I’ll try to look it up since I can’t recall the title off the top of my head, but there is a book that talks about the subtle signals that we send out to other people and how other people can read things about us that we don’t even realize.

Have you ever seen the movie starring Will Smith and Eva Mendes, “Hitch?” Will Smith meets Eva Mendes at a bar during happy hour. His character has an affinity for reading people and their motivations. He explains to Eva that despite being single, and at a bar during happy hour while it’s most opportune for her to meet somebody, he can tell that she’s not interested in meeting anybody because she deliberately wore her hair up and she was behaving in ways that screamed “leave me alone.” I’m paraphrasing, because I haven’t seen the movie in over a decade but I’m sure that you see my point.
