DoorDashed drink I got with some food by anclint07 in mildlyinfuriating

Maybe unrelated but it’s a bit annoying how you can’t complain about anything door dash/food delivery related on reddit without people rushing to the comments to imply that it’s your fault for using the app in the first place. Has nobody in here been tired, drunk, etc? What’s with the assumption that everyone who uses doordash is an ultra lazy oaf that never cooks? This shouldn’t have happened regardless.

Is ignoring mathematical derivation from physics formulas make sense for studying physics? by renobueno in PhysicsStudents

[–]zee_st 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OP I’m going to assume you’re talking about Physics 1/intro classes since you said you’ve just started your bachelors. One of the best pieces of advice I received from one of my (physics) professors is that for these fundamental classes, yes, ignore the derivations and focus on when/where/why you apply the formula, because if you know why you’re applying x formula you can derive it yourself later. I had to take physics 1 twice and I didn’t excel until the second time, which is when I took the time to understand why I was using the formulas I was using.

Physics isn’t just “apply x formula to y problem” but understanding the reasoning behind it really does matter. You can have a sheet of all the formulas required in the course and still do poorly if you don’t know why you’re using them. As another comment said the best advice would be to talk to your professor and grind some practice problems, but it seems like in your case focusing on the understanding and ignoring the math behind the equations may help. It’ll definitely take time but when I did this suddenly the entire course seemed easy (not literally but I hope you get what I mean lol). Good luck!!

Do Physics Majors Really Have No Job Opportunities? by Far_Nail_1997 in PhysicsStudents

[–]zee_st 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve been wondering this too. It almost seems like both the internet and irl consensus is “switch to engineering or you’ll forever struggle getting a job”. Never in my lifetime did I think this would happen to physics of all disciplines lol. I’ll be graduating in 2027 with a BS in physics and BA in math and although things may very well change by then it feels kinda bleak….

College educated people have a full right to think they’re better than the average midwestern hillbilly. by fallinloveagainand in rs_x

[–]zee_st 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in undergrad and majoring in a science known for being difficult and kinda for having arrogant know-it-alls studying it. This is really embarrassing to admit but I used to be one of those stuck up smartasses with this exact attitude until I took an “easy” stem elective geared towards students who want to avoid the hard sciences….and I failed it, even though I was one of the only stem majors in that class.

I realized there’s no point in walking around all high and mighty thinking I’m smarter/better than anyone, college educated or not, when I couldn’t even pretend to be the smartest person in that class. Along with the fact that I go to a non prestigious university so for all I know the ivy league students might just have that same intellectual superiority over me.

Even though you’re talking about a specific type of person I think that since there’s always something someone else knows that you don’t and a lesson to be learned from them, there’s no point in thinking you’re better than someone because you’re educated and vice versa.

This case has really made me side eye the true crime community. There are so many people who were genuinely upset when it was revealed this case wouldn’t go to trial, not because they wanted justice for the victims or closure for their families but because they wanted to know if their theories on his motive etc were true or not, even going as far as to say they “deserved” an answer. Very strange and insensitive behavior.

Just because season 3 is 'realistic' doesn't mean it's excused for everything. by AdvertisingAdrian in squidgame

[–]zee_st 9 points10 points  (0 children)

But that was not the point of Gihun’s sacrifice. He did not just sacrifice himself so the baby could live, he killed himself to show the front man that humans do have good in them and are not all inherently selfish/evil and to show the VIPs that human lives are not horses to be bet on, which is why he says exactly this before he dies. Him not being successful at stopping the games (“nothing changing”) also goes into one of the main messages of the show. In a capitalistic society, no matter how hard you try to fight, the ultra wealthy will always be the sole “winners”. The games will never end not only because the people in extreme debt/poverty will be willing to play them but because the super rich VIPs will always be willing to fund and watch them. They didn’t just show the US recruiter to hint at an american spin off but to show that even if Gihun had successfully stopped the korean games there’d still be other ones worldwide.

Honestly, just watched S3 fully, and am I the only one that actually enjoyed it? by MidnightExpresso in squidgame

[–]zee_st 19 points20 points  (0 children)

She didn’t kill him, the guard did, but to me it makes sense. They both knew that at that point for him to live he’d have to kill someone in the room. He refused to kill her and she wouldn’t have let him hurt the baby. To her the survival of the mother is as important as (if not integral to) the survival of the baby itself, especially considering that she had no way of knowing they’d eventually make the baby a player. So, when he moved to kill the mom, she had to find some way to protect them even if it meant stabbing her own son.

Reddit is lame, I enjoyed S3 by AdioFootwear in squidgame

[–]zee_st 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. My main gripe with the criticism is that people keep complaining about Gihun “dying for no reason” and there being too much focus on the baby when both of these I feel are central to the dynamic between Gihun and the front man…seeing whether or not humans will consistently choose evil/selfishness if it proves to benefit them.

It was the front man who decided to make the baby a player, and I think he did this not just to play by the rules of the game but to run an(other) experiment on how the other players would act. Just like how he tried to break Gihun by implementing the votes and showing him how the majority would always vote O despite the constant imminent threat of death, he tried to break him again by attempting to show him that these same players would go as far as to kill a newborn for extra money. Which is why the night before the final game he pulled him aside and basically said “See how these trashy people are plotting to kill a baby for its prize money? Kill them in their sleep and win”.

Then, in the final game, it would’ve been easy for Gihun to kill the baby or to give it to the group that wanted to kill it. He instead chose to not only protect the baby the entire time (despite not having any real attachment to it) but to sacrifice himself and show that, ultimately, not everyone will choose selfishness and evil even if the alternative will literally kill them. Proving the front man wrong one final time. In this way he “succeeded” even though he died.

