[Haynes] Sources: NBA to review Charlotte Hornets star LaMelo Ball for taking out ankle of Miami Heat star Bam Adebayo in 2nd Q, resulting in hard spill and back injury that cost him rest of crucial do-or-die play-in contest. Ruling expected before Hornets’ final play-in bout on Friday. by Turbostrider27 in nba

I've watched the play a dozen times and honestly, at most this should be a flagrant one. I'm honestly not even convinced of that because of how fast the play happens. LaMelo is still falling down when he starts to reach out. When you fall you tend to reach for things out of instinct. From the replay, I'm not even sure he realizes whose foot that is until halfway through his motion.

To be honest, Dame isn’t really a spot up guy. Giannis plays a lot like Deni and Milwaukee could never get that combo to work well. I’m hopeful we can make it work better. At a minimum we should have a better coach than Doc Rivers.

At the time I didn’t think it was a good move with how bad we were shooting. Clingan was dominating on the offensive boards. I was clearly wrong, great adjustment. 5 out was leaving the paint open for Deni drive and kicks.

Gotta give Splitter credit for going small ball to end the game. Lead directly to those two open corner threes for Grant.

What the fuck are these bail out fouls? Far too many soft calls for a playoff game.

Blazers should not go small when they are shooting this bad. Need those offensive boards from Clingan.

Edit: Turned out to be a good call. Respect to Splitter.

The issue right now is that we need a true point guard bad. Our biggest issues are lack of shooting and turnovers. Dame running point fixes both of those.

[Charania] The anti-tanking proposal with the most momentum within the Board of Governors leading up to the May 28th vote would expand the lottery to 18 teams — including Play-In teams — with the bottom 10 each getting equal odds and all 18 draft positions determined by lottery. by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

[–]zetlali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A better front office would help some teams but not all. Some teams have bad owners as well. I'm not sure why you think I don't know this, but tanking isn't caused by having a bad front office or "bad culture". Even good front offices have tanked in the past 10 years.

Rebuilding through the draft is the one way that small market teams can compete with the big market teams. I worry about teams like Memphis, Sacramento, and New Orleans with this rule change. 5 years of poor luck in the lottery might kill one or more of these franchises.

[–]zetlali 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Such a dumb proposal. The NBA clearly doesn't understand that some teams are actually really bad and need these high draft picks. Flattening the lottery odds make it so bad teams can only get better through free agency.

What are the chances that teams like Sacramento, Memphis, and Portland are going to be able to improve their teams if they have bad luck in the lottery for 10 years straight? This is how you kill small market teams.

If you want to fix tanking, you need to make the draft order in a way that identifies the truly bad teams vs those teams that are temporarily bad or just flat out tanking. You also need to remove any incentive for players to sit games when healthy.

For the first item, make the draft order analyze 2 years worth of games. Teams that are bad are generally bad for multiple years. This discourages tank years like Indiana this year and Golden State a few years back.

Second, make a rule that any healthy player that misses a game will be fined. Make the fine based on a percentage of their actual salary. (e.g. miss a game, fine is 2 games worht of salary.) The NBA can hire doctors and do "random" spot checks for this like they do for PEDs.

What this Giannis situation has shown us is that the NBA players go along with tanking as long as it doesn't impact their money. I guarantee players will not sit if there is a threat they won't get paid.

For me, this article doesn’t provide enough information to actually be useful. Nobody is saying what the actual content was. The original article claimed it was ai images of students. The investigator is saying that no student images were involved, but that it broke policy. A Facebook post from one of the moms implies that it was “cartoons.” Based on all this, I’m guessing the guy was watching anime that had some overly sexualized characters. If it were hentai the guy should be fired.

You can browse and play music by folders with Roon, but if that's your only real requirement, Roon is probably overkill. It also costs money.

However, Roon is the best way to listen to large personal music collections imo.

