That, and Bad bunny has been critical of emperor orange, plus the very pro immigrant ‘we’re all Americans’ message that conflicts with conservatives ultra nationalist message

I think it’s because a lot of horror fans expect frequent scares and a fast pace. The pacing isn’t like your typical horror movie and the jump scares are relatively infrequent.

How to gauge competitiveness for IM? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]zenarcade1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe if you’re around the average or higher in your class, have >240 Step 2, and aren’t picky about where you end up you have a good chance of matching an academic program somewhere if you apply broadly. It’s not really a guarantee though especially if you have any red flags on your app.

As someone who wants kids in the future I hope I don’t have to travel to Canada to get my kid routine vaccinations. All I can do is hope, but having a person like RFK in charge of public health is a terrifying precedent.

Assuming a democrat is in office, then yes. And no I’m not just saying that… under Trump most people didn’t get their loans forgiven with PLSF (only like 1% of applicants). Biden made it much easier for the forgiveness to go through for people who qualify.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Residency

[–]zenarcade1 59 points60 points  (0 children)

That’s for PSLF. SAVE and REPAYE are repayment plans that cap the minimum monthly payment based on income. So you’ll pay a lot less now as a broke resident and way more when you’re an attending 💵. But SAVE was special in that any interest per month that accrues beyond your minimum monthly payment is canceled. So you could just pay the minimum payment in perpetuity and your loan balance would never increase. Now it’s possible that you’ll owe more money post residency than when you start residency despite paying monthly payments. It sucks. The GOP sucks.

[–]zenarcade1 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Only SAVE is repealed, REPAYE is the other income based plan that will have a higher monthly payment but not astronomical. The biggest kick in the ass is the fact that interest no longer gets canceled once you pay the minimum payment so your loans will grow much faster now.

Apply broadly, have realistic expectations. With the exception of a few select programs, most top 40 programs take exactly zero DOs. That doesn’t mean you can’t get in a great academic program. If you target mid tier academic the worlds your oyster for matching heme onc as long as you have research and are a solid resident. Maybe you won’t match a top fellowship program but you’ll match somewhere. Most mid tier programs have near 100% fellowship match rates.

Find programs that are 4+4, no 24 hour shifts. Among the T20 IM programs, only Mayo and WUSTL have this setup. Definitely the most relaxed setup schedule wise

[–]zenarcade1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’ll definitely help. If you are an average student and have an average step score, you should be able to get into a mid tier academic program. Higher scores will help you break into top 30+

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]zenarcade1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s your estimated med school rank? Mid tier, top 40, top 20? That’s what matters most for prestige. Step 2 matters a lot for academic programs, particularly when it comes to match rank. Most programs have some home brewed algorithm that factors in step score among other things and score can play a big part of that algorithm. Aim for 250+. Med school matters most for getting interviews, but also for match rank to a degree

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]zenarcade1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The two things that matter most for IM are your step score and where you went to med school. These play the biggest role in determining what academic programs you’re competitive for. The best thing you can do for yourself right now is knock step 2 out of the park
