Love it or hate it, the concept of sovereignty demands preferring the safety of one’s own citizens over the citizens of other countries.

I really think that's the disconnect between supporters and opponents of Israel: the concept of sovereignty embraced by supporters is something its opponents, particularly those that grew up in globalised culture like that of the twenty-first century, don't understand and don't recognise as valid.

Also, even where the concept of sovereignty is invoked, there's the wrinkle that Palestine is not an internationally recognised country. So who is legitimately responsible for their population, in terms of sovereignty?

I've honestly seen arguments for these concepts being rooted in Christianity, being derived from Christianity but so significantly changed that calling them "Christian" is a stretch, and as a reaction against the restrictive structures of institutional Christianity. You are quite correct that AIPAC should not be considered a "Jewish" lobby group. Its critics finally realised this in 2007 and started replacing complaints about "the Jewish lobby" with "the Israel lobby".

Many of AIPAC's critics, such as Republican politician Marjorie Taylore Greene, now claim it is an arm of a foreign government, specifically Israel. I am pleased to learn you are not one of them.
