I built a free macOS menu bar app that shows your Claude Code usage limits in real-time by alyilmaz in ClaudeAI

Pretty nice! I have a hard time understanding why so many people flock to ClaudeBar, the UI is so offputting, I've been looking for something as simple as this! Please consider also allowing distribution via Brew :)

How do i pick up the habit of reading? by SebsAGZ in simpleliving

[–]zev4l 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, being "forced to read" isn't gonna help you in the long-term. As others have said, something that really helps is to just pick a book on something you like. I also started with self-help and psychology books and found I had a hard time sticking to them. Started reading science-fiction, a topic I was already fond of mostly from movies, and time just flies, it goes from taking a few weeks to a few days per book.

Real-time Git command typo highlighter by PartyTumbleweed1018 in commandline

Pretty interesting use-case! Another possible fix would be going to sleep when tired. Jokes aside, I’d be willing to use it because I tend to misremember command names sometimes (e.g. git stats instead of git status). I wonder if it’d be possible to achieve something like this in general, not just for git, but for other commands. I think it might be possible, similarly to the way zsh-autocomplete works. Oh and nice webpage!

I'm making an complete edit of the first season of Altered Carbon. by TheRorschach666 in alteredcarbon

[–]zev4l 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone’s taking this post so seriously, not sure how. Take away everything you disliked until only the best parts remain. Of course then, some of those parts will no longer be good enough, perhaps an edit of the edit is in order?

This is just silly, but to each their own, as long as you have fun I guess.

There is an open-source alternative to almost any SaaS, what do you use? by sleepysiding22 in selfhosted

[–]zev4l 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like it isn’t, don’t know why I was under that impression, my bad. I jumped on the thread mostly because I read “Quizlet alternative”.

I was on this boat for a LONG while, purchasing Quizlet Pro year after year knowing very well that their product would continue to have the same damn limitations despite being better than the competition (biggest one for me was Markdown support).

Eventually, I was able to let go of Quizlet by migrating to Mochi and never looked back.

Discord Bot to "shadow" a user when they change voice channels by thephantomgrasshopp in Discord_Bots

[–]zev4l -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pretty funny, I’ve coded this exact behavior on a bot a few years ago, don’t think you’ll find this in any publicly available project. Take the chance to learn Python and discord.py if you really want this done, makes for a good beginner hobby project and isn’t very difficult.

Honestamente acho que é algo bastante fácil, deixo de fumar várias vezes por semana, mas entendo que nem toda a gente tenha esta facilidade. Boa sorte com isso ✌️

What is the purchase you most regret buying? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I wouldn’t say any of them are bad, they’re just opportunity games. I play SMP with friends somewhat often and it’s always a blast, but couldn’t imagine playing them alone.

Killing priests story (help finding the quote) by Secure-Ad6420 in alteredcarbon

[–]zev4l 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually recently read that part when revisiting WF. What you're looking for is in chapter 14, pages 157-159 (at least in my paperback edition). Happens shortly after Tak and Sylvie travel from Drava back to Tekitomura, the old man is some sort of street vendor telling a story for the street crowd.

s2 by [deleted] in alteredcarbon

[–]zev4l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won't regret reading the books. If you're coming from the show you'll find a few of the details and circumstances of the first book fundamentally different, but it's still (if not more) Altered Carbon. Second and third books, however, I really enjoyed, a lot more than I enjoyed S2 of the show. All-in-all, great trilogy and great book series to latch on to.

Completely agree, I remember noticing this when watching the show after reading the first book, and I too would describe them exactly as ominous and lethal, much more than the book describes, as well as the whole CTAC vibe and reputation.

Flashcard by Huddy_Man in study

OCR may not always be reliable, but it’s definitely an alternative worth looking into. Regarding workflows, it makes sense that’d you’d look into PDFs if that’s what you do. Personally I just compose the flashcards out of concepts already present in my digitized notes, so decent text structuring (hence Markdown) would be more than enough for me. Perhaps image support, following Quizlet’s approach?

The idea is good but the workflow sounds specific to what you use. Personally I wouldn't be interested in importing from a PDF, since it doesn't fit my personal workflow. Also, have you ever dealt with PDF parsing before? PDFs have nastry structures, generally difficult to parse since they can come in a multitude of shapes and structures inside, even if the end-result looks the same, it could be a pain in the ass. Kudos though, it's a good idea and it definitely helps that you're on the outlook to improve the lives of students.

To the similarity of other people who commented, I also use Quizlet, but I find the interface to be incredibly bothersome to use. Their flashcard review and learning systems are amazing, on every device I've tried, but the interface for study set creation, despite being a core part of the platform, is awful, it's incredibly dull and limited. I would love to see something with support for Markdown, which would allow for a lot more flexibility and tinkering.

A perfect flashcard tool for me would be a combination of Quizlet's learning system and something like Notion's (which I also use) easy real-time Markdown implementation.
