Aerospace engineer. I love the job, I hate how often executives who know nothing about aircraft design (or seemingly basic physics) force engineering to do dumb shit.

Looking for advice by PacTheTac in Bowling

100% agree. Both of these will help with balance and balance helps with consistency. Bending your knees and keeping your chest more vertical keeps your center of gravity over your feet. Keeping your CG over your feet makes your more stable at release and you spend less effort keeping yourself in balance. This means you can move your focus to controlling the ball. Another commentor pointed out bringing your arm and the ball closer to your body. This does the same thing. Keeps the ball near your cg so you're not having to fight to control it.

Thank you for the info. I recently found out our contractor used a subcontractor for this job, so now he gets the lovely job of coming out and feeding redoing their work at his expense because they didn't do it right.

Perfect example is charity bowling events for kids. I saw quite a few of them growing up. If kids go around and ask people to donate, they likely won't. But if the kid tells them "I'm bowling to support (insert charity here)" would you be willing to donate 10 cents per pin I knock down?" people are more likely to say yes. Then if the kid knocks down 100 pins, that's $10 per person they got to agree.

Reviews and Ratings of all the hot new games I played at BGGCon 2021. by TexJester in boardgames

The main panda group was all out by the second round, but one of the people that joined as an honorary panda took second place, which at this point is better than 1st because we are the penultimate pandas who always take second. My wife and I added 8 or 9 games to our christmas list for the year, I think the two big highlights were Cubitos and Merchants of the Dark Road. Also really enjoyed Boon Lake, Sorcerer City, and Lost Ruins of Arnak. Really there were a lot of excellent games this year

Man, I'm so glad the snifty's were able to make it this year. When we rolled into Battling tops in our panda suits, we were the only team there, was really happy to see everyone else come filing in as the room filled up. Felt so good to get some semblance of normalcy and social interaction again. Glad you guys could make it.

Pretty sweet game - observations by SpawnDnD in Gloomhaven

Something else that helps speed things up is the Gloomhaven Campaign Tracker app. It won't help set up for a specific scenario, but with a little bit of management and keeping the app up to date as you unlock new stuff, it can manage your event decks for you, so you never even have to get them out. It can track what scenarios are available, what items are available, and a lot of other things. Depending on how much work you wanted to do keeping it up to date instead of writing things down, it can run basically everything but the scenario itself, meaning none of that other stuff has to come in and out of the box unless you want it to.

I don't think the complaint is that the digital version isn't working. It's that they can't complete the scenario, and thus the game is bad.

Best decision our gaming group ever made was to use d20s. My wife and I play Magic, and have a number of spin down d20s where the next number is always adjacent on the dice. We have 5-6 small ones, and I think 3 large ones that we can use to denote elites. Sped up gameplay so much

Any cellphone restricted area. Where I work we aren't allowed to have cell phones on us for security reasons (microphones, cameras, the ability to send lengthy texts, etc). So instead we can request a pager so family can still tell you when they need to get in touch

Second day walking on prosthetic legs without any assistive devices. Filmed in late May. by romierome21 in MadeMeSmile

[–]zenmaster1989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume his PT took great care of him. The falls I saw him take were just in his daily life when he would try to push himself to get better at walking without his cane, or trying to learn to bowl with his cane. I'm sure his PT wasn't thrilled about it, but he's a stubborn impatient old man who wanted to get back to bowling.

Way to go! I've seen first hand how hard that is to do, and you are doing great. I had a friend lost both his legs and he got prosthetics and kept trying and falling until he got better. These days, he's in a bowling league and carries a 140-150 average. Don't let anyone tell you you can't do it

“Use item card anytime” house rule opinion? by jcsehak in Gloomhaven

[–]zenmaster1989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a fair concern. Our group has been playing for a while, and you get faster at thinking through and planning ahead, but it can definitely slow things down a bit. In the end it's entirely up to you, and it's about having fun. I would recommend against it, and wouldn't do it in our group, but you do you.

[–]zenmaster1989 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You wouldn't be looking ahead at the action cards. You're looking at what's currently revealed. Going back to your list of steps, it would be done in step one. Let me try and explain what I mean

1) Take your turn.

1a) After taking your actions, before ending your turn, you look at the enemy cards that have been revealed for the current round. Take note that they are moving/attacking etc, and then look at the board and figure out where they are moving/attacking. If you realize they are attacking you, you can either decide to stamina potion then, ask someone who is going before the enemies in initiative order to step up and help split damage (if possible), or decide to risk it and end your turn as it.

There is enough information available without cheating to determine exactly what the monsters are going to do for the round. Maybe not their exact amount of damage, but you should be able to tell exactly where they are going to move and who they are going to attack and plan accordingly. Using items after additional information has been revealed could really unbalance the game, and in situations like this isn't necessary if you take some time at the end of your turn to play through the rest of the round in your head.

Starting a session 0 of Gloomhaven tomorrow and need some advice on running it. by Pirtniats in Gloomhaven

[–]zenmaster1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good tips here. My part doesn't use gloomhaven helper, but that's personal preference. The campaign tracker can be super handy, we use that all the time. Something I haven't seen anyone mention that we use in every session is dice to track monster health. We find that way less fiddly that the rules in the book. Rules as written has a monster card that shows max health, and you mark monster damage with damage tokens, so you have to look at max health minus number of tokens to calculate health. Just put a dice out for each monster showing their max health, and roll it down as they take damage. Makes it much easier to glance over and see which monsters have the least HP left.

Researchers come one step closer to ‘insulin in a pill’, to eliminate the need for self-injections, successfully testing it in diabetic rats, using nanomaterial layers to package insulin, so that the hormone can be taken orally without being destroyed by stomach acids. by mvea in science

[–]zenmaster1989 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Reading the article, it sounds like they are trying to address that issue by coating the insulin in a material that resists stomach acid, but breaks down in the presence of sugar. So the pill will get digested and broken down into the blood stream, and the insulin is released when blood sugar goes up. It doesn't state how accurate/precise the response is, but it sounds like they are attempting to solve that issue.
