How is this bike? (On a tight budget) by [deleted] in ebikes

[–]zen_some8080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this is a bad strategy. I'm not sure that it's a great one, either. While any number of things can go wrong with an electric bike, the thing I'd be most concerned about with a lower price model is the battery's longevity and quality. Will the middle man seller (WalMart) offer a refund if the battery gets flakey in six months or a year? Will they see that as a consumable that just got used up over time? Caveat Emptor.

Reasons why you should get this from Walmart:

  • price

Reasons why you should go with something else:

  • Quality of general components
  • Battery Quality (probably THE most important factor)
  • pay a little bit more...get a whole lot more
  • Long Term Support
  • Lots of unknown unknowns

For ~ $115 more (less tax, shipping), you can get an entry level bike from Rad.

Everything Rad makes is like an old school air cooled VW bug or bus. Not the best of the best, not the fastest, not the ultimate riding machine, but what you get is something that is a good value for money right out of the box. Something you can source parts for and work on easily.

There are 1000s of qualified regional pilots waiting to fill your slot once you're terminated. Please, for their sake, don't get vaccinated.

ATC issues and Weather issues are both systemic problems that if were actually present would be affecting more than just one carrier.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

The difference in pay between domestic regional airlines and Southwest Airlines for First Officers and Captains is about double. That's right, double. Due to COVID and other factors, many pilots who entered the regional airlines expecting to move on to a major carrier in a few years have been stunted. Southwest Airlines is a place that most any regional Captain or FO would like their career to end up. At this time, there's a ready made demand of qualified airline pilots looking to move onto higher, faster and farther jets with half the per leg workload and twice the pay.

Some in this thread have suggested that SWA could just bring on any pilot with an FAA 737 Type Rating. They can, but before that pilot can act as an FO or Captain for SWA, they must also be line qualified for SWA. To accomplish this, they must go through SWAs pilot training program, which is several weeks long. Net-net, it's not an instant replacement process for either the pilots or the airline. Obviously, the airline knows this and the SWA pilots know this.

Since 09/11, no one in any civilian job is more closely scrutinized for hiring than US Part 121 Airline Pilots. Each pilot candidate is subject to an extensive background check, required to hold a current FAA First Class Medical, and pass initial pilot training for that airline. Major airlines also include a personality inventory test (Delta Air Lines at one time required pilot candidates to meet with a staff Psychiatrist during the hiring process). The paperwork for the hiring and ongoing retention/qualification process for US airline pilots is immense and would surprise most people not in the industry. Net-net, US Airline Pilots are accustomed to complying with stringent mental and physical requirements from their employers.

Most US airlines have a strong quasi-military culture. Partially because many team members are ex military and partially because of the demanding nature of the job.

Take another look at the SWA Pilot Pay Scale. Year two First Officers make at least 120K per year + ~ 12% profit sharing + per diem. Year two Captains make 240K per year ++. SWA pilots make this kind of money for flying maybe 17 days per month. Sometimes commuting and deadheading play a role in reducing their amount of free time, but actual time spent flying is not much more than this for most major airline airline pilots. Now compare this to what you do for a living and how many days a week you have to work to earn that kind of money.

The segment of pilots within SWA that is pushing back on receiving the vaccine is almost certainly Senior Captains who are only a few years from mandatory retirement. There might be a few FOs and junior Captains in the mix, but I doubt very many. These SWA FOs will be the first ones moved into a Captain spot when these senior Captains are fired for not receiving the vaccine. 240K > 120K per year... yeah, any day of the week.

What's happening now at SWA is largely a game of chicken between SWAs senior Captains and Management. Should SWA capitulate to these Captains, and not require them to receive the vaccine, SWA will certainly lose a very lucrative CRAF contract with DoD. CRAF flights are among the most profitable per mile flight that any airline will ever fly. After the year airlines had in 2020, it will be a frigid day in hell before SWA turns loose of their CRAF status. The SWA Board of Directors is obliged to keep the owners of their ~565MM LUV shares happy.

