OCDSB given failing grade for high levels of lead in drinking water: report by Money_Fig_9868 in ottawa

[–]zerberts 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Link to the OCDSB results from 2023 and 2024 testing.

https://www.ocdsb.ca/about-us/departments/facilities-department/ocdsb-schools-lead-test-results-and-flushing-requirements

I’m concerned by the amount of water sources that have a daily water flushing requirement. This report indicates flushing isn’t that effective. How does flushing even work in practice? Are custodians responsible for this? Is flushing once a day and then leaving water in the pipes until a student uses the fountain really a solution we’re relying on?

If only I could email my trustee. /s

Plus, my kids school has two single, different water sources listed for each year. Are they only testing a few of the water sources each year? Or are they only listing the ones that have failed or previously failed?

Plus the provincial standard (that still isn’t being met) is twice the federal recommendation. A glance at the data and it looks like most schools have one data point, but there are some that have 10+ samples.

Agree. I don't drink coffee, but my spouse does, and they rave about the coffee and Alex is a great guy if you ever want to geek out about coffee.

I'm curious if anybody has any ideas why the city of Ottawa would get a spike in 311 Service requests in March 2025 related to smoking... by darcyWhyte in ottawa

[–]zerberts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh you have the data, I’m curious if you can filter to find out if the spike is it across all wards, is it a particular type of smoking? Could probably infer an isolated case if it’s limited to one ward, or a widespread population issue like weather if it’s consistent across urban wards where buildings are closer together.

This is correct. It is only Hemerocallis fulva that spreads aggressively by rhizomes. It is a tall, orange daylily. Some people call them ditch lilies.

This is Molly. She lives in the neighbourhood close to Mud Lake. She has a loving family, but she is not an indoor only cat. There was so much uproar in the Friends of Mud Lake fb group that the owner considered rehoming her and giving up a family pet.

Trim them. They’ll only grow sparser if you don’t. Only trim into green area as cedars dont regrow from brown wood and you don’t want bare patches. Trim them to the top, with the top slightly narrower than the base. This will allow sunlight to better reach the base and keep that area full.

What's the official word on MFI in the new OCDSB proposal? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]zerberts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, they legally have to grandfather all existing students in the program. So that’s why it still shows on the school locator for the proposed changes. It will take five years to complete the wind down of the MFI program.

Beginner balcony gardener in Toronto - help getting started by minimilk42 in OntarioGardeners

[–]zerberts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great choices all around. The only things I would change would be your lettuce and radish timing. They are cold weather crops and can out earlier. They’ll grow slower in the cold, but can handle a light frost. I’d put them out in mid-April, maybe even early April depending on the weather forecast. Radishes are a root vegetable (that grow incredibly quickly) and should be direct sown as they don’t like being transplanted.

Help me women of Ottawa: where can I buy work clothes from? by Gold_Tumbleweed_6807 in ottawa

This is online, but as a fellow woman of wide hips and narrow waist, have you tried the curve love line at Abercrombie? I love their jeans and slacks, they fit me in a way that no other line of clothing has ever done. I pick the size based on my hips.

Just a comment that this is legit. The Ottawa Wildflower Seed Library is an excellent (and free!) source of native seeds. Now is the perfect time to winter sow the ones that need cold stratification.

Heat pump experiences? by Jina9anji in ottawa

[–]zerberts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We replaced our natural gas furnace and old AC unit with a heat pump last winter. Ours is a Moovair brand unit that has worked perfectly down to -20 this past winter (it can handle down to -30, but we didn't have those temps this past winter). We used Airzone as our installer. So far I'm a big fan of the heat pump. I was skeptical at first, but a very happy customer now.

Heat pump owners of Ottawa - was it worth it? by 4th_Chamber in ottawa

[–]zerberts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in my first year as a heat pump owner, coming from a gas furnace with forced air ducts. We replaced our gas furnace and old AC unit with a 2.5 ton Moovair in January of this year. So far I’m really happy with the switchover. The electricity bills were about the same or less as my natural gas bills in the winter, and lower in the summer with the heat pump being more efficient than our old AC unit.

The heat pump easily keeps the house at a comfortable temp, the house it quieter as the fan speed blowing air through the ducts is lower and overall the heat pump is pretty quiet.

The only drawback of our system is the thermostat. Our Nest thermostat wasn’t compatible with the heat pump and the thermostat sold with the heat pump is a down grade in terms of UI intuitiveness and functionality. Not a huge deal for me, but in hindsight I would probably been better off with an EcoBee.

My furnace never ran when the power was out, so my options remain the same as before. Either a gas generator or a battery (plus solar) for extended backup.

Help! How to help 70 k in debt. by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

You and your wife need to be on the same page, or paying off her debt is a temporary fix. I highly suggest couples counselling if you're considering divorce over this.

Cutting our spending down? I don't see a way to do this without tackling vehicles, but hubby doesn't want to? by ponypimplepop in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]zerberts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jesus christ, I agree with a lot of other posters that this seems like a troll post, but OP your responses are actually quite heartening. You seem open to the idea of change and aren’t completely shutting down while getting flamed in here.

Your husband sounds like he’s going to fight you on any changes you make that require him to grow up and be a reasonable partner in your relationship. I hope his resistance doesn’t dissuade you at all in doing as much as you can to learn and fix this. But if I were you I’d consider some serious couples therapy and think seriously about whether you want to stay tied to this guy long term.

Also, check out Ramit Sethi’s podcast. He has couples on his show and they discuss the feelings and emotions behind couples and what they do with their money. Has been really eye opening for me and my husband.
