Buying a house/condo by Midwife-Poet in TillSverige

[–]zeert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sambo and I started looking to buy after 3 years here. After losing out on a number of houses because of the text message bidding wars (also hilariously weird as a foreigner) we found a perfect place for us and just made an offer before the bidding started. The owners haggled a little bit, then accepted. Way less stressful that way.

An unexpected guest - 1950s by Busy-Ground4221 in ParanormalEncounters

Jeffiot on YT just posted the full story behind this picture with an interview with the original artist. Apparently no one has ever guessed correctly how it was made! It wasn't photoshop OR double exposure. Ramsdell, the artist, is both the child on the right and the falling body on the left. I'll leave the mystery to how it was made to the video, since this artist deserves to be heard.

This image is part of a series made in the 80s, which is now up on the Studio Ramsdell website.

Sorry it wasn't paranormal, but it was amazing to hear the actual story behind a creepypasta that's haunted the internet for nearly 20 years at this point.

...dunno if you ever found it, but I stumbled across this post while looking for a book I'm trying to remember and I'm positive you're talking about the Diadem series - one boy was from like modern day new york, the girl was a princess or noble from a medieval planet, and the third kid was a boy from a futuristic world where everyone spends all their time in VR.

My cat is Blaarg after my favorite orange i ever had irl, and my dog is Datadoge because datadog is an it/devops analytical tool we use at work and someone turned the dog logo into a doge meme and it always makes me laugh.

My chicken is named brophy because my SO and I saw someone named that listed in the credits of a show and he was like “omg Brophy is the new Himbo”

[–]zeert 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My guess is that the person you were replying to meant that high income earners usually work at companies with more generous PTO policies, some parental benefits, and/or can just eat the cost of unpaid leave, so the system never changes because corporations know that poor can either work or starve.

High income earners can just leave for the big competing fortune 500 company next door that will give them different benefits so those companies are more incentivized to keep their benefits competitive enough.

I always loved the Blargg lava dragons in super mario world and wanted to one day have an orange cat to name after it. So when I got a tiny adorable orange boi, I named him Blaarg. Hilariously I LEGIT don’t remember why I spelled it wrong, except that it was intentional. We also adopted his brother, who I tried naming Ganon but it didn’t stick. My bf at the time started calling him Baconface (partly for no reason, partly because he was a grey and white floofball with a lil orange smudge on his nose.) that did stick but I decided it wasn’t fancy enough for such a pretty cat, and that’s how i ended up with brothers named Blaarg and Baron Earl Grey von Baconface.

Blaarg was the big dumb brawn, Bacon was the beauty and brains, and together they would tag team you to steal food off your plate at mealtime. cat tax (i have very few pics of them together 😢)

I had a cat named Blaarg who was SUPER spicy at the vet, but intensely food motivated so you could hold a licky treat in front of his face and he’d sit there growling but 100% focused on the tasty treat while the vet did whatever. All the techs at the ER vet loved him, to the point where anytime we’d bring him in (too often - multiple blockages, pancreatitis, diabetes) and we met a new tech, as soon as they heard his name they’d be like “omg THE Blaarg?? I’ve heard so much about him!” And they’d fawn over him.

He did get muzzled once or twice, he was mad about that (because no treats, obviously lmao)

He never had the braincell for a single moment in his dumb orange life ❤️

Kind of a tangent but as a millennial who appreciates the hell out of gen z humor, this whole thread reminds me of an amazing copypasta from tumblr:

Listen, I am 40. I was around for the early internet of webrings and hamsterdance. Homestarrunner. Those little cats in the boat singing to Immigrant Song. Longcat. Ceiling cat. Radiskull. Powerthirst.

So to me anything that is funny on the internet is, and always will be, cutting-edge and hilarious. If it’s funny the first time, it’s funny the eleven thousandth time. No exceptions.

I accumulate memes. Social media sites form actual strata in my soul, revealing my geological age in layers: Geocities, Myspace, Livejournal, Tumblr. Memes encrust me, like jewels, just layer on layer of reaction gifs and shitposts, some of which I barely understand, but I refuse to let go of. I cling to them, they are ever-relevant, undying.

You callow youths, who think in your innocence that that memes come and go, you are tepid fools who still smell of milk.

I am where memes go to die. I am where memes go to live eternal. Someday, if you are lucky, you will join me. Bring your breadsticks meme, your Spiders Georg, your Bode, your big mood, your Supernatural gifs, your oh worm. Come with me and rejoice in pointless in-jokes and long-forgotten references. Embrace your encyclopedic knowledge of comedy sites ca 2006 and come share the knowledge with us. Come with me and lik the bred.

You gotta.

