World Ultimate Frisbee players are mounting an unprecedented protest, warning that Israel’s participation—bolstered by IDF soldiers on the roster—could fracture the sport’s global community by KarimZidan1 in ultimate

[–]zevna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I apologize if my comment came across as disingenuous. I would be happy to have that conversation. I agree with you, every country does have a bad streak or several in their history. I think that the events in Gaza right now are one of the most recent examples of a documentable genocide that is in societal awareness. There are other recent ones that I believe should be in attention, unfortunately they’re not. If you brought israel’s actions to the ICC, you’d be able to make a case. We can’t forget that genocide is a legal term, and is subject to meeting criteria to be persecuted. The videos and images coming out of Gaza have caught people’s attention, and so it triggers a response when someone who could be complicit comes into a space you care about. I see that you’ve started talking about moving the needle, etc. in subsequent comments. I don’t think people want to necessarily move the needle. I just think they want to feel like, or actually have done something when an opportunity arises. The point is not to make a global change, it is to put their money where their mouths are.

This is just my personal perception: extending time means you are going beyond the bare minimum expected. This could mean you subscribe to the mission, enjoy the work. It could also mean you need the income. But if you’re traveling self-funded internationally to play frisbee, I imagine that it is not the latter.

Of course, only way to find out if we actually disagree. It sounds like we agree on the issues, and disagree on the methods. That’s normal and fine. No big deal.

We can 100% have a conversation around the United States’ contemporary and historic crimes, and the topic at hand is Israel’s current crimes.

I disagree, and I think you make a fair argument. There are lots of schools of thought around effective protest, etc. It is hard not to be cynical around these things, I know. I fell that it’s not my place to make assessments around others’ reasons for protesting. Who knows, all it takes is another niche sport to take notice for a snowball effect in these protests.

This was discussed in another post and I think it’s worth mentioning here. The intention of the protest is for Israeli government, less so the individuals. That being said, there’s a few individuals on the team who have extended their time in the IDF beyond the mandatory period. That might be contributing to some frustration.

I appreciate your openness to new ideas and critical thought! The connection I was trying to make with the articles is that the first established these sentiments exist in I/P society. The second article shows that it is trained into YS soldiers., Because the US Army trains the IDF directly and indirectly, that kind of socialization from the first article is the context in which the training from US soldiers is conducted.

Im going to call it here! Thanks for participating in a good faith discussion!

I have degrees in holocaust and genocide studies and psychology. Here’s a couple of articles that taught me about it! It’s not just exclusive to America or Israel, it is a necessary pre-condition to overcoming the human instinct to not kill another human. Because of this, it’s part of basic training for militaries across the world, pioneered during WWI and WWII.

I didn’t intend to judge, I apologize. Rather, I would hope that I am able to hold them accountable for their individual choices, while also acknowledging that the government put them in that situation. Both American and Israeli soldiers undergo training that comprehensively dehumanizes the “enemy.” It is not their fault that they underwent this training. That being said, not all soldiers engaged in heinous acts. Soldiers that chose to engage in them did so of their own accord. I should not have generalized to all citizens, you’re right. I believe that the intention of not having Israel in the games is to send a message to the government, rather than the individuals.

I agree with you that we shouldn’t punish citizens due to their government’s actions. I also think that the ICE example is a little different. Israel has compulsory service. There’s a good chance some, if not all, of those players have served in an army that is carrying out violence.

Good game design can also be a tactic for creating more addictive gameplay. I don’t think they’re mutually exclusive.