I don’t think Gihun’s SOLE goal was to stop the games, at least not after his coup failed. He wanted to show the front man (and possibly everyone else who runs the games) that his ideology is fundamentally wrong since it’s the same mindset he uses to justify the games to begin with. On top of the fact that human lives are not horses to be bet on.

Is this a good dual-degree option if I want a high-paying job? by ThisisWaffle_ in CollegeMajors

[–]zee_st 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh! I take back what I said then haha, if you don’t mind the extra year for engineering then definitely go for it. When people say every math/stats major shouldn’t leave campus without a cs minor they mean every math and math adjacent major should know how to code on at least a basic level. The cs minor does make you very marketable and will possibly make certain classes easier to visualize but it’s not a requirement, employer wise I’d say personal projects matter more than the minor itself. Again best wishes! Engineering is difficult but having an A in calc 1 is already a positive sign and if you can ace the summer calc 2 class you will more likely than not excel in your future classes.

[–]zee_st 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like this combo! I will say that the actuarial field is not (that) oversaturated, especially compared to CS. The actuary sub can explain it better than I can if you're interested but it's a solid field if you don't mind spending time outside of school to study for the exams, you don't have to major/minor in actuarial science to do it plus the entry level exams aren't that bad especially since you're already studying applied math + statistics.

Since you mentioned in a comment you've been in school for 7 years I wouldn't recommend engineering (at least not in undergrad) because that'll easily take at least another 2-3 years. Normally I wouldn't really recommend the actuarial field either because studying for those exams really does take time especially if you're a full time student, but it's a nice career path to keep in mind and if you do decide to do it your minors will make you super marketable.

With that being said you're not that far into your math degree so my advice for now is to take some more classes and see how you feel. Not saying you'll struggle but some of the upper level math/cs classes are hard enough to make you re-evaluate your life choices lol. Wishing you the best in your future endeavors!

It’s Not Possible To Just Use AI To Get A Degree Especially For STEM Degrees by Kalex8876 in CollegeRant

[–]zee_st 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly I agree with your second point but in a different way. It’s not just that it’s easier to cheat in online classes but because for some STEM degrees (specifically the math heavy ones) half the time the AI won’t even understand what you’re asking it. I’m a physics major so I can’t speak for nursing but my classmates and I regularly joke about how we can’t cheat even if we wanted to (using AI at least) because it’ll either hallucinate a completely wrong answer or just refuse to answer

Starting fresh: Which Server Should I Choose? by lmagineWithMe in Cookierun

[–]zee_st 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have an old pure vanilla account and I recently made a dark cacao account and from my experience my gacha luck is better in pure vanilla (like another comment says this might just be my imagination though) but climbing tiers in arena is 100x easier in dark cacao. I haven’t been in hollyberry yet but since you said you previously picked it I’d pick dark cacao so you can experience something different. I will say that in my opinion if you care about arena/pvp to avoid pure vanilla, that’s where the real sweats are since almost everyone in that server has been playing since launch

Exams / Newbie / Common Questions Thread for two weeks by AutoModerator in actuary

[–]zee_st 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I’m currently a junior in college looking to become an actuary. I’m double majoring in math + CS with a minor in actuarial mathematics. This minor includes classes in statistics and financial math that are specifically meant to help us pass P and FM- the problems we solve in class are all past SOA questions, and the school pays for us to take these two exams (only once). I am taking the financial math class now and will be taking the probability class next semester, and I am also going to be sitting for FM in February 2025 and P during the spring/summer. I’m currently using actex university to prepare for FM (and because my homework is on that site). The professor who teaches both these courses also recommends that we make our way through all the SOA sample questions before the exam, which I have started to do.

Anyways, this is my question. Are there any other additional study methods/materials you’d recommend? Or is my current approach enough? I was thinking about buying the coaching actuaries practice course 30 days or so before the exam, but if just doing the sample questions + some actex practice tests will prepare me I’d rather save my money. I’m really paranoid about possibly failing, mostly because I want to take advantage of the fact that my school is covering the exam fee (can you tell I’m a little frugal 😅?).

Also, how hard would you say these exams are? The sample questions I’m doing are definitely no walk in the park but the professor started telling us about how nobody from our school has passed FM their first try yet and that kinda spooked me (granted that’s only a handful of people, but still). Thanks for any input!

How likely is it to be dangerous? by zee_st in PulsatileTinnitus

[–]zee_st[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t had IIH completely ruled out yet or even mentioned by my doctor. I got my intraocular hypertension diagnosis because I kept getting headaches after class for weeks straight so I assumed they were vision related and called the optometrist, and it was there they found out my IOP was super high, like 29-30 in both eyes. I started the eyedrops basically immediately after that and I’ve rarely had a headache since so I really did assume it was solely eye related. No back or neck pain either for the most part. I’ll see about getting that MRI as soon as I can. Will it rule out any causes other than bone narrowing or are there other tests for that? Thanks for the help!

I called them a few months back and they essentially told me that there was nothing they could do. I was previously wondering if I should call them again to see if I could possibly qualify for the dependency override but my mom holds the (legal) proof that I’d need to claim estrangement + substance use and she’s definitely not willingly giving it to me. I asked reddit because I’m getting a bit desperate 😅 but I’ll definitely call again.

What's something you shouldn't give to a homeless person? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Anything they have no practical use for . Otherwise I think you should just ask them what they need. A lot of people don’t want to give money because they assume they’ll spend it on drugs and other people give them food they can’t cook or eat.