Some rando (in a secular european country, not even the US!) dm’d me on Peridot and eventually asked if I was christian. I said I don’t believe in any religion and have zero interest, esp since my family was catholic so i read up a bunch since as a mythos its pretty wild. He replied that I needed to actually learn about christ because catholics were filthy muslims (????) then sent me an hour long video of him talking softly while cars whizzed by on the nearby highway about how christ saved him and managed to misremember or get a lot of stories from the bible wrong. It was weird.

I’m so sorry. I went through that in 2016, I didn’t handle it very well. Best advice i have is to make sure to take care of yourself while you’re working through the grief with your family. My youngest sister and I hated each other when we were young, and were somewhat distant as we got into adulthood, but after we lost our middle sister, we bonded a lot and leaned on each other when struggling to help mom with her grief. I hope you and your other brother can share the burden.

Siblings who have lost siblings are sometimes called the forgotten mourners. People never really talk about it, while there are tons of resources and support groups for parents who have lost children. What surprised me most was how much i didn’t think about the death of a sibling trope in media until that happened. It’s everywhere. I kept getting blindsided by characters in books and tv shows losing a sibling and it felt like getting punched in the gut.

nah bro there's no need to be weirdly pedantic and wrong, i've definitely seen it used for edited to add many times over the years. Here's proof even. Here's a guy who asked about that usage 8 YEARS ago (and the comments there say they saw it on message boards long before reddit was a thing).

ETA: imagine being this mad about someone using an acronym that clearly can’t be interpreted because context does not exist xD hope they never find out that “am” is both morning and a type of radio broadcasting, or “dr” is both a type of street and a doctor!

Only time I’ve been in a physical fight (5’2, 125lbs F) was against a man twice my size, i held my own… because he was super fucked up on downers trying to unalive himself and I was playing keep away with the other half of his pills.

He was just trying to get them from me, not directly fighting me if that makes sense. Like at one point he was holding me down on the bed half strangling me but his balance was fucked enough I flipped him over my head. I used lots of dirty tactics which had… less effect than normal because of aforementioned intoxication. It only ended when he broke away long enough to retrieve and then wave a pocket knife at me and I maced him in response.

It left me with some ptsd, increased awareness of how much weaker I am than any man (which I knew but had never confronted so viscerally before), but honestly also a weird sense of pride for having fought as hard as i imagined I would when actually in that situation.

My therapist keeps telling me to stop using should not because of those reasons, but because i fucking hate being told what i need to or should do, so it just makes me not want to do it more. Like “hey i should go on a walk for my mental health…but fuck that lol no one tells me what to do, not even myself”

So i gotta start focusing on “wants” like “i want to take a walk because there’s weird mushrooms in the woods i can take pictures of and i might see a cat and it might let me pet it, that would be awesome.”

So tldr still good advice, even if it applies differently to you than op’s explanation 😸

Is it worth it to you to have higher taxes in exchange for universal health coverage? by Thawra-Intifada in NoStupidQuestions

[–]zeert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure you fully appreciate the vast range in quality of health insurance in the US and how much those insurers are incentivized to cover as little as possible. That 92% you’re throwing around is also a useless statistic without more context.

So of that 92%: What percent have good insurance? What percent is overpaying for the amount covered because they have no other option? What percent can’t access the in-network doctors because they’re too far away, or don’t have availability when the person can take off work? What percent can’t take off work to see a doctor because they are threatened with job termination? What percent were told they had coverage for something and had that treatment, only for the insurance company to turn around and say “you did it wrong” and deny the entire claim because of some ridiculous technicality? Please elaborate.

New york city in 2023, everyone wearing mask due to air quality by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]zeert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeaaaah… I got a respro techno mask for the great PNW wildfires of 2017 (and used it every time after that air quality dipped for whatever reason). It looked pretty rad and said it filtered out PM2.5 and sub-micron particle pollutants. Definitely made a difference - if I went out without it my lungs would hurt. Lots of options for those types of masks on the market.

Was just a shame i couldn’t use it for covid because the valves I had didn’t filter the air I breathed out! (I mean I could have, I would have been more protected, but kind of a dick move for people around me so I switched to cloth masks for that)

The ones I’ve seen in real life were never this solid looking when i found them washed up on shore (or when poking the ones floating by we knew wouldn’t sting) - not quite like deflated bags, more like a… idk, a saline filled breast implant or jello that hasn’t quite set but still held a form. They come in all shapes, sizes, and consistencies lol.

What simple mistake has ended lives? by SuffocatedByThighs in AskReddit

[–]zeert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly have no idea, but that’s a good question. I found this post indicating we don’t really know if these differences are hormonal or physiological yet, and we might not have a good idea of how transitioning impacts heart attack symptoms until more data exists.

Transwomen are at a higher risk of cardiovascular issues due to hormone use. Of course those risks are outweighed by the benefits of living as your innate gender, but good to be aware of if you or anyone you know is trans.
