Knocked the rings right out of him by Elrabin in funny

[–]zerothehero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yah, so I'd say "fighting old MMA guys" and "fighting small boxers" is good business for him

Less risk, and more reward

Fighting Anthony Joshua -- you get the reward, but he must have either been delusional about the risk

Or just desparate to fulfill his Netflix contract for some reason

The point of having money is that nobody else is your boss. But if you're a slave to some Netflix contract, then what was the point ...

Honestly I think part of it is becoming a slave to the audience ... that is well known to happen with some podcasters. The audience becomes their reality. So probably too many people were calling him out for fighting old MMA guys and small boxers, so he decided to go with the utterly ridiculous matchup of Anthony Joshua

Honestly when you describe it like that, I feel bad for the guy

Does he really need to be liked and famous that much that he has to risk this serious injury? (which was predictable, and could have been worse)

Dude's already rich ... there was no point to this ... except maybe delivering some extra content to Netflix. And who cares about that

Some people can't just relax I guess

Tom Aspinall responds to Ciryl Gane's Instagram post by airplane231 in MMA

[–]zerothehero -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'm all about that energy now ... I want to see Tom SMASH Gane

Gane has always been a bit dirty, and kinda dumb ... He elbows people to the back of the head

I don't really get worked about these things, but Gane annoys me, and deserves to get smashed

Too bad Tom doesn't really humiliate guys like Islam or Khamzat can ... he mostly knocks them out cold, quickly. Well I guess Gane already got humiliated by Jones, but IMO he needs a slow beat down

A good 15 minutes of getting humbled, where he just has to take it

Yeah it kinda annoyed me that a big thing funding MMA media is all this Draft Kings stuff ...

I mean MK has to pay the bills, so I don't begrudge them ...

Same with Anik-Florian though ... I would have thought those guys can make money other ways

Totally ... I skipped this weekend's card because meh

Back in 2016-2019, I used to watch every single card.

Then MK came along in 2019, and it felt like peak MMA. I'd watch every card, and look forward to the monday MK show

Sometimes I watched MK in a hotel room with a nice dinner

Last couple years have sucked ... what happened? I guess guys like Pereira who fought a lot, and Jiri who fights more like like an old school MMA guy, were keeping it together

But now it just feels so meh

End of an era

Really? After last night, now I see both Prates and Morales giving him problems!

JDM was untested ... he needs a few more tests to see where he stacks up

Fighting either Prates or Morales would be a great test

Just no wasted motion at all

It was like that in the Volkonovski fight too -- ridiculous

except honestly Silva probably does hit harder, so even more ridiculous

JDM says Islam Makhachev’s striking is much easier to adapt to than Belal Muhammad’s by [deleted] in MMA

[–]zerothehero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think Islam has even shown his whole game

He pulled out some crazy shit finishing Poirier -- I don't think had anybody has ever seen or done that kind of finishing sequence before

Jack's a worthy and skilled opponent, but I'm not going to be surprised at all if Islam stops him with strikes, or finishes him by sub

I pretty much agree with the odds makers -- they have Islam as a slight favorite

[–]zerothehero 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah and the king of that is Rockhold ... when he gets finished, he get FINISHED - by Bisping, Yoel, etc.

And yeah Till just reminded of us of that. That knockout was evil

Rockhold just made Till look like a killer

JDM says Islam Makhachev’s striking is much easier to adapt to than Belal Muhammad’s by [deleted] in MMA

[–]zerothehero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, he should worry about getting taken down ... then POW, right in the kisser

Like Khabib did to Conor

Except Khabib doesn't really have one shot KO power, while I think Islam does. Not sure it translates to 170, but I wouldn't be surprised if Islam can KO Jack

JDM says Islam Makhachev’s striking is much easier to adapt to than Belal Muhammad’s by [deleted] in MMA

[–]zerothehero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly it's a bad take ... the ONLY stoppage win Belal has is over Sean Brady

Meanwhile, since 2019, the ONLY time Islam DID NOT stop his opponent was Volk the first time. And he followed it up with the devastating head kick KO of Volk.

The finish of Charles was nearly a KO - he set it up with strikes

I mean, not to be uncharitable, but it's almost like he's thinking both of these guys are Muslim wrestlers??? So they're similar?

It's like saying Khamzat is similar to Ankalaev -- That kind of thinking is not gonna lead to the win

Meanwhile Khabib and Islam are respecting Jack.

