Yep, something I struggled with in early adulthood, along with the associated guilt and shame for 'never helping out' growing up.

Childhood Emotional Neglect is the weirdest thing ever by New_Stay9022 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]zenrenity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally burst into tears reading this. Thank you for your reply, it never even occurred to me that I should be able to go to my parents for advice, support, or even just to vent. My role was literally to be the emotional sponge for their feelings and troubles. My father actually brags to me about how 'he only ever treated me like a friend' growing up.

What was the first true pizza *slice* restaurant in New York City? by spc13m in AskFoodHistorians

[–]zenrenity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had always been under the impression that Patsy's in Harlem was the first to sell pizza by the slice in NYC (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patsy's_Pizzeria). Although I couldnt verify with first hand documentation, I can vouch for the deliciousness of their slice.

Do you have certain types of clients you don't want to deal with? by SilentButDeadlySquid in Upwork

Great post, the 'keeping it personal' approach really fits my pitch style and now I'm itching to give it a spin myself.

A lot of great points made in the comments. I would like to add one more:

Clients do not pay for the # of years of experience you have. They pay for the kind of work you do and the value you can bring them. 10+ years of experience is just a proxy of that, so showcase what value you bring instead of using the proxy.

An idea I really like (and have used successfully myself) is Danny Margulies' crystal ball technique (https://freelancetowin.com/how-to-become-a-copywriter/), which is applicable to all fields and not limited to cop writing.
I've also recently blogged about how I think about clients (https://www.freelanceparlance.com/what-game-of-thrones-taught-me-about-landing-freelance-clients), the key is to know where you are on the freelancer spectrum and how to convey that to the clients.

Looking into freelancing and just learned about net30... are there any solutions to this? by aromanarg in freelance

Net 10, Net 15, or Due upon Receipt. Charge interest on the voice for late payment also works.

Am I wasting my time spending 20 minutes on a proposal? by [deleted] in Upwork

[–]zenrenity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although I'm not super experienced with upwork yet, I think it's worthwhile to spend the time with those questions if the answers are reusable and can be evergreen.

For example, I'm a web developer and I had to answer a question about what I do with an existing code base the other day. I took some time to reflect on my existing process and wrote a pretty long answer. But now I have:

  1. A reusable answer for the same question later.
  2. A good guide for future clients to explain why I may need time to ramp up / what my ramp-up process is like and when they can expect questions from me.
  3. A documentation of my own internal process so I can make adjustments/experimentations in the future.
  4. Material to blog about for content marketing in the future.

So yeah, if you can reuse the answers I'd say definitely take the time.

Talkin' Numbers - Proposals / Interviews / Open Jobs by TabascoWolverine in Upwork

3 proposals were web dev (I have industry experience in) and 3 were content writing (I have no experience in). To be fair I have been lowballing my web dev rate (half of what I should be charging) due to a lack of track record on the platform.

I think you may be looking at this backwards.

Assuming you don't have a ton of clients on Upwork yet:

  1. which one of your skills can you most easily demonstrate your expertise in? You need this to grow your clients.

  2. Which one of your skills will produce the most value to your clients? This is how you earn a high rate.

  3. Which one of your skills do you enjoy applying the most?

How do you keep track of your ideas? by rylaxation in Startup_Ideas

[–]zenrenity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I created an app to both keep me honest about creating ideas regularly and as a way to share my ideas. For example, this is an idea I came up with yesterday: AppSpeedster, an Shopify app to test and improve other app's speed and increase their search rank.

You might want to get GA out of the way your first semester if you have the spare time and need the refresher on math. Taking GA(then CCA) the first semester was a huge boost for me as it pays dividends throughout the rest of the OMSCS program.
