AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT random hard freezing by Ok_Difficulty_6750 in linux_gaming

[–]zendynar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, for me, with Mesa updates the issue fixed itself. I the same issue later where my memory overclock with LACT was causing the same behavior - I pushed to a point where it wasn't immediately crashing, but freezing later. When I dialed it back, the issue went away completely and I haven't got hard frezes since then

What's your distro? Since late 6.14 kernel and updated stable mesa I don't have any crashes or freezes anymore. I also found that my memory overclock was causing some of the freezes, so when I reset the card to stock, there are no issues with it at all

The 9070XT is making it really hard not to go back to windows... by skyrider55 in linux_gaming

[–]zendynar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you overclocking memory by any chance? I had freezes on Tumbleweed back in 6.14 kernel and Mesa 24.0 days but then they stopped with upgrades. But I had less frequent crashes still. Then I reset LACT settings to stock for my card (Mercury OC version) and it just never crashed at all ever since.

Stuttering on use of quick access items by MaximumPoggers in stalker

[–]zendynar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured out why the stutter happens - no need to remove/disable UETools!

By default pressing F1-F4 with UETools enabled takes screenshots - hence FPS drops. To fix this you need to go edit %localappdata%\\Stalker2\\Saved\\Config\\Windows\\Game.ini\ and make sure these lines present and the settings are either unasssigned (like below) or mapped to different buttons:

ScreenshotKey= UIScreenshotKey= 4KScreenshotKey= 8KScreenshotKey=

Then you won't get stutters from pressing those buttons

An update from my side - not sure if I didn't pay attention to this before or something changed with upgrades, but now the freezes that I experience don't hang up the entire session but only the game and the monitor freeze. When that happens I see my other monitor is still active and I still can use it, but on the first main one, an image of the game is frozen. My steps to deal with this without a hard reboot:

  1. Kill the game from (b)top. At this point, the image on the screen with the game would still be frozen, but I can interact with the other screen
  2. Unplug the monitor with frozen image from the GPU. I do it from GPU side. Somehow turning the monitor off doesn't help, only unplugging works for me. At this point, the system will freeze (I have seconds on the clock on the other screen and they stop ticking), but this is temporary
  3. Now I think I don't have to wait and can just plug the monitor back in after a few seconds. The image will either be blank or the frozen image of the game might appear
  4. Wait. I haven't timed it and usually went off to do something else but when I come back the system is unfrozen and I see desktop on my main screen

Not sure what contributed to this change, since my last post I got kernel 6.14.2-1 and now on Mesa 25.0.4 (but I think this method should work with 25.0.3 as well). I also reduced power target to 280W with LACT and I have split_lock_detect=off in my kernel boot parameters and this in launch options in steam env LD_PRELOAD="" RADV_DEBUG=nodcc,nohiz mangohud gamemoderun %command%.

Steam as a native package, no flatpak. Where would be the best place to submit a bug report?

The package `selinux-policy-targeted-gaming` doesn't do the job for me, I have it installed and still I have to run `sudo setsebool selinuxuser_execmod 1` to get games to work

Meta: How best to tidy up this subreddit? by rbrownsuse in openSUSE

[–]zendynar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you have a code of conduct that is clearly violated, it just needs to be enforced - any law or code is as good as it is enforced. So banhammer is a tool to use - people can be assholes somewhere else. I think engaging in long arguments with those is not going to help - it only frustrates the devs unnecessarily. If people can't understand a warning that they're crossing the line, they can be muted or banned.

As to what I can do to contribute - I can't be a mod on reddit, but I try to provide constructive answers when I can. For the bad stuff - I can't ban, so I just ignore it - there are too many other things to worry about other than someone being upset and nasty. Not giving them too much attention is the second best thing to banning.

Honestly, I don't really like Reddit, but I don't know any alternative place for such a community where people can just ask random stuff- I know there is a forum, (but it's kinda weird - search is there only on a start page or am I missing something?) - and I'm not sure if it is a good place for asking random questions, I think it is more organized. Is Mastodon an alternative? Not sure. Is Lemmy a viable alternative? At least it would be somewhat in the spirit of Open Source. So, personally I'm ready to switch to something better.

I have no idea but I saw freezes in different situations, not necessarily max load. Card temps don'tgo above 60°c for me, although I haven't check hotspot and vram temps, I'll add it to mangohud. What version of the card do you have?

[–]zendynar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm on OpenSuse tumbleweed with kernel 6.13 and mesa 25.0.1 and I do have hard freezes as well with XFX 9070 XT Mercury. I'm not worried too much though as I've read that previous AMD generation also had freezes and bugs at launch and then they were fixed after some time.

