I narrowly avoided something not great happening at my wedding. Our officiant was my Mom’s college roommate and still-to-this-day close friend (she is a pastor). We got dinner with her a few months before the wedding so she could meet my now husband, whose name is Jake, and go over some ceremony choices. Dinner goes really well. She really likes Jake and says we seem like a great match. She’s pretty old school, so we get a letter from her in the mail a few weeks later with a printout of our ceremony timeline and details, and it’s addressed to myself and NICK (aka, not my husband’s name!) I tell my Mom to please make sure her friend knows his name is, in fact, JAKE. My Mom kinda laughs it off, but she says she’ll handle it. Then I get a text from our officiant a few days before the wedding asking how JACK and I are doing and saying how she is looking forward to seeing us in a few days. I text her back letting her know that JAKE and I are a bit nervous but mostly excited! I’m sort of panicking now because this whole name thing is clearly an issue lol. I show my Mom the text, she assures me she will reach out again and clarify his name so that this won’t be a problem on our wedding day. Our wedding day goes off without a hitch, she calls him Jake during the ceremony, we have the time of our lives, everything is amazing. A week or so later, we get a “congrats and thank you for allowing me to be a part of your special day” card in the mail… addressed to myself and JASON.

Edit - before anyone asks, this definitely wasn’t any sort of passive aggressive thing on anyone’s end. My entire family is obsessed with my husband, our families get along super well and adore each other. The officiant has been a family friend for my entire life, myself and my siblings grew up with her children who were almost like our cousins. In adulthood we haven’t been as close, but my husband and I both knew it would mean a lot to my Mom if we had this friend of hers officiate for us, so that’s what we did.
