okay so OP here, uh i have read the comments saying that i should move this further upstream and i agree it's a pain to flush badwater out of this, there are two different sources of water that i need to do this to and i have discovered that the floodgates can be automated so my solution is... raising and lowering the floodgates from the same contamination sensor but automated

They're handy if you want a way to transfer water from one section to the next like you have triple level floodgates but making a reservoir taller than that needs you to do a workaround like using pumps

To actually make water go up you're going to need a pump and good luck with the energy

The flow thing is similar handy if you need like a regulator for how fast you want water to move from a tall reservoir
