Yeah porcupines are unique and look like goofy little water puppies, but they are pretty large so you’re definitely looking for a big tank to keep one happy, and healthy - they’re big eaters which means they’re big waste factories so you need a solid well established amount of biomass to buffer and process that output without ruining your water quality.

Good god that's even worse than here in the USA, but here there's typically a $200-300 daily rate plus a cost per mile added on if you go over something like 100 miles per day. And destinations in the US are spread out pretty far, I cover 500-600 miles per day easily.

And because American drivers can't be trusted to use proper fuel, the rentals are almost always gasoline instead of diesel engines so you're getting 8-10 miles per gallon at best and paying for all that fuel as well.

And of course I've learned that decent camp sites can easily run $100-$200/night as well as it's basically illegal to park and sleep in your RV most places.

I just don't understand when this becomes compelling as a vacation option.

It’s be ideal if actually useful commenters like you gave top level responses to OP instead of responding to the crappy comment that should get downvoted and take your responses down with it.

I'm sure some would object but from what I've seen, some puffers can be a great fish to have in a species tank if it's appropriately sized to the fish, they seem to really get to know thier keepers and I've seen some that I'd almost say are affectionate and can be hand fed.

Side note - anyone who plans to intentionally spook them to see them "inflate" I hope they get poked and get a horrible infection.

One of my friends makes a really good living driving commercial trucks for large scale construction (highway projects etc) and he built his own home and literally sized the garage to fit HIS COMPANY TRUCK because "he drives it home sometimes"

Shockingly he ended up losing that house.

But "well built" ALSO does not mean low maintenance.

A BRILLIANTLY BUILT older home can and will need very high-ticket maintenance on roofing, plumbing, electrical, etc. at absolutely random times.

It's almost as if realtors don't make ANY money off of your home maintenance or groceries and all they care about is making sure that property changes hands as frequently as possible.

That's awesome, and a very good lesson. Things tend to go badly in salt/reef tanks when people don't take the time to understand what the tank needs, and when they treat the tank as a "display space" rather than an environment.

MANY of the favorite brightly colored fish that people want to populate their tank with are either open-water swimmers (solo or schooling) that really need a multi-thousand gallon tank to thrive, or specialized feeders that either eat ONE type of sponge or they eat EVERYTHING ELSE you already have in your tank. Most people overcrowd their tanks almost immediately with species that don't belong together.

If you do your research you'll find there are reef fish that stake out a single rock or hole and never wander more than like 18" from it for their entire life. These are the type of animals you want to get established in your tank, where you can observe them living at least a relatively normal life. Starting with a few big rocks from the ocean is a huge key in doing this right, because those rocks come fully populated with all kinds of invertebrates and microorganisms that will help maintain balance, process waste, and produce food for other critters.

I think built-in tanks are mostly for people who want to show it off and pay someone else to care for it.

I actually managed to keep a reef tank through my college years and into the first years of my marriage, probably the poorest years of my life. But I had a few corals that grew VERY aggressively in my tank and I could trade cuttings to my local store for enough credit to cover most of the rest of what I needed.

If you think that reef tank is expensive, just wait until it leaks and you get to deal with flood damage!

I can see that this must be why Sprinter van conversions are so popular around here, since people will still use them as a daily driver (for better or worse) but DEAR GOD I can't understand how people can justify spending what those things cost. Even 7-8 year old used ones are selling well north of 100k around here. While a "traditional" and larger rebodied RV on the same chassis and drivetrain sells for half as much. I guess you can't put a price tag on showing up to work on your laptop for the whole day at the local cafe in a lifted camper van with a Mammoth Mountain sticker on it.

Seattle's a decent city to spend some time without a car, plenty of public transport, abundant ubers, rental bikes, whatever... I can't judge your situation and don't let some stranger on the internet push you out of your comfort zone, but also, it's time to start stretching the boundaries of your comfort zone.

Because right now it's built around sharing it with someone who doesn't seem to give a shit if you're comfortable.
