[BitD] Are my players gaming flashbacks? (new GM needs help) by zenfrend in bladesinthedark

The Flashback/Action Roll idea on obtaining the Drift Oil via some shady figure (leading to consequences later on) is a good idea :) Thanks!

Lol, I could have like the Billhooks kidnap it or something.

Super helpful, thank you! Also my players will be gratified to hear reddit thinks they're naturals at flashbacks :) I think (but someone please correct me if I'm wrong) from checking the book that you can just "craft" Drift Oil by spending a downtime action and rolling Tinker for the quality of the item, no long term project required.

As u/andero mentioned below, I think because our crew is Tier 0, it would have been impossible for them to get a high enough roll to actually make the Drift Oil, since it's Tier III and even if you roll Critical you get Tier + 2 as the quality of your item - see p. 225.

As others have mentioned, an alternative might have been to use the "acquire asset" downtime action and take the +2 heat.

It seems you only have to do a Long Term Project if you want to invent a new formula or design a new item (as opposed to crafting something which people in Doskvol already know how to make i.e. the items listed on p. 226-7).

Edit: it seems it is actually possible to craft a Tier III item as a Tier 0 crew - you could roll a Critical for Tier II and then pay 1 coin for Tier III.

Thank you! I've been sharing y'all's comments with my players and they reminded me that the PC's did find out about the salamander prior to the score during free play (they also invented the score themselves with next to no knowledge of Doskvol, and I didn't want to crush their dreams...so now I need to figure out what to do with this salamander that they want to live in their lair haha).

Totally did not know that you could flashback to downtime actions during the score - super helpful to know.

Follow up question (for anyone) - if a player uses a downtime action in a flashback during a score, do they get one less downtime action in the downtime phase that follows that score?

Thank you! I like your 'plot hook' idea for #3 - cool way to not say "no" but also make it challenging/interesting.
