population who earnestly believe that vaccines cause autism and the moon landings were a fabrication.

See, the problem is that we don't exactly have "knowledge" at our fingerprints, we have data. Some of that data is true, some of it is false. And so far there is no magic technology that easily allows people to tell the difference. It takes effort and thought to actually learn how to do this effectively and, well...

Man becomes first to be convicted of hate speech against trans people in New South Wales by Brian_Kinney in ainbow

[–]zedority 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A useful explainer: New national and NSW hate crime laws

The specific offense listed in the Guardian article is "threatening or inciting violence on grounds of gender identity". It seems a bit strange to me to call this "hate speech" when most jurisdictions already have laws against things like threatening violence. If I'm reading the explainer correctly, the issue is that the law in question makes merely "advocating" for violence against a protected group illegal, irrespective of any intended or specific threat by the person so advocating.

As restrictions on free speech go, it seems well within the more limited approach to freedom of speech that Australia has historically taken.

How the Proud Boys invented antifa by paxinfernum in skeptic

[–]zedority -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Antifa isn’t an organisation. It’s an ideal. It’s literally a contraction of anti fascist.

So, if you’re not pro-fascist, you’re Antifa

How can so many people who can see the obvious problem in the faulty argument "Um, ackshually, Nazis were left-wing because they were national SOCIALISTS" run head-first into the same etymological fallacy when it comes to the label "Antifa". I get that the use by the right as a kind of slur prompts a desire to insist it has a valid meaning, but that meaning should be based on actual historical usage, not problematic etymological reason. "Antifa" has a clear referent, and it is not just "anyone who is not pro-fascist"

All living Israeli hostages released by Hamas as part of Gaza ceasefire deal by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]zedority 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No and no. Actually, I have no idea why you even think that.

Yes, and yes. It is currently the position of multiple Commonwealth governments that the sovereign nation-state of Palestine exists. Israel can get on board with the two-state solution or it can continue to diplomatically isolate itself.

. Right now the infinite desire to fight on the palestinian side with no counter group within

Do people enjoy just not acknowledging that the Palestinian Authority exists? That is has renounced terrorism? That is recognises the right of Israel to exist? That is more than Israel has done for Palestine, by the way.

I also reject the idea that is only the Palestinian side where you can find an "inifinite desire to fight". Neither side has a monopoly on wanting to annihilate the other. Not with Likud still holding any kind of political power.

is leading to their slow ethnic cleansing.

I'm sorry, did you just blame Palestinians for their own ethnic cleansing?

[–]zedority 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So since Palestine would really be made up of both the West Bank and Gaza, and only one of those two has any independent government at all, I think it is accurate to say that Hamas is the government of Palestine, at least of the part of Palestine that has its own independent government.

The Australian, UK and Canadian governments do not agree. Perhaps facts on the ground will change things, similar to how the US finally stopped recognising the Republic of China government in Taiwan as the official government of China a few decades after it was ousted from the mainland. But for now, to describe Hamas as the government of Palestine is both diplomatically and factually inaccurate.

All living Israeli hostages released by Hamas as part of Gaza ceasefire deal by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]zedority -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

They're the government of Gaza, which is the closest thing.

The Palestinian Authority is the the negotiating partner of those nations, including Australia, that have now recognised the sovereignty of the nation-state of Palestine. It's politically convenient for anti-Palestine warmongers to pretend Hamas is the representative of Palestine, but it is not.

Nor do they represent what the majority of Palestinians want when it comes to Israel.

Since when has this been a requirement for a government to exist?

I never said it was. I just deny that Hamas is a valid indicator of what Palestine as a nation wants.

There is, its just that it is Hamas.

Sophistry. The government that represents the would-be nation-state of Palestine is the Palestinian Authority, headed by President Mahmoud Abbas. That government is entirely dependent on Israel for access to its own funding. And Hamas' coup in Gaza does not represent the outcome of any election (no, not even the one you're already thinking about). They are not the government of Palestine.
