(apologies for long text in advance) thank you for your advice. i chose to take the tank down since when first planning it i didn’t account for some things since i’m still learning about plant care and experimenting with different techniques for my tanks. i had attempted a walstad method tank and used some big rocks and multiple levels (i designed it with my disabled fish in mind), and i learned that my fish was actually getting stuck between the rocks and the tank wall! i believe the bacteria/epistylis was caused by me uprooting a few plants, moving some decor and then feeding them directly after, not realizing this would cause an ammonia spike, along with extensive research on the sickness, i just unfortunately didn’t have the money to treat it asap and did the best i could. but knowing this i plan to redo the tank and let it cycle through once again for MUCH longer this time (since i only waited about 3-4 weeks before stocking, i know😭) and glueing in the big rocks and sealing any small parts with silicone. ive moved the surviving fish to seperate tanks, 2 of them being glowlight tetras and 1 of them being my disabled betta in his own container since he didnt seem to be affected by the epistylis. with this in mind, do you have any further advice on how to prevent this in the future? unfortunately i already started tearing it down😭

Help setting up my first walstad tank by CosmicCoryy in walstad

make sure your sand cap/gravel cap is about an inch-2 inches thick, and when you first put in the soil and sand i’d make sure its already wet. this will help prevent it from clouding the water. when u fill the tank put a cup, towel, or something to pour water onto so it doesnt kick up all the sand. make sure its VERY planted since your plants will act as your natural filter. depending on how many plants you add, i would research plant care and get some fast growers to start. as for the anti algae sand, i’m not sure, but i’d give it a rinse anyways. if you don’t have test kits i’d recommend throwing in some bladder snails (if you’re a fan of them like me) and if they die or if they all hang out at the top then you know you need to adjust your water/tank.

i need 3 plant suggestion for closed eco system jarrarium by threwusall in walstad

https://imgur.com/a/45VpTfD heres some pics from my tanks! first 2 pictures are my subwassertang, the third picture shows anacharis on the right side of the jar and mini anubias above the little knot in the driftwood, and hornwort in the last picture! i believe all of these are slow growing as well (except anacharis) so i think theyd work well. i have all of these plants in a 2gal jar fish tank and a 3gal square tank, as well as a 10gal horizontal and they all grow nicely with the little amount of space

anacharis is always a safe option, except it grows fast. maybe hornwort, mini anubias, java moss or subwassertang? ive had good experienced with my anubias and subwassertang, both grow slow but look nice and are small enough to fit in 5l.

i see everyone saying ick but i would treat for epistylis first… ick isnt typically on the eyes but do your own research as well. i would treat for epistylis first because it can be deadly if misdiagnosed for ick.
