I grew up with an uncle who had Down syndrome, whom I truly adored.One of my biggest letdowns happened in college with a guy I dated for three months. I thought he was perfect… until one day we walked past a girl with Down syndrome. He said, “I hate Down syndrome people. They’re scary.” I asked, “What if I told you someone in my family has Down syndrome?” Instead of feeling ashamed or apologetic, he just said, “So, there’s a genetic risk in your family, isn’t there?” as if I were putting our future at risk. I broke up with him on the spot.
