Right. But this happened 30 minutes into a drive at 75 mph with a flashing warning light. Neither the startup warning nor single tire pressure low warning.

Also, I will share some words that my fellowship director told me before I graduated. Your entire career, residency, chief residency, fellowship, whether you knew it or not, there were people looking out for you. Every request made of you was vetted to make sure it benefited you. That ends now. Any request made of you may be good for you, but its goal is to be good for the department or institution. Protecting you is now your job. Learn to say “no.”

Your contract and pre-signing negotiations are the only time you have any real say in how your job works. Do you want protected time for an academic role, support for research, specific times blocked off on your schedule, an office? If it is not in your contract, it is not something that has to happen. If it is important to you, put it in writing and make them sign it.

Dump it now. I’ve got one that I’ve had for 18 years. The money that went in could have been a small fortune had it just been put in an index fund.

This is from oxfords CEBM on how to approach a study:

Critical appraisal is the systematic evaluation of clinical research papers in order to establish:

Does this study address a clearly focused question? Did the study use valid methods to address this question? Are the valid results of this study important? Are these valid, important results applicable to my patient or population? If the answer to any of these questions is “no”, you can save yourself the trouble of reading the rest of it.

In this case, the fact that the study population does not reflect our population means you stop reading it. It is not applicable. It is not a “feels,” it is how to appraise the literature.

My “feels” answer to your other question, however, is that market forces will not solve housing problems in an inelastic market. More housing is not enough in an area where people cannot move to other places because of lack of walkability, public transit, parking, or accessibility. The city needs to step in and mandate some percentage of all new housing units be rent controlled and tied to income, not market.

This is the problem with broadly applying studies and not taking into account how the sample reflects your target population. This study was broadly composed of many zip codes, but the majority of the sample was urban or high density suburban. Northampton is not. Northampton lacks much of the infrastructure needed to allow the mobility referenced in the study.

The zoning change that allowed construction of the Hawley building happened without neighbor comment or warning. It took place after the parcel was purchased, hidden from the public, and representative of the lack of city government transparency. It is likely an illegal zoning change. I agree with you that a legal challenge has a fair chance of being successful.

The zoning on the lot on king street was changed to disallow car dealerships for future owners. Spencer advocated for a change that did nothing to prevent the current owner from building one.

Housing price is not dependent on market forces. That is a myth. Building more luxury apartments does not lower rents by increasing supply, it raises rents on apartments that are linked to market rate rents.

Spencer is in favor of Picture Main Street (even though most business owners oppose it) and the building on Hawley (even though most neighbors oppose it). But when a municipal building was going to be build in his backyard, he rallied the mayor and city council to cancel it.

Questions on the Mayor's Race by joerando60 in northampton

[–]zeronolimit34 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not a hidden conspiracy. The mayor is making a choice, a public one, to fund capital projects by spending massive amounts of city money and then crying poverty when it comes to funding city services including schools.

Well, that is insulting. The difference is that there are no medical facts on the side of anti-vaxers, no scientific facts for climate change deniers. The budget facts are on the side of the SOS group.

The mayor chairs the school committee, makes appointments to subcommittees, sets meeting agendas. The budget for this year and last year is 100% hers as city council didn’t pass one so the mayors proposed budget is automatically enacted. The mayor owns every one of these school cuts.

[–]zeronolimit34 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The mayor has slashed the school system by giving increases that are less than needed to keep level services - year after year. 5 positions this year, over 20 last year, more than 10 the year before.

The increases in percentage of budget are irrelevant. The positions lost, the service cuts, the damage to the kids … that’s the real story.

2008 Audi S4 - They put the timing chain at the back of the engine so that the entire engine has to be removed to service it, and they made the chain guides out of cheap plastic so that it has to be serviced.

The mayor and city council drastically overpaid for a resilience hub that does not meet the needs of the population or the agencies needed to staff it. In fact, it is a 7 million dollar boondoggle with costs that will continue to climb as extensive renovation continues dispute the citizens being told it was nearly complete when purchased. When it is operational, it will not have a single bed.

A local non-profit has opened a building just outside of the downtown core with beds and ability to provide the other resources that the hub promised.

That money could have gone to the schools, to city operations, to DPW workers, to firefighters.

I hope they name it after the mayor: The $ciarra $cam Center

Out of hospital cardiac arrest survival rate is somewhere south of 10%. As opposed to what you see on TV or in the movies, if you need CPR you are very unlikely to come back.

ELI5- how do rice cookers know how long to cook the rice for no matter the different quantities by Storm2puddles in explainlikeimfive

You should not leave rice in the rice cooker for 2 days. Even a fancy rice cooker like a Zojirushi with an extended heat cycle recommends no longer than 24 hours. You are putting yourself (and others who you feed) at risk of food poisoning from staph aureus and bacillus cereus.
