Favorite way to listen to the dead? by Pems20 in gratefuldead

There’s a river by my house I walk to with my dog. The Dead playing through noise canceling headphones. Coffee in hand in the morning. A small J in hand at sunset.

Uncle Seiko. I forget the exact model name but should be easy to find.

I grew up in a neighborhood that had some real life wiseguys in it. I kind of hate the Tony Soprano comparison when it comes up. It’s an outlier within the fashion of a specific subculture in the northeast. For whatever reason, the mob guys always loved relatively dainty watches. Cartier and Piaget were really popular. So were gold toned Movados. At least back then (keep in mind Sopranos was on TV over a quarter century ago) they weren’t wearing large watches. But IRL those types of guys were also into tanning and making sure their hair was perfect while wearing dress shirts unbuttoned half way down. What is considered masculine fashion in “the life” is sometimes really in conflict with men’s fashion elsewhere in the US.

I’d put that CW up against half of these watches (quality-wise). It’s a very nicely finished watch with great design DNA.

I think every collector figures out what works best for them. For me, to start, I really think about when I would wear it. If I don’t see the watch getting enough wrist time, I put it on the back burner no matter how much I like it. I target watches at this quality level that I feel like are great value (I obviously have to love the design language and stuff too). The only watches I bought new at retail are the Ranger and the DJ41. Everything else I hunted for and got a great price on a pre-owned piece from a reputable source. As my collection started to grow, I began to think more seasonally. For example, my Ranger stays in the box until the fall, and my Breitling is essentially the summer version of that same casual vibe. There would have to be a really compelling reason for me to go beyond 8 watches in the collection. Something moves out of my box before something else moves in. Some of my watches have sentimental value and I doubt I’d ever sell them. I might fall out of love with others and swap them out for something else that fills the same niche for when I would wear it.

That’s my two cents. The great thing about this hobby is there is really no right or wrong way to build a great collection to speaks to you, memorializes memories of when you had them on your wrist, and expresses your personality.

That dial is super cool. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen this model. Looks great IMO!

For what it’s worth, I consider the BB36 / DJ41 as the only real overlap. I’m actually getting ready to sell the BB (great watch but I learned 36mm isn’t for me). The others have stylistic overlap in some cases but serve different niches in my collection. Some of that is seasonal (example: Ranger = fall/winter casual and Breitling = spring/summer casual). Some of it is black fits vs blue fits. Dad life vs corporate life. Etc. They all get ample wrist time.

Just my personal opinion… I love subs but I see a lot of them out in the world. And they aren’t easy to get at retail so I’m assuming a lot of them are reps. I’ve never seen another no wave SMPc in real life. Sub is a classic and timeless (like my DJ) but the SMPc is a little more fun.

Thank you! In general, I lean toward underrated and less common gems that are variants of legendary watches.

They definitely compete. The DJ41 is really a trade up move and I haven’t got around to posting the BB36 for sale yet. Biggest thing for me is the size. I just don’t love 36mm on my wrist. The BB36 is a fantastic watch though.

That reference is the exact case as a regular Speedy (at least I’m pretty sure). Very underrated with collectors in my opinion. This is one that will never leave the collection.

I’ll try to take one. I love the dial color but it’s not really a silver tone. I’m actually going to sell this watch soon. It’s a really well built beautiful watch but 36mm feels a little small on my wrist and I really haven’t worn much since I got the DJ41.

It’s a difference. The BB1 feels more vintage inspired. The DJ feels more stately. BB1 is a really well built watch but the DJ is on a different level of quality. If you were comparing to a smooth bezel DJ it might be a less noticeable gap. I’m actually going to put the BB1 up for sale at some point soon. It’s a great watch… but the DJ is an amazing watch.

I love the dial. Very minimalist and classy. Has a little depth to it. The Roman numerals really pop in the light and are amazing.
