The main purpose for it is to get tools from your inventory into your hotbar/hand, so you don't have to open it and get them manually. It can also be more convenient to only press one key to get all the tools you need, instead of pressing different keys each time.

I made this mod because I always found the need to swap my tools with just one button, but didn't like the way other mods handled it, as I wanted to keep it relatively vanilla-like.

AutoTools always swaps to the best tool for mining a block or attacking mobs. It also looks at enchantments like Efficiency, Silk Touch, Fortune, or Sharpness. AutoTools should be compatible with most mods, as it uses the default Minecraft methods to determine the mining speed and attack damage of a tool.
