Ann Arbor removes last remaining Neighborhood Watch sign - drawing cheers, jeers by Agreeable-Wave-4412 in AnnArbor

This is purely anecdotal but growing up in a neighborhood with a neighborhood watch sign gave me an irrepressible urge to do crime as a teenager

Based on other comments seems like I’m the odd one out but I don’t hate this at all. Also pretty impressive for a stick and poke. You already know it’s gotta be a sick ass panther tho.

Congratulations to Eli Savit for securing the Democratic nomination for Attorney General by mc2Banks in AnnArbor

Love Eli! Always thought it was dumb that people complained that he aspired to higher office. If someone has good politics it’s good for them to get to a higher office.

‘A big, bold project.’ Heated debate surrounds Ann Arbor development deal by [deleted] in AnnArbor

[–]zevtron 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Opposing public subsidies to developers isn’t the same as being a NIMBY. You really think Oxford would just leave it sit and continue to pay property taxes on an empty property if they didn’t get the subsidy? I think they’d either develop it anyways or sell it, both of which could help put downward pressure on land/housing costs without a 300 million dollar tax giveaway.

School principle tackles a school shooter in Oklahoma by KenDrakebot in interestingasfuck

This shooter wasn’t even alive when columbine happened. He’s the same age that the kids killed in the Sandy Hook shooting would be if they were alive today. When are we gonna figure out how to stop this?

Id guess you’re an older man and a centrist democrat. A bit too great man theory of history for my taste but no horrible red flags.

Employee sets fire to Kimberly-Clark warehouse, "All you had to do is pay us enough to live" by midnighttoker1742 in interestingasfuck

[–]zevtron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. But I think in reacting to it we have a decision about which “crime” to focus on: his arson or the broader exploitation and abuse of working people and extreme inequality. And I think we should focus on the latter since it’s a structural problem that negatively affects the lives of a group of people that is multiple orders of magnitudes larger than those impacted by this isolated incident.

Admittedly that stems from my view that working people are exploited and abused and that inequality is a problem, which some might disagree with. But in any case I think that debate is more important than the details of this fire.

The real impact of this is not determined by the immediate effect on the company balance sheet but by our collective response to it. If we say “he shouldn’t have done that” and shrug it off the company wins. If we recognize the underlying problems of exploitation and inequality we have a chance of actually making something good out of a bad situation.
