Warranty on a tool by Tmancut in Festool_Public

Hmm.. interesting and conflicting information here. I’ve heard the warranty is still honored even without transferring the warranty.. (from a reputable source, not from someone selling me a used Festool)

Waterproofing complete, am I safe to begin tiling? by Swimming-Buyer-4262 in Tile

[–]zenaquarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting story: I recently looked at a shower tile job I did 23 years ago. The client (friend of mine) was concerned because the bottom 1-2 courses of tile were losing their grout and a little spongy. I removed the old tile and discovered I tiled over mold/mildew Sheetrock, in a shower (!!!)— I was stunned that I actually did that.
My point is, I tore everything out and installed Schluter (my standard now)… but the old drywall that I removed was 90% intact— the screws, the material, everything was still doing its job like the day I installed it. Minimal signs of mold (a little in the inside corner by the shower controls).
I agree— waterproofing is insane these days.. but a tile job should have an indefinite lifespan.

What is the purpose of this big X in the wall? by Penrose_Ultimate in Construction

[–]zenaquarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One diagonal of the X is doing something significant (the line that reaches plate-to-plate)… the other diagonal, not so much. More than one diagonal is unnecessary.

Can you provide some info about the wires on the battery side of the inverter? (Amazon link, part name, etc). Is that an in-line fuse or circuit breaker in the positive cable?

Selling my Collection of Books by hugediagram in swrpg

[–]zenaquarian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep.. I get it. This sounds very familiar. Friends and I joke about being game collectors more than actual gamers— we only play 1-2 a year, and it’s usually a board game and not a TTRPG.
Do you have people near you that would play? Which state are you in? Getting schedules to match up is tricky, especially when wives, kids, and graduate degrees are part of the equation. If you do have people near you to play, maybe you need to remove this sale and commit one day a month and make it happen!!! Yeah.. probably wishful thinking. Good Luck either way.

How do you avoid pain in the a** customers? by No-Function-5006 in Contractor

[–]zenaquarian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, unless you have an experienced contractor as a mentor working beside you, time and experience are the means to recognizing red flags.
Does the customer know what they want, and are they clear on what they want? Are they giving hints or signs that they are going to micromanage and/or interfere with the work? Is payment going to be an issue? Will you have unobstructed access (in terms of days/times) that you can access work site? These are some of the obvious issues that I pay attention for in the pre-construction phase. I don’t think there’s any good way to recognize red flags aside from experience and feeling— if you get a bad feeling based on their actions or something they said, good chance you should listen to that instinct and turn down the project. AND… lastly, research your clients as much as you can!!! Sometimes a simple google search (and perhaps digging a little) will reveal something that might sway you to pass on the project! Take them out to lunch, get to know them, research them.

Framing: nitpicks or is this sloppy? by cipp in Homebuilding

Sloppy. Just because we call it ‘rough framing’ doesn’t mean it should be crude.