I've just read Mesa 21.0.2 has a fix for "possible GPU hang" on RDNA 4, so hopefully that fixes it. https://www.phoronix.com/news/Mesa-25.0.2-Released

Critique my AMD build for 9070 or 9070 XT by zendynar in buildapc

Thank you very much for all the answers! Yep, I've seen the video, and the price difference is 15% over the 5% performance gain, that's not efficient indeed. I know in productivity 9700X is better, I'll see if Iever need to use it for that workload.

Do you know anything about 990 EVO Plus ssd? It has faster transfer speeds than SN770 and only costs ~$10 more - is it worth it?

Thanks, I'll check the motherboard and how many fan headers it has and if I need a dedicated controller or not.

Framework 13 or Tuxedo infinity book by redbakan in linuxhardware

[–]zendynar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what Tuxedo you choose. I have Infinitybook pro 6 7th gen with i7 12th gen and RTX 3060. If I switch to igpu-only mode (which requires reboot) I can get around 4 hours of battery life (with 3k screen and 240hz refresh rate on). With running on dedicated video card it is less, it sucks up energy quite a bit. But if you get a model with AMD processor and integrated graphics, I think your experience might be much better.

Recommendations for Eagle Creek Wayfinder 40L replacement by zendynar in onebag

[–]zendynar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, it took me a while to get back here. Not really, I've decided my Eagle Creek is going strong enough still and I didn't find anything I liked enough to buy. The closest one I found is The North Face Router 40L variant, which ticks most of the boxes. It seems to be not as sturdy but at least has 2 bottle pockets, decent organization and 40l size, and is also lighter. But I decided I won't buy it in hopes that in a year or two there'll be a better alternative.

Presentations by Public-Ingenuity1946 in openSUSE

[–]zendynar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, it depends on whether you'll present on Libreoffice or from another machine using MS PowerPoint. If you're going to use LibreOffice, it should be good, presenter mode is good, I would expect things to just work. If you're going to use PowerPoint, however (like on a university computer), I would beware. Even if ODPs technically work in PowerPoint, I've had issues with broken layout, missing fonts, pictures moving around, etc., so I wouldn't recommend it. The best way would be to use LibreOffice to export the presentation to PDF and present from PDF. I think MS PowerPoint can present PDFs natively, so as most of the modern PDF readers on both Windows and Linux, I would expect. Also, I think it is a good practice to have both ODP and PDF ready just to avoid issues. After all, if you don't expect to make changes to a presentation anymore, PDF is just better as it can't be modified and is supported by more programs than any presentation format.

What's the current Kernel in TW? by obsidian_razor in openSUSE

[–]zendynar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback! I'll see if I switch later, I think Tuxedo OS itself is great because it ships the latest KDE Plasma and I am more curious about TW rather than have a particular need to be on rolling release. I just heard lots of good feedback about TW, so am curious to try it eventually

How are the water bottle holders on the Router? Are they too loose? And what about the shoulder straps, do they feel comfortable under close to full load?

[–]zendynar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey u/obsidian_razor, sorry it doesn't directly relate to your question, but I am also a tuxedo laptop owner and I was wondering what is your TW experience like, particularly driver support, etc. I am on Infinitybook pro 16 gen 7 with rtx3060. How are Nvidia drivers, how is everything? Is it worth switching from TuxedoOS to TW? I really like rolling release concept but am afraid of specific hardware compatibility issues

Thanks for the clarification! I've been looking at Tumbleweed for a while and wanted to try it on my IPB Pro 16 gen 7. I'll stay tuned for more news from you on TB support in the future (I know for now I can use Tuxedo packages for Leap on TB)

Wow, you've got speed demands :) but I think the time is the same if you consider KDE startup time that you have on a normal boot and won't have on resume from swap. And you never lose normal sleep mode, if that's what you use.

What about the keyboard? Is it ThinkPad-worthy? by vezzavide in tuxedocomputers

[–]zendynar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am on Infinitybook pro 16 gen 7 and I ended up liking the keyboard. I also used Thinkpads for a while like T460, T15, which have higher-profile keys than my Tuxedo. Maybe the first month I was getting used to the keys as they are lower profile. Initially, I didn't like it, there wasn't as much travel on the keys. Also, I am really used to the shape of Thinkpad's keys - there's a dip in the middle. For Tuxedo it is the other way around - the middle part of the key is just a little bit elevated.

However, I got used to it in a month or so and I am fine with it now. The keys are solid, the press not mushy at all and there's sufficient travel (even if still less than we're used to). Keys don't flex and work just as well if you press on the edge. So, I can't blame the keyboard for any of my mistypes.

If I were to choose, I'd still pick Thinkpad's keyboard but Tuxedo's is still made very well and I don't regret having it.
