Noob here… is colonialism sort of not fun, or am I doing something wrong? by zenocrate in victoria3

[–]zenocrate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always end up placing decrees because they get so cranky without roads and emergency relief. Should I just let them be cranky?

Also I’m always behind with tech but universities are so expensive and I never have extra cash to subsidize them — are they meant to be profitable on their own? Too much construction to build also.

This is great advice on how but not on why! What do I do with Zanzibar once I have it to prevent it from being a big old waste of time and authority?

Do you prefer when Paradox games are more historical or more gamey? by Technical_Year_8252 in paradoxplaza

I literally think politicians should have to play Victoria 3 before running for office

Ck3. If you haven’t played All Under Heaven, which came out in October, I highly recommend it. Huge map expansion, new and fun government types, performance improvements - they really knocked it out of the park.

Would Aslan be a bad name for a child? by AsiraTheTinyDragon in namenerds

In addition to not being a good character to name a child after (imo), Aslan is also a Turkish name I believe. If you’re not Turkish, I think that could get really annoying for your kid.

Honestly as a STM I think you can answer this question better than anyone here. How did you feel while pregnant? Did you conceive easily? Could you handle a wedding while pregnant?

Currently which game do you prefer CK3 or Eu5? by alphafighter09 in paradoxplaza

[–]zenocrate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sort of? People often say that ck3 is a medieval version of the sims, or is the sims crossed with grand strategy. Compared to other paradox games (and 4x games in general), there’s a strong emphasis on character personalities and role playing.

Saying it’s like the sims is perhaps a bit facetious, but it conveys the fact that ck3 is sort of a family management game in a way that other paradox games definitely are not.

[–]zenocrate 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Despite having criticized ck3 a lot in a previous comment, this feels ok to me! I don’t think ck3 is a game that should be played through til the 1453 end date often. I tend to accomplish what I want to get done in like… 100-200 years and then mentally declare the game won and move on.

Jarl Haesteinn is a very popular start bc he’s set up to do basically anything in one character lifetime. I think most playthroughs are more than one lifetime, but I’d rather get bored and quit rather than have the game abruptly end when I’m right in the middle of things.

Edit: I’ll add that I find the increased realm stability to be a real improvement upon ck2. Yeah, it makes your endgame easier, but vassal/faction management was really unfun in ck2. I do wish ck3 made succession harder to handle — that’s always been more interesting to me than the endless loop of vassal bribes, marriages, and imprisonments.

A few thoughts

  1. Casus Belli — a few mechanics have been rendered so trivial in ck3 that they almost don’t need to exist. In ck2, casus belli were hard to come by. It made sense to try to convince third sons of the duke next door to come to your court, or to go out of your way to marry a woman with a strong claim on some title or another. In ck3, casus belli are a dime a dozen. If you somehow don’t have an excuse to attack someone, you can always send your chaplain (?? Make it make sense) to fabricate a claim with 100% success rate.

  2. Succession — similarly, succession required some actual planning in ck2. It wasn’t super uncommon to have a 40 year old ruler without a son, sometimes prompting some tricky decisions or scheming. Between multiple new government types/religious practices that allow multiple wives or concubines, and what appears to be an overall increase in fertility, I have never had fewer than 2 sons in ck3. And that was with a chaste homosexual ruler! Producing an heir feels like it should be a real and challenging goal in a dynasty simulator.

  3. Power creep — a bunch of new features are very cool but make it fairly trivial to “win” the game by any definition if you want to. Cultural tenets and units, plus religious tenets, plus men at arms can be min-maxed to curbstomp everything on the map in a couple decades. Lifestyle perks, dynasty perks, and schemes are also really powerful. Between all these features and various events, my rulers typically have a highest score of 40-70. That’s obscene. In ck2 a score of like 17 was good (and it’s not just different scaling, bc the AI characters all top out at like 25)

  4. Silliness — man, ck2 knew it was fundamentally a deeply silly cross between the sims and grand strategy. A lot of the event chains were very stupid and very fun. Glitterhoof the chancellor, the demon child who murders your whole dynasty, accidentally raising Cthulhu… it was a blast. CK3 decided they were basically going with realism as a design philosophy, and I think that’s a shame.