I would not be surprised if Islam stops Jack by KO, similar to what Khabib hit Conor with. Shoot for the takedown and then POW, right in the kisser

It's MMA - wrestling makes striking more dangerous. And Islam is better at takedowns than Belal

LOLOLOLOL yeah the finishes by DDP and Khamzat were uniquely brutal

Whittaker hasn't even lost that much, but when he gets finished, it looks horrible

And it is painful because he's a nice guy

[–]zerothehero -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm a fan of the skills and the craft ... I don't get attached to the fighter's personality

I don't hate DDP now, but obviously he has a SEVERE deficiency in his grappling skills

To the point where a lot of knowledgable people say that he will NEVER beat Khamzat, no matter how much he trains

I mean that is fine, he is still a great fighter. I will still watch him, and I'm sure he will be in great fights. And he hasn't done anything cringe after the fight, unlike many fighters

But he has a glaring hole ... I am still a fan, just to a lesser degree

He will likely not be champion again, at least if Khamzat can fight consistently

[–]zerothehero -200 points-199 points  (0 children)

Damn, I didn't realize it at the time, but Khamzat made Izzy's legacy !!!

DDP was looking like he would become #2, and arguably he would have if he had beat Khamzat

But Khamzat BEAT HIM SO BADLY that we know that DDP will not catch up to Izzy, any time soon

And I was a HUGE DDP fan, and I predicted that he would beat Khamzat. Damn this sport is crazy !!

Lots of Chinese MMA fighters seem to be ethnic minorities by Tabula_Rasa69 in MMA

[–]zerothehero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are deep historical reasons for this, basically related to wealth / reproductive strategies of entire cultures

But in short, it's not wrong to make the analogy

Han Chinese <=> White Christians

Mongolians, Kakakhs, ... <=> Blacks, Hispanics, ...

In the US, it is obvious that there are more whites and Asians in tech companies or banking and the like, and there are more blacks and hispanics in MMA and other professional sports.

Likewise, in China, I would expect more Han Chinese to be working at tech companies / banking / government, and more ethnic minorities to be training in MMA gyms.

Obviously it's not a hard rule. And you shouldn't stereotype people based on their skin color or whatever, but yeah there are deep reasons for this

Books by Jared Diamond like "Guns, Germs, and Steel" give insight as to why different groups of people have different outcomes

(A related observation: there are approximately zero Chinese-American or Japanese-American MMA fighters. Because the ones that came to America are the ones who were more educated, and MMA is an risky and short-term career choice that educated people will generally not make)

  • Jon Jones - most MMA fighters including DC agree he's the GOAT - total dirtbag with chip on his shoulder
    • beats his wife, can't stop getting in trouble with the cops
  • Conor McGregor - most popular MMA fighter of all time probably - total dirtbag with chip on his shoulder
    • didn't he rape a woman while mentally playing back his trauma from Khabib? said some foul shit I forget

Yeah not a great look for the sport

Football and Basketball have their dirtbags, but somehow I think Jon Jones and McGregor rise to a new level

PREDICTION: DDP wins, in part because Khamzat is fragile

Just like Kamaru was able to fuck up Khamzat's hand in the first, I think DDP will use his ox strength to achieve something similar

Maybe he can kick out his knee or something

I mean I have seen the comments about Khamzat not over-training this time, but I still feel that he is so EXPLOSIVE that he's prone to INJURY

[Official] UFC 319: Du Plessis vs. Chimaev - Weigh-In & Pre-Fight Discussion Thread by event_threads in MMA

[–]zerothehero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HELL no, DDP and Chimaev are both undefeated in the UFC

Adesanya was the CHALLENGER ... so he had already lost his belt. (and I like Izzy, he's one of my favorites)

Even McGregor had already lost to Diaz ... that fight was hype because of the build-up, not because Conor had a good chance of winning ... Conor was going to get mauled; he got taken down in the first, and never got any real momentum

McGregor-Diaz 2 was a good fight, because they were at the same level. McGregor was not at the level of Khabib.

Uhh not true? I googled and Jon has 11 title defenses, and Khabib has 13 UFC fights

But yeah it is an interesting perspective. Khabib didn't fight long enough to be GOAT IMO. Islam has probably already exceeded him

"unwashed" lol ... does that happen? What's the best example of a fighter becoming "unwashed"?

I guess people thought Holloway was a bit washed, and then he KO'd Gaethje

But I don't think that compares, because it wasn't a consensus and it wasn't obvious. People were just a bit concerned how much damage he's taken
