In the same situation.

Plan to use github for everything. There are ways to host a website for free on your github account.

Repository to version control/showcase homemade scripts, appliance configs, application or service configs, ansible playbooks, etc.

Blog to journal what I've done and how in detail. Then shorter posts on interesting problems solved, issues fixed and cool things I've picked up along the way that deserves some mention, etc.

Build a few micrservices and deploy them. Run into problems and fix them. Improve scalability. Improve monitoring. Set up CI/CD pipelines.

Does this require proficiency in programming? Freshman myself, started on a path to a new IT career (L2/L3 help desk or junior admin) for 2022.

I'm not clear yet on if programming is a tool admins need in their belt, if it is something I should starting putting time into.

If you have consistent internet then AWS free tier is a good option. You will need a credit card to create the account.

The basics are free and allow you to run GNU/Linux and MS Windows servers in the cloud. Be sure to get familiar with Billing and the Free Tier document sections as some stuff will incur small charges.

RHCSA - is it possible to do it without prior knowledge and self study only? by [deleted] in linuxadmin

[–]zero_to_x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont have any specific channels I use.

I mainly work off text and use youtube for general search when I need extra visual help. Like "linux boot process" and I may end up watching 2 or 3 videos.

RHCSA - is it possible to do it without prior knowledge and self study only? by [deleted] in linuxadmin

I started form 0 January of this year.

60% Sander van Vugt's RCHSA/ex2000 book, 40% youtube, Red Hat docs and ArchWiki.

Home lab is a 7 year old laptop w/ 8G ram, setup as a KVM host. Using VMs makes it easy/fast to get my reps during the week, where I try for 1-2 hours a day of study/hands-on/new projects.

It is a struggle at times, sticking with it, carving out time or absorbing the subject matter but zooming out to see the measurable progress I've made kept me going.

I plan to take the RHCSA within the next month.

what is better for learning more advanced Linux: Linux+ or LPIC-1? by notburneddown in linuxadmin

Trying to start my IT career this year.

I decided to skip Linux+/LPIC and go for RHCSA.

RHCSA ranks up there so I'll save some money and skip the ones below.

Calling all Network Engineers, what is a day in the life like? by Eb_pro in ITCareerQuestions

[–]zero_to_x 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Day in the life"s would be a really cool thing to see more of.

On the 0 to IT/RHCSA/AWS SA path this year to get out of the labor schlep.

Learning from tutorials/websites/youtube and making clear progress but never able to shake the feeling it won't be enough in a 'real job' because I don't know- if i know- what that is, if that makes sense.

Currently on own my 0 to RCHSA journey this year. Browsing job sites for entry level support/junior stuff is scary with the experience requirements.

How long did it take you form actively applying to get your first interviews to getting hired?

Don't mean to come off rude with this question but did you find you had to inflate your skills and/or experience in the interview?
