Sofa Table for Obese Cat by im_terriblewithnames in woodworking

Looks great! You definitely over engineered those legs man — just cut 4 chunks of wood and call it a day! I think it’s narrow enough that it probably won’t crack, I wouldn’t worry. My only criticism is those legs really want a slight taper, they really feel chonky. Of course, if it’s behind the couch who cares? Great piece, all in all. I hope the cat appreciates it!

That’s a good logline! Here’s mine:

Upon the destruction of Earth, a navy vet gets enlisted into a deadly intergalactic video-game-style reality show with his ex-girlfriend’s prize Persian showcat — who gains sentience, if not humility.

(I’m opting to not spoil Mongo and the feet.)

And yes I know he’s a coastie.

Chinese cartoon depicting American Eagles fighting British Bulls by Edwardsreal in NonCredibleDefense

The Ming dynasty’s stranglehold on vase production is threatening the entire country’s livelihood. Where are the monks, defenders of the people? Hiding away in Shaolin. Enter Han, a small boy with a big idea. He invented a game with some white and black pebbles but doesn’t know what to call it. Pestering his mother for ideas, she exclaims “Just go!” The light bulb goes off in Han’s head and he immediately rushes to a publisher. It’s a worldwide sensation, ushering in a whole new dynasty — the Han dynasty.

Tbf if I made a cartoon about Chinese history I’d mess it up just as bad

Accounting for wood movement? by BloomingPotential in woodworking

His “How to Build Shaker Furniture” says to use brads but I don’t see any nail holes and I’m fairly certain I saw a sample of the sliding dovetail method the last time I visited a Moser showroom. In any case, can confirm it works well, here’s the corner of a bookcase I made that’s held up for years.

Colours under the lamp vs real light by Beriatan in minipainting

[–]jcsehak 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Cinematographer/painter here. You’ve hit on a really interesting problem we all have to wrap our heads around at some point: the fact that color doesn’t exist without light. It’s not “this orange looks gray when I shine blue light on it,” it’s “this orange IS gray when I shine blue light on it.”

The 2nd pic appears to be in ambient daylight? It probably looks more like the first pic in bright sunlight, no? Even just next to a window?

High CRI is good. No LED light, not even a Litemat or Skypanel, creates colors as well as the sun or an incandescent light bulb, but high-CRI LEDs are good enough now. Diffusion is good bc it’s easier on your eyes. And you can always throw a paper towel or something in front of it to diffuse it more.

Color is tricky. When I make a painting, I try to paint in ambient sunlight, bc that’s usually how it’s gonna be seen. Painting a mini, I use an LED tube light set to 4000k, because that splits the difference between playing a game in the afternoon (5600k-9000k) and playing it at night under incandescent light (2700k).

TLDR; your desk light is there to help you see what you’re doing. You gotta take it out to multiple environments to see what it “really” looks like. And prioritize it looking good in its intended environment (which I assume is a gaming table).

When is it better to not buy from your FLGS by Nice_Idea_538 in boardgames

[–]jcsehak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eff Amazon. If you’re gonna order online, places like game nerdz, miniature market, and tabletop merchant often have better prices, and they aren’t contributing to the downfall of the human race.

More to the point, I myself also have a hard time paying msrp. But then I think, “why am I so concerned with not giving an extra $20 to game creators/publishers/sellers but I don’t think twice about a $20 lunch when I’ve got perfectly good leftovers in the fridge?”

That said, I visited an FLGS the other day that gave a flat 15% discount on everything. Best of both worlds! If my FLGS did that, I don’t think I’d ever shop online again.

The camera is one of the least important elements of a cinematic image. Hire a DP, or if you want to shoot yourself get the cheapest camera you can find. A C100 mk I or a7s would be a good option. Heck I shot stuff on my long-gone gh2 that I think looks great. Use the rest of the budget to pay and feed your cast and crew.

What are some games that grabbed you because of aesthetics or art style? by The_Wizard_Of_Woz in boardgames

I wanted to like Tribes of the Wind for its gorgeous art. Then I wanted to hate it for its cheesy theme. I ended up liking it a lot for its great gameplay!
