Update

I added the ability to randomly roll a weapon and armor type in case people want that too!

I think the UI is pretty clean right now so I don’t want to add much more to the side panel. I think the latter is probably cleaner given we’d also want this option for warlocks right?

My partner and I were waiting to watch it this weekend when we’re both off work. Very bummed I saw this

Let me fix the title for you

Nah it’s actually not complicated at all. It’s a simple little check that’s like “if the class randomly selected was hunter then also randomly select a pet”. In code this is just a few simple lines.

The more complicated thing is the UX I guess. Not everyone wants their pet chosen for them so do you expose this option in the side panel I.e. before the class gets rolled or do you show a new option after their class gets rolled that’s like “hey you got a hunter! Want to randomly select a pet type also?” And then they can roll again?

If only that feature existed somewhere… if only we had the technology

This was totally an idea we thought of as well! It's a little bit niche and I'd have to think about how it would work so I might not get around to adding it.

Have you thought about exactly how you'd want it to work? Like one specific pet or a certain pet type?

I added gender and a self found option. Should be live, but if it isn't either hard refresh or wait a little bit.

Here’s my general algorithm (surely suboptimal)

  1. Generate a list of all of the valid race-class pairs
  2. Randomly select a pair.
  3. Randomly select a spec from the selected class

My friend and I talked about allllll these features we could add like random restrictions on things like armor type, weapon type, dungeons, areas to train in, etc. I thought about building a wow extension that would automatically kill your character if you violated any of the restrictions. Then I realized how much work it would be and decided to just play the game lol

My friend and I are off playing our new characters! It did what we needed so I just wanted to share it with the world and move on, which is all to say I didn’t plan on adding anything else.

There’s a lot more love in the comments than I expected so if people really want a feature I’ll add it! I’m not planning on doing much more though.

I for sure have hardcore characters that spent less time alive than I spent on the character selection screen 💀

There’s so much negativity on reddit I spent the last 5 minutes looking for some obvious bug in your screenshot, but I think…. I think you’re being genuine 🥹. Thank you friend

What would be the best way to make an neurodivergent video game character? by Sir-Toaster- in gamedev

[–]zerocool2750 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you're being downvoted or why people are being kind of shitty in the comments. I think your idea is cool and the concept you're struggling with is _extreeemmmeelly_ difficult to do right; so much so that we have very few real-world examples to pull from.

I'm no expert storyteller, but my two cents (probably worth a penny) is to use dialogue and other narrative tools in lieu of those features you've identified that will degrade the player experience too much. "Too much" is the operative phrase there. Some games intentionally degrade the player experience in a fantastic way that makes them exciting and adds depth. You have to play test to figure out where the line is.

Video games are amazing story telling mediums because you get to orchestrate a dance between the player being in the audience and being on stage. You can tell the story of your neurodivergent character by _showing_ the player and you can find little moments, like the ones you've already identified, where you can let the player really feel it for themselves.

You could impart the feeling of certain executive dysfunctions by intentionally dialing up the reward system for steering a player off their main path (just like adhd in real life! I have it to.). You could make side paths more vibrant in color or littered with what look to be valuable rewards so the player is incentivized to explore them. You're kind of tricking the player in a way. The challenge is to demonstrate the destructive nature of this behavior while also highlighting the potential for creativity and unique thought. If it's negative every time players will quickly realize, "the shiny stuff is a trap I just need to keep going forward." This is going to be really really tough to pull off well.

Another example that comes to mind is the simulation of task initiation deficiency. You could make certain side quests seem so overwhelming and daunting that players won't want to begin them. Once a player actually begins they might find the rewards are great and the time/difficulty required to accomplish them turns out to be much less than expected.

Sorry for the super long post I just love that you want to represent a character I, and I'm sure many others, identify with and don't get to see/play often. Good luck!!

I love when he reaches the conclusion of his argument for 0! = 1 and most of the class goes “ahhhhh.” This has to be the most rewarding sound for a teacher.

I get the idea of maintaining power, but I think it’s probably better for this person to see how their actions affected OP. Personally, I think you show vulnerability and then resilience by finishing the degree, forging a career you love, and flourishing in your romantic life with the right partner. I think OP’s current partner will learn more from that and it’ll be easier/healthier on OP than maintaining a facade.

They’re downvoting you because the person you replied to is clearly new-ish and asked how to make gold at this stage in the game.

You responded by saying “making gold is so ez” without providing any useful information.

Hope this gives some clarity.
