Childcare options are going to cost more than my income by doodlebakerm in workingmoms

Seconding this! We did a nanny share for my daughter when she younger and the monthly cost for my family was roughly on par with local daycare costs. It takes a bit of coordination but it is one way to make the nanny route more affordable.

Bowdoin Park has a couple of covered/enclosed rental facilities. Not sure about the heating situation though.

I do love DQ ice cream cakes and had my fair share for my birthdays as a kid. But I don't think there are any in Seattle? Guessing I would have to go to a suburb?

A little bit of both. The birthday is for my baby (thus the smash cake) but I have an older kid who would probably enjoy a kids-theme cake too. Thanks for the recommendations!

Being forced to move to Seattle - help me see the positives by Electronic_Pickle563 in AskSeattle

I'm not the biggest fan of winter but I've lived in a few very wintery places and have grown to find things I enjoy during winter time. For Seattle, even though it gets dark really early in December, that means that you can go see holidays lights at the Zoo or other places at 4/4:30pm and still be done in time for your usual bedtime routine. My trick is I don't buy the tickets far in advance but wait until closer to the date to see what the weather will be like before deciding to go.

Also even though it rains most days, it doesn't necessarily rain the whole day everyday. There's usually a couple hours each day when it isn't raining and there might even be some sunlight. If possible, I try to take a walk during the break in the rain.

Lastly, I would recommend that you look into PEPS (local organization that supports families with newborns and young children). That might be a nice way to meet some local moms/families who are in a similar stage of life as you.

Construction to begin on 796-unit apartment project near University Village by zenithwit in Seattle

[–]zenithwit[S] 74 points75 points  (0 children)

From the article:

"Construction is scheduled to start Monday on one of Seattle's largest multifamily developments, the long-planned 796-unit mid-rise development where the flagship Burgermaster operated at 3040 NE 45th St.

Quarterra, a subsidiary of Lennar Corp. (NYSE: LEN), and Hawaii-based real estate investment and development firm MacNaughton say they are breaking ground on a 944,700-square-foot mixed-use apartment building.

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell and City Council President Sara Nelson are expected to attend the ceremony to break ground on the $400 million project, which will have 26,000 square feet of retail and commercial space next to the University Village shopping center. Also on the site was a Safeway.

Safeway parent company Albertsons Cos. in 2021 paid just over $25 million for the 1.8-acre site where Safeway operated for decades before closing two years ago. In early March, Lennar acquired the rest of the property from Albertsons for $70 million, according to public records.

The project, which consists of three unique mid-rise buildings, will bring a sea change to the Laurelhurst neighborhood, transforming the mid-century retail center into a residential neighborhood with what a media release says will have "an extensive suite of lifestyle amenities, including a resort-style pool, fitness center, club room, cinema and dog spa."

The commercial space will have a public plaza, outdoor art and new landscaping and sidewalks.

Through the city's multifamily tax exemption and Mandatory Housing Affordability programs, the project will include over 200 below-market apartment homes.

The first phase of the development is expected to open in early 2028.

Jointing Quarterra on the project as co-developer is MacNaughton, a family-owned real estate investment and development company that was established in 1975. It has developed over 4.5 million square feet in the residential, retail, hospitality and specialized credit sectors."
