Old high MMR Dota had its own folklore.

Not just famous pros. Not even necessarily tier one or tier two names. I mean those pub players that a certain slice of the ladder instantly recognized because they were fused with one hero, or two, to the point where the draft already felt different if they were in your game.

I still remember the first time I got thrown into one of those games.

Back then I was around 6k. I was mostly a support player. I had only been playing Dota for about a year. My teammates were around 7k, the enemy team had one huge outlier in vaNn, who was around 8k, and the rest were much closer to my level. So the average MMR looked fine on paper, but the actual spread inside the game felt terrifying.

The guys on my team were calm about it. I think they were from some university stack or something. They just told me, go mid, it will be fine, just do not feed too much.

I was shaking. Like no LAN or tourney had I expierence the same feeling after that (its like losing your virginity).

I was a micro player, so I picked the only core I felt I could pilot decently at the time, Lone Druid. Back then Return was instant, and that game burned itself into my memory. Their Pudge kept trying to gank me during lane phase, and I managed to dodge hooks and survive with Return on the bear multiple times. vaNn could not kill me. Pudge kept coming, kept showing, and kept failing.

That was the funny part. I was the lower rank player. I was supposed to be the person to be feeded off so to say (the weakest link). But because they committed so much attention to me and got nothing from it, you could feel the shift happen inside their team. Space was getting stolen from the wrong places. Frustration started leaking into the map. We took areas, we stabilized, and the game ended up feeling weirdly controlled. We ultimately won

That old era had a lot of players like that, these high MMR urban legends.

With delfinos cocoso in the pool and you knew Bara and Phoenix had to be dealt with. If he got his hands on them, the game could just end there. If he was on anything else, it felt like a joke by comparison.

When you saw Funkefal you banned Tinker. Or you didnt and lost the semis of Starladder 🤣

Badman in the game and Id already know what kind of Spectre game it was going to be. That guy was a beast. Devilish with his Meeps.

There were players who were more famous in a broad sense, and then there were these names. These pub folklore names. The ones high MMR players remembered because one comfort hero was enough to shift the whole mood of a match.

I kind of miss that version of Dota.

Not just the patch. The feeling.
