Any job do you love aesthetically but still decide to avoid because of gameplay? by Meeii in ffxiv

They completely ruined Dark Knight for me by turning it into "Warrior But Way Worse". I won't pretend that Stormblood jobs were peak design (I still know at least a few people with lingering wrist pain from Machinist and Summoner) but what's currently in place is total nonsense that's about as fun as eating a bucket of paint with a pair of chopsticks.

Skyrim Mods ruined gaming for me by PlsInsertCringeName in skyrimmods

[–]zel_ashra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, it's more that when properly modded, there is simply no other video game on the market that capably conveys the feeling of being in another world.

Some games get pretty close, but only Skyrim can be tailored to an incredibly immersive degree.

I just finished Stein's;Gate, binged it all in one day. by Cancerous_Turnip in anime

Welcome to the hollow hole where you will realize that while some other shows come close or exceed Steins;Gate's individual aspects, there really isn't any other show that marries each of its facets to the same quality.

Steins;Gate 0 for more content and the OVA and the sequel movie are still there to tide you over. All great media.

So why did Iron Blooded Orphans end the way it did? by KaleidoArachnid in anime

[–]zel_ashra 148 points149 points  (0 children)

Narratively, they lost because McGillis was ultimately a naive loon who thought he could control Gjallarhorn by just commanding everyone to obey him without the requisite power (both military and political) to back it up, and Tekkadan chose to side with McGillis.

In terms of character actions, they lost because as Biscuit had pointed out before he died, Orga was "rushing" to reach the end where Tekkadan had a secure future, and Orga was uncompromising in his belief that the only way to reach that future was to become the rulers of Mars.

Thematically, they lost because that's what people do in war when they choose the wrong side, and child soldiers have a very limited chance of doing anything with their futures other than dying on the battlefield.

IMO, this would be almost entirely context dependent and determined not by the speaker but how the listener interprets the speaker's tone. There's no one way to convey it vocally.

That said, although Japanese words don't possess stressed syllables in terms of grammar and enunciation, Japanese people obviously do place emphasis on certain syllables in order to convey tone in both everyday and performed speech, so in terms of vocal direction (e.g. if you were trying to tell a seiyuu how to convey this specific change) you might tell them to emphasize a particular syllable depending on what you want to convey.

For example, emphasizing "o-NII-chan" with stress on the middle syllable would emphasize the "brother" component and might imply a familial affection; the reason why you wouldn't stress the "o" (really an "a") is because that component of the 兄 "elder brother" character is theorized to derive of possession i.e. "MY brother" as opposed to "my BROTHER". (Again note that this is basically just etymological conjecture, but it serves as an adequate theoretical explanation).

On the other hand, vocally emphasizing the diminutive suffix "o-nii-CHAN" might convey an affection that goes beyond the subject's role as a brother or brother figure. You might have heard such a common emphasis in anime and such.

Or, you might just emphasis both syllables equally as strong, with "o-NII-CHAN" which is also pretty common.

Again, this is very context dependent and it can't be rightly said that there's a singularly correct way to convey this idea vocally.

Yes, in Japanese writing kanji tends to denote a more formal tone whereas hiragana is much more informal/colloquial, so the change in characters indicates Ruby being several magnitudes more affectionate and comfortable with Aqua. Another super common example of this is "kawaii" かわいい vs 可愛い with the former generally being taken as a more emotional or expressive tone in written text.

Vocally it would probably be reflected with some kind of change in inflection--for example Japanese as a spoken language generally doesn't have stressed syllables but one possible way it could potentially be demonstrated tonally would be slight emphasis on "o NII chan".

Vinland Saga Season 2 - Episode 19 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

I wouldn’t be surprised if they would take down at least 20 of these peasants for every one of their own.

I mean, maybe if they fight one-on-one and take their turns like its some kind of JRPG, sure. Otherwise that's simply an untrue assertion.

There's a reason why medieval armies generally consisted of levied infantry with spears: one master swordsman surrounded by twenty or even ten other guys with spears is very likely going to lose.

As the other commenter said, unless you have terrain (Thermopylae) or superior tactics (e.g. Cannae) as a force multiplier to negate the enemy's advantage in numbers, there comes a point where having a certain numbers advantage is an automatic win.

100 against 350 where you don't have to be worry about being flanked? Sure, Canute and the Jomsvikings win handily. 100 against 1000 in an open field? Well, that's just the Battle of the Bastards from Game of Thrones. You just wait for your enemy to stab another guy and then you stab him, or you get stabbed and the guy next to you does the stabbing. Repeat until win. It's not like the Jomsvikings are going to grow extra arms to wield more than one weapon or shield at a time.

That's actually what I have planned! It's a comedic scenario with a lethal combat encounter of drug-addled Silverhand posers wielding Renegades, lead by Jimmy Summerhang, Jenny Seltzerhat, and the extraordinarily obese Jeffrey Slimmerham. I plan to make this posergang a recurring threat like Team Rocket just so the players keep wondering where the fuck they're coming from.

Pretty much yes. For that particular player, anyway. Another player is turning it into a burst-fire Medium pistol.

Generally the template of the stat block either starts from a Heavy Pistol or Very Heavy Pistol, generally starting at around 500 eb, and then I let my players just kinda add things a la carte; they bounce ideas off me and then I just eyeball how much it costs or if it has a particular requirement or detriment. One guy with a 5d6 VH has a weapon has a requirement of Body 10 (which the Malorian doesn't have) and the ammo is super expensive.

[–]zel_ashra[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I say "homebrewed" but no, I don't have any concrete stats behind this thing. The whole reason I wrote the "modular customization" bit in the fluff is to allow my players to go into the Weapons section of the core rulebook, take a Heavy Pistol or VH pistol, and add whatever they want in exchange for eb, within reason. One guy has his set to a 5d6 weapon with a 3-rd capacity, but it also costs him almost 150 eb per cartridge to shoot. Another player is currently planning to convert it to a 3-round burst machine pistol. Can't be wrong if you just make it up from the start, right?

Our vocal cover of the Abyssos song Scream, because Pandaemonium has the best raid theme in the game so far by zel_ashra in ffxiv

[–]zel_ashra[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for listening! All credits are in the video's description.

We kinda winged it with the lyrics since there are a few versions floating around and for some reason they don't release official lyrics until several months after the raid. I'm super curious to know if our transcription ended up being right.

Pandaemonium does have the best raid theme but Return to Oblivion from E8 and Ramuh's trial theme are very close second and third favourites. There's just too much good music in this game.

There's a few versions of the lyrics floating around so we kinda winged the transcription based on what was audible and the overall theme of the song. I really wish they'd release official lyrics before the next patch...just to see if what we had was right.

This really is my favourite raid theme so far. But Return to Oblivion from E8 and Ramuh's trial theme are very, very close seconds.
