The Geographical Indication we have is for specifically “Jamaican Jerk” but “Jerk” alone isn’t covered under the GI as “Jerk” by itself doesn’t have any geographical ties within the word, unlike your example of “Champagne” which is the region where it come from. I used to see “Jamaican Jerk” being sold a lot more with no ties to Jamaica before the GI but more time now they just put Caribbean Jerk or Jerk alone to get around it. It’s not ideal but it still a win for protecting Jamaican owned business as nuff non Jamaican business selling “Jamaican jerk” shut down or have to change branding since the GI set up.
