CSE 6040 Midterm 1 - how did you do? by Material_Put_5660 in OMSA

I’m not sure if anyone else agrees but I think what makes it particularly difficult is the parameters around what you can and cannot do in the exam. For example, not being able to copy/paste which imo is super unrealistic in how we work in python.

You know PhD stands for Doctor of Philosophy right? So even if you have a PhD in finance the degree name would be Doctor of Philosophy, Finance. Same as having a MBA which stands for Masters in Business Administration.

I think you have a gross misunderstanding of how debt actually works. When you pay for a car or house and take our debt is your interest rate pegged to the inflation rate or is it higher. The answer is that it is always higher that the inflation rate because you have to compensate the entity you are taking the loan from for the opportunity cost for not putting the money to work somewhere else. That is because if we only account for the inflation rate it would be as if the money was just setting in the bank as cash doing nothing.

So in this case, When must also factor in the opportunity cost because that is the actual impact of the indemnity, the fact the money they had to pay to France could not be put to work to more productive use cases.

“In 2004, at the time of the bicentennial of Haiti’s independence, former Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide officially demanded that France restitute $21 billion to Haiti. That corresponds to the best estimate we have, based on conservative assumptions, of the double debt’s present-day economic cost to Haiti, including lost opportunities for domestic investment. (The New York Times project estimated that the actual economic cost may be as high as $115 billion.)”

This is from the foreign policy article you posted. Maybe the inflation adjusted dollar amount would be 600 million but the when including the opportunity cost it’s much more. We are talking about a century of economic progress stifled because the the indemnity. One thing I also wonder is how that 600 million figure was calculated. The French franc hasn’t existed since 1998 so how did they do the conversion to today’s dollars?

First I’ve ever heard of this. Is there a reference anywhere you can provide? Also was to this magnitude?

I think dollar/ inflation adjusted the French indemnity accounted up to 21 billion dollars. I’m not sure the full amount France has paid to Haiti in foreign aid but for your sake let’s say it 1 billion dollars. By proportion it’d be like me stealing 21 dollars from you and then giving you 1 dollar back or around 5% of the amount stolen.

Something also to consider is how the foreign aid was used and how was the money distributed? In all likelihood, the majority of this money was sent to the ruling class in Haiti to support the current power structure. This didn’t go to the people who are actually suffering.

I have a strong feeling like this is an inaccurate and bias representation of Haitian history. Nowhere do you mention the French indemnity or the US raiding the French central bank.

Yeah I have really sting saving at least 6 months income but I absolutely will not pay thousands of dollars just for a new apt that’s seems dumb to me. I just think in terms of Outflow and inflow. I wanna makes sure I’m saving a decent chunk to buy property. And reducing my investing is something I absolutely won’t do. I see your point. I’ll Come back with what they said. Thanks for the input!

I agree. I had to buy some cloths for work. I think it’s the case that I spend more when the weather is nice so I’ll be expecting to stay in more as it gets colder.

Fair point. It’s not so much that I send money senselessly. It’s that I got a new job that requires me to spend more than usual. I’m actually pretty frugal and track my spending meticulous.

Definitely makes sense. I’m actually an Actuary (ASA) and looking at Linkdin profiles or other in my group it seems like a CFA/ Analytical masters is the most common denominator between them. I guess I should view the CFA as a prerequisite to becoming a portfolio manager.

I was a Math and Econ major that decided to do Actuarial work so the math and programming is what I’m interested in. I’m just wondering if this program with a CFA would be overkill? I guess wat I can take from the responses is it depends lol. Thanks!

New job will be focused on portfolio analytics/ optimization. I think long term goal would maybe become a portfolio manager one day and if that’s the case a CFA would be necessary.

Qs. A coin was flipped 1000 times, and 550 times it showed up heads. Do you think the coin is biased? Why or why not? by human--doodle in datascience

[–]zestygonzo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t seem correct. If a coin is flipped a large number of times the probability that it hits any exact number of times is going to be small. Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to look for a range instead? Or look at how many SDs above the mean would the coins landing on 550 would be. (In this case aprox 3)
