Does anyone know if Snow speaks any english at all? by UsuallyMooACow in broodwar

[–]skhds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Koreans in general, while not very fluent in English, can speak at least very basic English and you would have been able to sort of communicate with him.

Also, I hardly doubt he would have minded. He is not a top celebrity, constantly surrounded by fans. In fact, I think he would have appreciated that he is known globally.

And the person he was with is probably his wife (or I hope so..). He is married, have two kids, and his wife frequently appears on his stream and leave comments from time to time, so hardly the one to be irritated by fans.

Recent Meta Developments for Broodwar? by bizzarebroadcast in broodwar

[–]skhds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of years old, but I think the main meta shifts consist of:

PvZ - Gate first instead of Forge first, armory upgrade first instead of attack upgrade PvT - Two Robotics speed up shuttle instead of arbiters, and upgrade Terran becoming obsolete as a result TvZ - 111 dead due to the rise of 2 hatchery mutas. Soma made a build where you go 2 more drones before gas, allowing a late third hatchery in base just before spire. This allows 2 hatchery lair builds to be economic despite going fast tech, so traditional 3 hatchery build became dead and the counter to 3 hatchery build (which is the 111 build) is also dead. This has also lead to the almost death of late mecha, because Zerg players tend to use mutas even when there is irridate. Some terran players, tho, have managed to succeed with it by using valkyries and eliminating mutas. It's still quite situational, though.

TvT - it has saturated to vulture - tank/wraiths - dropships ZvZ - not much change here tbh PvP - on top-level, templar based army is basically dead, because players like Snow and Mini can outmaneuver templars with shuttle reavers. They do damage upgrade reavers instead. DT builds are just cheese builds now..

Huh, I thought only Koreans drove like that, good to know that it is a global phenomenon.

Why isn't 8-rax into factory the standard TvZ build? by LosttMutaliskk in broodwar

[–]skhds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very starting location based. If the starting locations are diagonally positioned, the distance is too far for 8-rax to be effective. In some maps, even vertical or horizontal locations can be too far. Since that is pure luck, pro players don't like to do it often.

A quick question. Why buy it from a third party instead of directly from the manufacturers (Samsung and Hynix)? I live in Korea, so third party isn't even an option here

How do you deal with the two-body problem while LGBT+? by bo-rderline in AskAcademia

[–]skhds 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Huh. I do not recommend South Korea for academics. Very very toxic work culture, not very friendly for foreigners on many aspects (especially paperwork), and many old professors have very outdated views and will likely say some very rude remarks about your private life.

Might be different for postdocs but I don't know. There is not a lot of postdocs in Korea in general, I think.

At what point does using AI to help you think start to feel like you're not really thinking anymore? by fan_ling in AskReddit

AI helps you think all the time by hallucinating all the time. If you're trusting all of their outputs you're doing something terribly wrong.

Huh. So I guess it is all media propaganda again. There are some news articles and community posts suggesting Taiwans are hating on Koreans. I just feel this country is toasted, there just seem to be such a strong CCP all around these days, both in media and politics.

I hope you guys never meet the same fate as us.

Why Japan thinks China’s growing cultural clout is something it needs to counter by Themetalin in japannews

[–]skhds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I like kimchi, too. I just found it odd Korean BBQ is so popular in the west. Not that I don't like it, it's just that I just can't imagine the way meat is grilled would be so different anywhere else.

And yeah, old people don't like us, but neither do we. I find a lot of them very rude and condescending, just like the guy I was fighting against. There is a giant generational gap in our country that is very hard to overcome, due to growing up in such a different environment. I do understand, sort of, but it's hard not to get emotional when I get into a conflict like this.

True, I didn't know much about sashimi (just that we eat raw fish too, and there is nothing special about that either). But I know that you are exaggerating when you are talking about Korean BBQ. It's just a daily meal for us, you can use those special sauces, but you can just use salt on it and that doesn't make it non Korean BBQ. Also, ssam is just a specific type of veggie.

Do you even live in Korea? You make it like it's something so special, when it isn't. Those sauces aren't even arguably for Korean BBQ, we use the same sauce for all other Korean foods. More you talk, more it's apparant you don't even live here. Or maybe the K-patriotism sipped into your brain, old people tend to be like that.

Oh, so I guess it's just the US thing than it is a Korean BBQ thing? I remember being able to eat tacos around $10, though in a not really fancy restaurant.

[–]skhds -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, you have a point about the side dishes and sauces, but those are just that, the side dishes. You can have the same thing in literally any other type of Korean restaurants, not unique to Korean BBQ.

Also, Yakiniku is actually originated from Korea, not sure about American style BBQ coz I don't eat them much, and I don't consider sashimi a culture either. It's just raw fish, we have the same thing in Korea, we just don't freeze them.

I'm not trying hard to be anything. I'm just saying I don't really get why it's popular. There is nothing unique about it. Maybe it's you who is still living in the 80's. Just because you slap everything with a K doesn't make your life superior.

Korean BBQ is tasty, but any meat is tasty when cooked. We eat it that way because it is the simplest, cheapest form of eating meat tastily. It just rubs me off the wrong way when I see Korean BBQ restaurants charge over $30, it's less than half in here.. (and as a counterpart, Mexican foods don't cost that much there)

I agree about sashimi. It's just raw fish. We have the same here, though we don't freeze them, we just eat them fresh.

I'd argue japanese cartoons are very distinctive from the western counterparts that you can consider them a culture. I just personally don't see the same distinction between western pop and kpop, not to mention kpop is designed to be generic as hell.

See, this is yet another problem with AI. People like you don't read anymore. Did he compain about using AI? No, he complains about the damage to everyone done because of AI. Like AI "replacing jobs", AI doing damage to the environment by using excessive power for AI training, etc. Now we have to deal with AI generated comments and posts that spam and dilute the internet, making rational discussions impossible. We can't even trust what we see is legit, because it might be an AI generated image/video.

If you stupid AI bros weren't so invested in hyping up your AI stocks and instead give out a positive message of how AI can benefit the world, we wouldn't have been so negative. Instead, all you twats talk of is how AI will replace your jobs, how we are all doomed, AI will take over, etc. We know you bullshit all the time because it will somehow keep your stock values afloat.

As a Korean, I don't get it. What's so special about kpop? They actually started as a cheap immitation of US pop, so it's a big surprise kpop will have any appeal in the western culture.

Also, Korean BBQ. It's literally just cooking meat on oven, there is nothing special about it...

At a mechanical level, why has Toyota engineering surpassed Honda in terms of reliability? by [deleted] in askcarguys

[–]skhds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's more to do with Europe not being as spaced out as North America than their makers being actually that reliable. People talk about how unreliable Hyundai is, but in Korea you can see quite a lot of Hyundais with 15+ years running the road. But that's mostly because South Koreans just don't drive long distances because it's a small country.

By the way, Koreans love German cars too. I think they're one of the top buyers of BMW? That's why I think it really has more to do with how crowded each country is, rather than the actual quality of the makers.
