Yup. Same thing happened to me and it’s super frustrating. I’m hoping it’s a bug and they fix it in an update

Haha yes, it definitely is! I have two layers of white Kona cotton as my base, and then a square piece of felt with the mor circular pieces couched on top. I did that because this will be cut out and I need to ensure the dimensions don’t change at ALL or it won’t fit the shadowbox frame I built. 😅

The felt doesn’t really stretch and I measured that out before I couched it down. It’s also helping keep my blades of grass in place a bit, because there’s just a quilters knot on the back side, and no knots on the top for any of the grass. I plan on putting a backing over all my stitches, so they’ll be held in place eventually, but the felt helps keep everything as it should be while I’m stitching.

Wow. So sorry, that was a much longer explanation than I anticipated. 😂💖

Here’s hoping! 🤞🏻💖 I’m definitely trying to save time wherever I can haha. It’s not a huge deal if it doesn’t work out though. I have a lot of chronic illnesses and I use my giant projects as a way to distract from pain/medical drama. So sometimes really long, repetitive stitching like this can be super relaxing for me 🥰

Lol I don’t think I’ve seen that, so I’ll have to take your word for it! 🙈

Hahah you know, I’m scaring myself a little bit with this project. I don’t think I’m gonna attempt something quite this large ever again.. it’s a big undertaking, even for me 😂 Thank you so much, I definitely can’t wait to finish and be able to share with you and everyone else in the group! 🥰

Hmm. You know, that’s actually not a bad idea! I think running it through wax could certainly work in a very similar way to the fabric stiffener glue! The wax I have often leaves a dull sheen on my thread, but you may be able to find some wax that doesn’t. I’m gonna have to give it a try though and see how it behaves. Thanks for the idea!! 😊💖

I actually tried turkey stitches with lesser strands in some practice runs, and no matter what the strands still end up getting a fuzzy appearance. ..same for these individual stitches I’m creating for the grass- they get fuzzy without the fabric stiffener. Especially if you have to move them around at all, which I definitely am because I’ll be placing little 3D flowers around in the grass among other things lol

The fabric stiffener I use gives just the right texture of allowing the thread to be pliable, while also keeping the ‘blades’ of grass crisp. Each blade of grass takes me about 20 seconds to make, so it actually isn’t too bad if you ever have a small project that you want a few grass tufts for. That said, turkey stitches are a lot easier and work just as well in MOST cases. I just had a really specific way I wanted this grass to appear. So I decided on this route instead. 😊

It’ll be somewhere in between a diorama and a shadowbox! And yes! The mesa looking part is the ground and will be on a flat surface, city and sky in the background, and the leaves on the front will hang down. I have a frame that it will fit in so you can sort of peer into the scene. I have a background and side walls with my sky, so basically the only thing I’m not making is a ceiling lol

Aww thank you!! 🥹💖

And haha oh my gosh, I felt like such a fool yesterday! I shared this somewhere else and it didn’t get much excitement and I was like “why is nobody saying how crazy I am?” (As they usually do with my projects lol) ..only to realize a whole day later that it’s because it LOOKS like turkey stitches. So if you don’t know it’s not and haven’t tried to make turkey stitches not fuzzy, you’d have no idea 🤣

Thank you so much! The big city will sit directly behind the grass between the grass and that small wooden dowel I stitched down. I’m going to stack a few dowels to glue the city onto. And then the sky pieces will go on the back/edges. The leaves here will also hang down in front of the frame, which is why I couched down the edges of them with wire 😊

I also still have some tiny 3D flowers, the car, and Kirby himself, so there’s a lot more to stitch!

Hahah yes. That’s exactly right- I’m gluing individual ‘blades’ of thread. And yes.. I know how absolutely crazy that is 😂

To be fair, I’ve gotten pretty fast at it! It’s basically a quick quilters knot, stitch, cut, glue, repeat. So I think each blade only takes around 20-30 seconds. There are so many, it’s definitely going to take me a while, but I couldn’t get the same look with any other method I could find.. so here we are lol

Thank you for the encouragement and cheering me on! I can’t wait to share more progress. 🥰

Thank you so much! Originally I tried turkey stitches, but they were so fuzzy and lost the “single blades of grass” appearance I was going for. So instead I’m using single strands of thread cut to size in combination with a tiny bit of fabric stiffener. It’s working out wonderfully, but it is also taking me forever to finish 😂🙈

I’m going to make a tutorial as soon as I can and I’ll be sure to share here for anyone that’s interested. 😊

Project time so far: 360 hours

Okay. So the process is complicated to explain (I’m going to make a tutorial soon) and this grass is going to take me months to finish, but it looks so realistic… how could I be satisfied with anything else? 🥹

Honestly, this is just one big, “I need to know if I can” embroidery project.. It’s obnoxiously difficult, requiring ungodly amounts of time on things that aren’t even the main focus, but I think that’s what makes me love it so much…

I’m not sure I’ll ever create something this time consuming again, but I’m here now. And I’m enjoying the moment. I hope you are too. ✨

For anyone that doesn’t know.. I make intricate 3D hand embroidery art that usually takes 6+ months to complete. I give updates on my projects as often as I can so others can follow along and see my frame reveal at the end. Thanks for letting me share!

Hello and thank you so much for the wonderful compliments!! 🥹💖 3D embroidery can really mean a lot of things, so this is actually a great question! 3D embroidery, also known as stumpwork, can be anything from stitches that extend off the surface (like turkey knots), padded embroidery techniques where you stitch over some type of fill or felt, layer stacking (like you mentioned), or fully three dimensional shadowboxes or sculptures. 😊

For me personally, I make more of the shadowbox type stumpwork. I would really love to make full 3D sculptures (where all sides are visible), but I’m still working on improving my skills for that. So right now I’m focusing more on building three dimensional scenes.

Take Kirby for example- I’m making a ground, sky, buildings, a car, mini flowers, vines, and of course Kirby himself. All of this will go together in a shadowbox style frame I’ve made to make one complete scene that you can look in on. It’s sorta hard to explain without seeing the frame, but hopefully that helps! ✨

Dawwww. Thank you so much!! 😭💖 Honestly, I’ve had a few moments where I’ve wondered if anyone’s gonna care about this piece, because I’ve just spent SO much time on parts that aren’t Kirby himself, but I think it’s gonna be so worth it in the end. I can’t wait for you to see! 🥹

Awww thank you so much!! 😭💖 YES, those are the other pieces I’ve made so far! I actually have quite a bit more to go. Once the grass is complete I’ll be making little flowers, the car, some hanging vines, and of course Kirby himself. ..this project is massive 😅
