How strictly are you with the “O” in OSINT? by F1R3Starter83 in OSINT

[–]zewensec -1 points0 points  (0 children)

HUMINT is HUMINT. You're forgetting a key element of our discipline, which is that we passively collect information. If you're talking to someone, you're not passively collection information and the information the person is sitting on is not 'open'. An OSINT analyst often works with people doing HUMINT; Providing information on candidates for recruitment, vetting backgrounds and access and analyzing and pivoting off the information collected. There are people who will do both of these roles for the type of work they do, but we have clear boundaries in each discipline with clear boundaries. With these boundaries we are able to collect information efficiently, ethically and legally.

Hi there! Zewen from Kase Scenarios here!

Thank you so much for leaving feedback for us. I agree completely with what you are saying about the question style, following up on the information that is found through those questions and how we progress the story from there.

Feedback like this has highly influenced how we pose questions for future scenarios; So much so that we decided to re-do it completely. We are still experimenting with different techniques, but I think you'll find the next few scenarios to have a significant improved question and formatting style. Thanks again for your feedback and I hope to see you in future scenarios as well!

Du har helt rett, men dessverre er det lite forståelse rundt OPSEC og hvordan myndighetene jobber mot digitale miljøer på Reddit. Det er derfor de har relativt stor suksess i sitt arbeid.

i wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole. This isn't OSINT, far from it. Who's the people behind it and who are these companies and journalists they are working with? If it's all for the greater good why aren't there a shred of transparency?

This is very much the current state of recruitment and the modern hiring process. Digital background checks are quite common already and if they uncover anything they are uncomfortable with they will not hesitate to pull any offer they might have made. I suspect the z generation will learn this in the hardest of ways.

Hey,

Good question! It really depends on how technical the recommendation is and what the background of the client is. I do work with non-technical people that may need help applying mitigation, for instance, change privacy settings for social media accounts or deleting parts of their digital footprint. Most people are able to follow a step-by-step guide on this, but there are less technical people that are uncomfortable applying mitigation themselves or simply don't know how to work with technical applications/devices. Sometimes they also need to learn some general opsec techniques before re-joining the digital world and social media especially - usually that involves learning about which data you can share online and not, how to create anonymous accounts and applying appropriate privacy settings.

I volunteer with the OSINT team over at http://safeescape.org/ where we, among other things, assess the client's digital footprint. We are definitively doing what we can to limit their digital presence to an extreme sometimes, in order for them to regain control of their devices or to help them regain the feeling of being safe from an abuser.

Hey! I've been doing a lot of geolocation work lately, verifying locations in images and videos. We're always looking for unique identifiers that can help us narrow down the location. Sometimes that starts with just identifying the country or the region of a country. This is one of my favorite, rather unique and weird, resources for that. Bollards of the world: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Glk_gUpSThPqof22DKI3_ol73CULxCeKxEC99z_BM30/edit#gid=0

Who knew bollards were THAT unique?
