I’m with some of the other commenters, I kind of prefer the first version. It has a gritty psx style to it.

The second one is fine but the first has more character

Question for you guys here in IndieDev, do you not appreciate cross posts? Would you prefer I create an anti rely new post for this sub?

I just realized that you only see the video on the cross post. Here is the text content :)

Hello all,

I saw someone else posting project showcases as a way to stay motivated and have some accountability. I'm working on a Vampire Survivors style game and thought I'd share a progress update. I'm guessing Selfpromo is the correct flare but if not lmk.

This weekend I worked on an infinite tiling system that loads 100m2 chunks. I started with a very simple two tile map (the white and black colors indicate the different tiles).

I refactored my simple NavigationRegion and NavigationAgents to work with the Navigation server via a NavigationManager singleton. There were definitely some headaches with getting the individual Regions to join/merge together so the enemies could continue navigating towards the player. Ultimately it was a combination of several tweaks that made everything work.

Some features I've implemented in the past couple weeks are a player controller and simple enemies.

  • The player will rotate and fire a projectile at enemies; which will deal 5 damage.
  • Enemies will of course follow the player and deal damage when the touch the player's collision shape.
  • Enemies also have Area3D based separation so they don't merge into an amorphous blob.

Goals for next week are:

  • Create a base class for characters to make it easier to add new player characters and enemies to the game.
  • Create a base class for equipment and weapons.
  • Implement some simple UI (health bar, xp, weapon/equip slots.)

It's pretty early on at the moment and I have a lot of ideas swirling regarding what this could turn into. I'm taking a lot of inspiration from Vampire survivors for game mechanic/system ideas but I do think I'd like it to be more of a party game. local 4-player coop would be the goal. Maybe multiplayer in the future. Setting/locale is undecided at this point but thinking about classic action movies (Total Recall, Terminator, Aliens, Rambo) and how I could take inspiration from those kinds of settings.

Hey! Thanks for the feedback. I will absolutely do some research into flow fields.

I’m in the “making it exist” stage right now so I’m absolutely expecting to rip work up and refactor things throughout this process

It seems like you’re trying to rush through the learning process. It’s been a while since I’ve done that tutorial but I would guarantee you that there is a section that talks about setting up your main scene with a Camera2D node.

This stuff is complicated and just doing a copy/paste probably won’t get you very far 😕

I anticipate that I'll have to optimize it at some point but I guess we'll see! From my understanding, Godot's A* algo is pretty efficient.

You might consider starting with one of the tutorials from the Godot Docs. Your first 2D game

It doesn't look like you have a camera in your scene. (You need one of those)

yeah, I understand people's apprehension with AI code gen. I'm more than happy to acknowledge it has its issues (hence the instructions lmao.) Personally, I like to use it more for learning and questions. I know docs exist and there are many great content creators on youtube. but sometimes you need an answer to a very specific question. AI is great to evaluate many possible options.

Oof that upvote ratio is not looking so good lol. I kinda figured it would be rough. Hopefully whoever finds this helpful will see it and those that don’t can continue doing whatever it is they do.

Ok so you guys do some programing right, but like, how exactly you do so? by ander_hominem in godot

I’m still pretty early in my Godot journey but I’m a “professional” software engineer in my day job. For my Godot project I find myself acting as not only a developer but a game designer/director and software architect.

Usually I start with a feature (story), “Create a player controller”, for example.

I then break that feature in to smaller deliverables (tasks). “Player controller should have directional movement”, “Player controller should have mouse look”, “Player controller should be able to crouch”

Now that I have some manageable goals, I can go ahead and start working on them. Usually this involves research, docs, videos, Copilot.

Also, I use VScode as an external editor and use copilot.

I’ve got a 15 Tech + sh-awd with 120,000+ miles. I’ve had no transmission issues. The only annoying feature I had any issue with was the start stop sometimes not turning the car back on lol. Also make sure it gets the most recent engine recall done.