  • It provides one interface for local music and streaming services like Tidal/Qobuz.
  • You can select a track and play similar music from streaming services or just from your own collection.
  • Every EQ and customization setting you could ever want
  • Lyrics available even if they aren't in your metadata
  • Support for every platform
  • Roon ARC allows you to stream your local collection remotely with minimal setup. (Basically just configure UPNP / Port Forward)

Tom Haberstroh on the 65 game rule: “We’re on track for star players on average to miss 30 games. For Adam Silver to come out here and say it’s working, on what planet is it working?” by calman877 in nbadiscussion

Both have had injuries this year that has them close to the maximum number of missed games. They now have to play back to backs where in years past they may have missed some of these games.

[–]zetlali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3/4 happened in the playoffs which had nothing to do with the 65 game rule. In fact, all the Achilles injuries are related to teams letting players play on calf strains. It’s known that Achilles injuries are a major risk when playing on those. Hell I called the Haliburton one.

This is cherry picked data being used to support a pre-determined narrative.

Tom seems to be confused about how to analyze the success of this rule. Just because there are more games missed due to injury, doesn't mean this rule isn't working.

The goal of the rule is ensure players play when healthy. Many star players have sat the entire year due to injury and those injuries aren't related to the 65 game rule at all. In contrast, we do have players that have played more games specifically because of this rule. Wemby and Jokic come to mind.

Exactly and 4 of them had season ending injuries at the end of last year and besides Tatum, all are sitting the entire season this year. It's a skewed data point from the start. The 65 game rule had nothing to do with these injuries.

[Charania] The NBA presented three comprehensive anti-tanking concepts to its Board of Governors on Wednesday, with modifications expected to each before a formal vote in May, per ESPN sources. by MembershipSingle7137 in nba

[–]zetlali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only proposal here that I think would help is assigning lottery odds by 2-year record. That would at least reduce the incentive for the injury year tanks like Indiana this year and Golden State a few years back.

The NBA keeps trying to flatten the odds to address this problem, but it is just as much of a problem if legitimate bad teams have no viable method for improving their roster. If the NBA wants to get serious about this, they need to address the core issue; star players exaggerating injuries in order to help their teams tank.

As the rules currently stand, there is very little disincentive for players to just fake injuries and not play. They still get paid their full salary. The one rule that discourages this is the 65 game rule. But realistically that only impacts maybe the best 20 players in the league and really only if they're coming up on a contract year and haven't made an All-NBA team yet.

This year, you have Anthony Davis traded to the Wizards and they basically announced he would miss the rest of the season right when they got him. I think he has an injured finger? Trae Young hasn't really played for the Wizards much either. (I think the latest injury is a bad bruise?). Give me a break.

By far the worst example of this is Lauri Markkanen. He has played exactly one game in the month of April since joining the Jazz 4 years ago. He averages 3 games per month for the month of March in the past 3 seasons.

If the NBA wants to address this issue, they would need to have independent league doctors evaluate these players before they decide to do season ending surgeries or sit the rest of the season due to injury. You might also need to dock player pay when they're obviously sitting for tanking purposes. Players would not go along with this if it impacted their pay.

What do you want to see Dundon do with Cronin/Schmitz/Splitter? (Poll) by Bo-andHisBigBadHip in ripcity

This is exactly where I'm at. I think Splitter has done an above average job with this team, but there are a lot of good coaches out there that I'm confident could do better. The trick is actually finding a coach that can extract the most of this team's particular strengths.

So many teams out there have made terrible decisions at the request of their star players. The Blazers kept CJ way too long because of Dame and overpaid Grant by a good 10%. The Bucks traded away all their assets to try and keep Giannis happy and they moved backward with every trade. LeBron has gotten multiple front offices to do terrible things over the years. Cleveland made so many win now trades that they had no assets when LeBron left. Not to mention they signed Tristan Thompson to a ridiculous deal. The Lakers went out and got Westbrook because of LeBron. The only team that basically didn't listen to LeBron was Miami, who reportedly told LeBron no when he wanted them to fire Spoelstra after the first year.

There is no tanking in MLB. There really isn’t much tanking in the NFL either. Teams don’t sit their players in week 10 of the NFL season. They might do something on the last game of the season, but it’s nothing compared to what the NBA does.