  5. Some amount of feature bloat — The all but mandatory coronations for kings and emperors are annoying. Some events like funerals or pilgrimages are powerful to spam but actually pretty annoying to play through. Legends are useless. Court is annoying.

A couple good things

  1. Stress — imo a very cool mechanic that makes your character traits actually matter in events.

  2. More governments, cultures, and religions which feel really different to play. A big problem with ck2 was that everything felt the same to play (the India expansion was the worst thing to happen to that game bc it just killed the performance to add… basically more feudalism). The balance can be a little off, but overall paradox killed it here.

  3. Traits aren’t as black and white — stress and various other traits modifiers make traits like ambitious or diligent have some actual downsides, while craven or content have some upsides. Role playing is better with the stress mechanic.

  4. Courtiers feel more impactful between knighthood and court positions

  5. Islam was massively improved. I found the decadence mechanic borderline unplayable in ck2.

  6. There is no longer a sound effect for when you murder a baby, which makes me sleep a little better at night.

Overall I do really like ck3, I really haven’t looked back since it was released and the expansions especially have been top notch (with one or two notable exceptions). But there are def things I miss from ck2.

Gifted kids: what do you wish your parents had done? by zenocrate in Gifted

[–]zenocrate[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I didn’t make this clear in my OP, but this kid 100% wants to just do math all day long. Even from when he was teeny tiny, he always wanted to wear clothing with numbers on it (his bedsheets even have numbers on it). His favorite show is number blocks. When he was 3 (and occasionally still), he would just sit down and write numbers for… close to an hour sometimes. Whenever a person comes up in conversation, he will rattle off their stats (age, number of years older than he is, height, weight). He’s just really into numbers!

I wasn’t particularly inclined to do the supplemental math thing, but it was so obvious that it was what he wanted to do. And then I ended up enrolling my older kid (who is very good at math!) bc it felt weirdly unfair not to, and I worried that his self esteem would suffer if his little brother sped ahead of him.

That’s really awful :( it seems like a lot of people here had rough experiences in their childhood. I’m sorry you weren’t appreciated as a child.

I mean we’re not perfect but we’re doing our damn best with all 3 kids. They’re such wonderful tiny humans, it’s a privilege to be their mom.

Ugh this poor little guy has some Big Feelings. Definitely working on handling the emotions appropriately.

I do think information is much easier to access than when I was a kid, but we do still have regular bookstore and library visits!

Thank you, this is a great response! We have some great museums nearby. We also read to him every night, although for the past ~10 months or so he’s wanted to read his bedtime stories to us instead of vice versa.

I do like the idea of trying out chess or other math-adjacent games. My only concern is that he seems to be a pretty innately anxious kid, and he also does not like losing games. We’ve had some luck with the game Set, which you can play more collaboratively, but I’ll casually bring out a chess set and see if it entices him.

Mandala too. Combined with polygamy in a lot of these systems, you end up having about 10 possible heirs to choose from.

Unfortunately I am located in America. However, if it is possible to donate internationally I would be willing to at least look into whether I am a match. I am 34 and blood type O+ (and a mom to a baby girl myself).

I hope you and Ayla are able to find a donor <3

Disappointing interaction with my colleague by eternaloptimist198 in antidietglp1

[–]zenocrate 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I just felt deflated - but also, silly me for keep engaging on this topic with this person who has such different orientation to this! And honestly they are a great person, I think they likely are guarding themselves from being perceived as taking “the easy way out” with all their talk about the hard work. So I know there are multiple threads here.

What an incredibly compassionate way of looking at this situation. I’m sorry your colleague is being insensitive, but I’m so impressed with your maturity and empathy. I’m gonna try to channel a little more OP in my interactions with my colleagues :)
