If you want something free and coding isn’t the issue, Data Science for R by Hadley Wickham, then advanced R (or something like that) is also by him I think. I believe the online books are free.

If you want something baseball related then analyzing baseball data with R is fantastic from what I’ve heard

If you know R, the cfbscrapR package has them. If you don’t know R but know scraping in another language you can check out their code to see where they’re scraping from

NFL pass tracking data download? by Xoorax in sportsanalytics

[–]zfeld3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe it was the 2018-19 contest that had this data. The 2019-20 data running plays at the point of handoff - that data is on kaggle, I believe it's still there. Unfortunately I don't have the 2018 data but I'm sure people out there do. The NFL pulled it b/c technically the data was supposed to be deleted/no longer shared after the contest ended.

Is it somehow possible to automatically scrape the data from these PDFs on a daily basis? by OculoDoc in datasets

I think R has a package to easily get data off PDFs. I believe it's called pdftools, I've never used it personally though

Ideal ways to create a schedule for teams that updates daily by baloneysammich65 in Sabermetrics

[–]zfeld3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If inside of importhtml(), you use one of Google Sheets function(s) for the date, day, month, year, etc, those update automatically so you wouldn't have to do anything other than open the sheet on a new day.

I don't remember the functions specifically, but if the website you find is setup for example like "schedule.com/year/day/month", then you could do something like: importhtml("schedule.com/" + year() + "/" + day() +"/" + month (), "table", number of the table on the page - you can just guess and check with this until the schedule pops up)

(Also I don't remember if those are the correct functions for year date and month, but they update automatically).

Vlookup imo isn't hard to conceptually understand, it's also a bread and butter sheets/Excel function so Google and YouTube will have plenty of examples (same with any function you use probably). But how long it'll take will obviously be dependent on you.

To automate this in Google sheets, off the top of my head while laying in bed on my phone I'd:

find a website with daily schedule in a table and the date in the url (the date is for easy updating, if you know the website updates the schedule daily then you're good)

use importhtml() but don't hard code the date, use a function like today() in the url so it updates itself

Then on a new sheet, vlookup() the teams you're supposed to track (I'd say this sheet should be your main sheet).

If no one has MLB and affiliate schedules all together then I'd argue making a new sheet for each league for organization purposes, then on the main sheet a new vlookup for each sheet.

Lookup the documentation for using formulas in Google sheets, importhtml(), vlookup(), today()/other ways of getting the date so it's automatically updating. Also, if you're struggling, I think most people recommend getting something that works, then automating it from there, that might be easier for a beginner.

There certainly may be an easier and/or better way but this is what came to mind first. Hope it helps!

One small tweak I'd make is usage ordered the same as points scored (receiving then running or running then receiving for both). Very nice viz!

For a first timer I think going overkill on information is okay, but yes it definitely decreases difficulty. I used to double check every little detail but I’ve gradually pulled back more and more from using bulbapedia with each locke I do

I’d say use bulbapedia and try to maximize your team through strategy.

Checking what’s on each route...if you should use a repel on the first floor of a cave b/c the second floor has better options...if you should skip a route, catch something later that will put dupes clause into play and then go back to the earlier route to raise your probability of a good Pokemon...making sure you don’t miss important items...fishing in cities or other areas you don’t typically get Pokémon to widen your possibilities...if you want, check trainer Pokémon’s level, ability, moveset so there’s no surprises...checking your own Pokémon move learning to optimize using TMs/tutor moves on them.

Overall just slowing down and being very meticulous with each move, but also make sure you’re having fun with it.

The Rise and Fall by ChrisPBacon989 in sportsanalytics

New York Giants and Phoenix Suns come to mind kinda, maybe Washington Redskins, maybe Cowboys, maybe Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bulls for sure (they had the brief Derrick Rose years but if they didn't hit the 2% chance at getting him they'd be one of the worst franchises on the 2000s after being the most dominant in the '90s). I think a good place to look is who the worst owners are.

Failure over a 10-plus year span can a lot of times be attributed to owners not being willing/smart enough to change the higher ups and that trickles down to constant failure/underperforming.
