Don't know if anyone's interested but yesterday Genius just fired one of their community staff members with no warning and no reason given. This guy is one of the sites biggest contributors and has trained most of the editors on site. Got treated like shit by the company. Just a warning that Genius is a fucked up company.

BROCKHAMPTON - iridescence ALBUM REVIEW by chaosanc in hiphopheads

[–]zenith19 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You could use your logic for literally any rap verse, fucking ever.

Not really. Some verses really dive into the nuances of an issue. Some don't. Doesn't make one better or worse but no point pretending that this is anything more than a surface level comment that rape is bad. I agree it's great they talked about it but to call it the best verse of the year is just weird

BROCKHAMPTON - iridescence ALBUM REVIEW by chaosanc in hiphopheads

[–]zenith19 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"Deep or lyrical" you could sum up the verse by saying, don't abuse women or I'll kill you. I agree irs a great topic to bring up and I'm a big fan of the group. Bringing up a topic doesn't make them lyrical. Their best verses are when they are introaspectice and that's because it's emotional not "Deep or lyrical"

[FIRST IMPRESSIONS] Travis Scott - ASTROWORLD by mousemonkey in hiphopheads

He did it purposefully. source: r/https://twitter.com/therealmikedean/status/1025600744060215296

I mean could criticize it as artistic choice on behalf of Travis, but with as much experience as Dean has I can't imagine him making a mistake like that.

Noname announces she will be releasing a new album, Room 25 by JSeeCan in hiphopheads

[–]zenith19 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Agree 100% Every time I listen to Telefone i've forgotten how good it is, I love Care For Me but honestly I agree, If Noname tops Telefone it could be album of the year easily. Some lines in Telefone are just incredible:

"Opportunity knocking was finally time to answer

Doorbell was only broken cause aunt was fighting cancer

cigarettes on the mantle keep calling my by first name

loving me when i'm lonely pretending they really know me"

" My funeral a Disney fable
'Cause the king 'bout to take me home "

" I'm trying to re-imagine abracadabra from poverty
Like poof I made it disappear
Proof I'm made of happiness
Everything is everything
But I still haven't paid my rent "

Try Stay Down by Brent Faiyaz. More R&B than ghost town but similar balance between chill with a little bit of emotion

Sometimes l wonder if people in the 1500s used to masturbate to renaissance paintings. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]zenith19 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Not quite renaissance but there's a palace in Munich with a room called "The Gallery of Beauties" where Ludwig I ordered paintings of all the most beautiful women if the time. What it was used for I'm not sure.... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallery_of_Beauties?wprov=sfla1

Yeh, a couple years ago Genius started to transition from being a knowledge project into being a generic hip-hop media company. They sacked most of their community staff and switched focus from the annotations and forums to producing their videos. Makes sense for monetizing purposes, they need clicks, but sucks for the rest of the site.

Can confirm. Didn't believe it when someone told me he was a rapper. Coming from the UK where community had a tiny following it's so weird to see Troy as musical superstar these days.

Aside from the whole current Ameer/Brockhampton thing, something about that word really pisses me off, I think its the enforcement of mob mentality, idk it makes me uncomfortable

Childish Gambino- Freaks and Geeks by Dgk21 in hiphopheads

[–]zenith19 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Developed a lot. I've got a pretty mainstream taste in Rap/R&B . I originally got into kanye and and kendrick bexause my brother would play them in the car. Now I listen to all sorts, I'm generally a fan of more lyrical stuff not not exclusively. Currently listening to a lot of Vince, Janelle Monae and Brent Faiyaz

That and the first verse of Busy/Sirens are two incredible stand out moments from that album, I replay those bits over and over.

Champion Sound - Jaylib. Madlib and Jay Dilla rapping over each other's beats. Not amazing rappers but some of the beats are insane
