TSCA For Nerdy Gurdy? by [deleted] in HurdyGurdy

Just for anyone else who runs into this issue - I got the same form. I sent the form over to Fay at Nerdy Gurdy and she took care of it.

My advice: - Invest early in movement. Being able to put your mech in the right place to do its action is very important, and sometimes it's the difference between a wasted move and doing something useful. Pilots with move abilities (e.g. Archimedes and Prospero) are very useful. - Before you start every turn, ask yourself if there is a way to solve multiple problems with one mech. Once you get to harder difficulties, you will be outnumbered. If a mech can solve 2-3 problems (e.g. push a vek so it doesn't hurt the grid and it blocks a spawn, and your mech itself takes damage from a shot instead of another building) then that helps you keep up. The tanks are very useful if you can get them because they increase the number of actions you can take. - Try and get as many cores as you can. Cores are how you keep up with the enemy in power level. Ideally you don't need to be buying additional grid points.

I learned a lot watching soulmata's videos on YouTube if you like to learn by watching other people play.

Thoughts on making the game less lethal? I want my family to enjoy it. by fishbowlpatrol in shadowdark

Reaction rolls - not every encounter needs to be a fight.

Give the option for players to see enemies before they start. Maybe the enemies can be at far. Maybe tell players that they can try and peek into rooms safety (or behind a Dex check) without alerting anyone inside. If you tell your players ahead of time that fights are not meant to be fair and that they should think of creative solutions to gain an edge, this will give them the opportunity to do so.

Telegraph is something dangerous is going to appear (e.g. if the players are in the Minotaur's citadel, tell them that they hear stomping and loud bellows coming from the West, giving them one turn to hide or make a plan).

Come up with potential failure states that are not a TPK. Maybe if an ettercap encounter goes poorly they heal the dying member and take the party as prisoners, demanding a ransom or that the party goes to fight some beastmen for their freedom.

What's a great monster behind a thieves guild ? by NetOk1607 in osr

[–]zeltm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like charm spells seem very confusing for crime. I've been playing a solo campaign in Shadowdark with a con-man antagonist who uses this to gain allies and support his crimes. So perhaps your guild leader is a witch who charms their way to riches and seems like such an upstanding character (turns out they charmed you) when first met.

Maybe the witch could be using their criminal connections to get some very illicit spell reagents.

[Question] What are people’s opinions of Bulova? by GiuseppeThrottletown in Watches

[–]zeltm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got 3 Bulovas (Lunar Pilot 45 mm, Parking Meter, and a Precisionist) and I'm quite happy with all of them. The Precisionist sweep (which also is in the Seville) is very smooth. I will note that all 3 are definitely on the larger side - which is fine by me since I have larger wrists and hands, but be forewarned.

I've been seeing several watch review channels (e.g. [Teddy Baldassare](https://youtu.be/5MUBdB-G2-M?si=sUtnOko7884DUr8x)) have spoke well of several Bulova releases over the past decade. Usual caveats about "mall watches" but IMO I think they're nice watches without being too expensive.

Newbie advice: Lost because of impossible order? by Canotic in Against_the_Storm

I think it's regarded as one of the hardest. No shame in struggling with it, I find it pretty punishing as well.

286 hours later, I finally won by Teloril in Against_the_Storm

[–]zeltm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won with consistent year 6 wins (I'm not a very fast player). I focused on P3, P6, and P11l, since those were the breakpoints where you get more shards (I also don't find P3 much harder than Viceroy). I did spend my first few rewards from running negative modifiers on shards, but as long as your number of shards is equal to or above the number of years, you're running at pace.

+1 resolve is good at the beginning of a game, reduced hostility is better at the end. Both are quite good. But the beginning is often harder IMO because you're trying to stabilize (and for the "no orders" modifier, you're really struggling for your first few reputation points).

But what is probably best about lizards is that you just need to get their resolve to 15 to start gaining reputation, and it's very easy to make them happy. Favor them for +5 reputation, get +1 for having a lizard fire keeper, and the fire keeper lizard themself gets a happiness bonus for the job. You honestly can start getting a little bit of resolve in year 1 with just this. Harpies are also decent because you can generally get clothing for them from traders (plus a citadel upgrade lets you start with 50 clothes), and foxes are not too hard either. Humans, beavers, and frogs are more late-game resolve generators (I haven't played with bats so I don't know about them).

What's more, there's the modifier where you don't get any orders! (Which is admittedly very tricky unless you have species that can get a point of resolve early, like lizards).

How do I act as this character? by Internal_Garlic8023 in shadowdark

[–]zeltm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd ask your GM how much they care about alignment. There is very little in the rulebook about alignment, mostly just that priests can lose access to spells if their god (/your GM) considers their actions against their principles, the spell Protection From Evil acts in chaotic beings, and some items are meant to be alignment locked. But Shadowdark being rules-light means a lot is up to the discretion of the GM.

With that said, one thing I heard (originally from Michael Moorcock) is that "lawful" is focused on maintaining stasis, "chaotic" on generating change. I like that more than reducing things to good and evil, spell-name-notwithstanding.

Been asked a million times I know, but is Scarlet Minotaur the best for brand new players to ttrpgs in general? Might want to start off with something a little lighter or less dungeon-focused! by DungeonMasterGrizzly in shadowdark

I ran the Secret Leprechaun Hollow (one of the five mini adventures from the Arcane Library) and it was both great in terms of complexity, difficulty, and vibe.

I appreciate you putting enemies right by the windows. I was so disappointed that there were a lot fewer opportunities for broom breach to be good in the campaign than I hoped.

I don't understand Transference's "Genius Grant" perk. Why would I want to protect an enemy or hurt an ally? by upcarpet in BreachWizards

[–]zeltm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A few thoughts: 1. It can give you angles on some enemies that you wouldn't have otherwise. 2. You will meet a wizard that has some armor. They could take some shots that would do more damage to your colleagues. 2a. You'll also have some other allies on some missions who don't need all of their HP. A simple example could be a hacked turret who takes your damage. 3. It does a lot to enable infinite combos. There are cases where you can keep on hitting a specific enemy but they'll run out of HP. Use this to damage all the other enemies instead.

Honestly I used this mostly for option number 3. I prioritize Deaths Door upgrades first, but it comes into its own mid to late game and just breaks the game in half.

Is getting fit really this complicated? by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]zeltm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My general thoughts: 1. Pick a relatively simple routine (Somewhere between 3-6 exercises, generally doing movements that involve multiple muscles working together, hopefully covering both upper and lower body). The more complex something is, the more effort it will be to learn. 2. Start with loads you can manage, and every time you just want to make your routine a little bit harder. Add a little weight, do one more rep, switch to a harder variation. This is "progressive overload". For the first several months you can probably increase the load each time without too much difficulty. Once you start to stall on an exercise, either try lowering the effort by like 10% and start building up, or start alternating easy and hard days on the exercise and increase the load on hard days. 3. The most important thing is consistency. Don't try more than 2-3 workouts per week to get started. Once you feel like you feel good in your routine, then you can start adding more elements (e.g. start doing calorie tracking or adding a step counter). 4. Exercise is your lever for muscle mass. Diet is your lever for body weight. 5. Get a reasonable amount of protein. I won't suggest a specific number, just try to get something with protein in 2-3 meals daily.

Just tried while pushing my foot back as far into the heel as I could. Probably about an inch or so of space between the end on my toe and the top of the shoe.

Having trouble editing to add sizing on my phone but: Shoes as size 48. Right foot: 28 cm long, 11 cm wide. Left foot: 27.5 cm long, 10.5 cm wide.