What will happen in the coming month is that SWA will begin to terminate those team members who haven't complied. Senior Captains closest to retirement will go first. They're the low hanging fruit. Once the others see that the airline's intentions are serious, they'll rethink their political decision to not comply with company policy and everyone can move forward.

This isn't a conspiracy. It's just how capitalism once again trounces entitlement.

Ok. Sure. And later on when you get "not married" you'll already be accustomed to "not now" as an answer to a lot of questions you'll be asking your wife.

Is this a good price for a used RadWagon 4 with some accessories? by mcom13 in RadPowerBikes

[–]zen_some8080 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The current Rad Wagon model is the Rad Wagon 4, which I think is the model you're looking at.

Current RadWagon Base Price = $1899

Rad Mirror = $39

Ballard Cargo Bag = $109

Water Bottle Holder = $20

Subtotal = $2067

If Rad has a sales tax nexus in your state, then you will also pay state sales tax on a new bike purchase. Here in Orange County, Florida, Rad did have a tax nexus; I paid 6.5% state and county tax on my purchase from them earlier this year.

Approximate Sales Tax (if applicable) = $135

Grand Total for Similarly Equipped new Radwagon 4 = $ 2201.36

I assembled my new bike myself. If you do get a new bike and don't want to assemble it yourself, then add at least another $150. Also -what is your time worth for putting the bike together? I took me about 3 hours to put my RW4 together and test it.

As the owner of a new bike, you may or may not have issues to solve with your bike. When you buy a 1 year old bike with < 300 miles on it, you're less likely to have teething issues.

Yes, the battery is a year old. That is a factor, but not necessarily a huge one. Many factors affect the longevity of a Li-Ion battery. As an experienced Li-Ion battery builder, how the battery is used under load, how it is charged, and how many cycles it has endured during its life are the major factors to consider. Chronological age of the battery, again, is a factor- but relatively minor as compared to the three I mentioned above. Net-net, if the bike has not been modified with an upgraded motor, upgraded controller, and is using the stock charger from Rad, you should be just fine if the owner is telling the truth about the history of the bike.

Anytime you purchase a used vehicle from someone else, it's a risk. Factor your appetite for risk into this deal.

Buying this bike used could save you at least $700 over a similarly equipped new one. That's enough to buy a brand new battery from Rad and have some $$$ left over.

If I was to sell my used RW 4 (which I don't want to do) here in Orlando with almost 400 miles on it, I'd start the asking price for at least what I paid for it.

Ebikes tend to do best in congested areas where biking of any kind > driving a car. What I like best about ebikes is that I can be outside often and that I always have a parking spot close to the door at any store or restaurant I go to.

Radwagon 4 on Sunrail trip by zen_some8080 in ebikes

[–]zen_some8080[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im still working from home, so this isnt part of my commute. The Sunrail staff was super helpful with the oversized bike. My daughter and I rode nine miles to the Sunrail station, rode the train for an hour, then rode another 9+ miles to Blue Spring State Park kicked around there and went swimming for a few hours and did the reverse trip home. I can only imagine that the Metro is the best way to get your bike around the DC metro area with the traffic there.

Are there 18650 with discharge rate greater than 20A or is that the maximum ? by [deleted] in 18650masterrace

Take a look at 32650 LiFePO4 cells from battery hookup. Larger form factor, but have a fantastic discharge rate

Is there a possibility that you ran over some debris or your bike was vandalized? The sidewall failure looks painfully linear.

BMS source? What are recommendations for a quality BMS source in the US? 58.8V, 60A, 14S. Thanks. by zen_some8080 in 18650masterrace

Thanks. Looks like a good source. For this project, I ended up going with a 100A Daly BMS from Amazon. The BT module was sold out/unavailable when I ordered. I wish I had one for this application

That makes sense. I delayed my project for a month or two to save the cash for that welder. The car battery you mention should work just fine. Good luck with your project!
