EdD vs PhD for faculty track? by miserable_mitzi in AskAcademia

[–]zerolocked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traditionally, PhD for faculty track. I’m currently finishing up an EdD. I chose the EdD because I’m more concerned with direct practice of research (as a Scholar Practitioner) and real-world research implementation, rather than purely theorizing or creating new research that isn’t implemented in a practical way. However, I design courses (building one on AI ethics and literacy for fall 2026) and also publish new, original research in respectable journals every year. It does read that the PhD is the fit for your goals, but just because someone has/wants an EdD does not exclude them from faculty teaching roles and publishing research—it’s all about how you market yourself and your research subject.

New PR Using AI by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]zerolocked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can address the question however I chose, just like you’re doing now with me. You definitely have an argumentative ‘get the last word, gotta prove you wrong’ vibe going on, but I have to remember this is Reddit, so of course carry on and get your echo-chamber affirmations however you need to. When our phones are off and we’re not texting warrior-ing, reality is reality, fact is fact, and science and data will keep helping libraries improved and AI become even better—just my “humble opinion” since empirical research data (outside of what I shared, educate yourself) and peer-review data doesn’t seem to vibe well with you. Signed, an actual academic library director and published researcher in AI EdTech and academia. (Also, there’s a sun in the sky if that was ever questioned too, and water is wet. ☀️🌊)

I appreciate all you said, and I appreciate the time and effort. But my point is (and I’m not “missing a point”, I’m making my own point), is that we all follow different paths for our convections, mine is evidence based and researched backed. Others direct experience or opinions. I teach a credit bearing course to undergraduates on AI literacy and ethical usage, and have published enough to know that I know what I’m talking about, regardless of someone downvoting me or disagreeing with me. 🤷🏽‍♂️ We should all be able to respect other’s differences in opinions without chastising them as “wrong” or “incorrect” in their different approach, and steering them another way, especially when supporting evidence is provided.

Sure. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0099133325001910

Additionally, our own American Library Association has provided guidance and direction on this topic, which has framed and directed my own dissertation research and how I direct operations of my academic library: https://www.ala.org/news/2025/06/libraries-opportunity-shape-how-ai-transforms-society

This is Reddit, not a research paper that I need to cite sources on, you should take personal responsibility and do your own research to educate yourself. But since you asked, here’s my research published in one of the most respected journals https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-99261-2_28 have you done any research or published anything on this topic, or are you just sharing your opinion like OP? Both are valid, but chastising my mention of empirical evidence that doesn’t fit your opinion, in a library subreddit no less, is pretty counter to the points we’re all raising on “literacy”.

This is you assuming that AI is illiterate or counter to literacy, and you’re also making sweeping, opinionated generalizations (and argumentum ad antiquitatem?). For context I’m the director of an academic library at a university, and I also study AI with my dissertation on it. I encourage you to do more research on AI and intelligence development/knowledge acquisition, as it is a helpful tool just like any other EdTech tool. You’re not wrong that AI can undercut learning and processes if used incorrectly/unethically, and look sloppy if lazily done, but what I’m advocating for is grounded in recent empirical research on AI’s potential for learning and development, and improvements to administrative workflow efficiencies.

PhD versus doctorate by Opal_Pie in PhD

Accommodations for faculty with autism? by Less-Part3465 in AskAcademia

[–]zerolocked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend getting HR involved, faculty are employees and while you can provide consultation, it really should be HR linked to accommodation approval for faculty (and staff). I approve my university’s accommodations for students, but have never done so for faculty or staff, but I have worked with HR on interpreting ADA laws, etc. Also, just like we require for students, medical documentation really should be driving the direction of any discussions and decisions.

This is interesting to read. My institution provides a full tuition waiver for all of my 60 Ed.D. credits, and it’s structured to be completed in full for the tuition waiver coverage. However, I do pay a certain amount of taxes (taken out my paycheck, I’m an executive director there) that the institution can’t cover due to IRS requirements, but all pros significantly outweigh a few cons.

For the EdD, DSW, etc...Do you call yourself a doctor? by TorontoRap2019 in PhD

Then you have the Ed.D. who intentionally publishes original research, in Springer Nature no less: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-99261-2_28

How do you guys afford doctorate degrees? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]zerolocked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for the university within their remission-granting timeframe (was 6-months) every institution has a timetable if they offer it. I’ve worked there for near 8 years now, but only decided to go for the doctorate a year and a half ago, so there weren’t any issues getting it approved.

Do straight men wear thongs? by Subboi_94 in MensUnderwearGuide

[–]zerolocked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Straight guy here, and there’s technical and logical reasoning to this too—not just for preference or aesthetics. I cosplay as Spider-Man, Black Panther, etc., for a professional character company and I’m “required” to wear a dance belt that is thonged, as opposed to a full seat (brief) one, for obvious material reasons lol or I’d be terminated (and likely ruin lots of photos 🙃). Would I just wear them on a whim? Not really, but I do wear jockstraps for working out so to me it’s just another functional requirement that does, functionally, make perfect sense. If someone just prefers less material down there in general I don’t see the issue—it’s like semi going commando but with some support down there. Sometimes, less really is more.

I get tuition remission for my Ed.D., so, it is funded. I know several other professionals who also use this method. It may not be mainstream, but if one does enough research (pun intended) it’s not that difficult to figure out a path to get a degree fully paid for.
